    First of all, there is a difference between owning stock and being an active shareholder. I'd say the mindset prevailent among the latter of these to be a major problem. Secondly, why is it difficult to retire without being a shareholder? It ain't difficult over here atleast.

    OK I'll bite. I'm interested in your retirement story. Your IRA/401k/whatever retirement strategy doesn't and hasn't historically contained any US stock holdings? I've been looking at what to do for retirement myself and I'm very interested.

    Interestingly M$ just announced that they would be making an implementation of the newest Liberty Alliance spec as well. So I believe that you could buy SUN, Novell, M$, CA, SAP for your site and they will interoperate. This is a sort of admittance that Passport isn't being adopted by anyone besides M$ themselves...at least in my book. The question remains of how well the M$ product will play with others.

    like ppl (average reader here) are going to pay for a decent service when they can get a crap free one. Not to troll, but most people here use free stuff ( as in beer ) over comercial stuff even if the free stuff happens to be substantially sucky. I just don't see it. I do love my MythTv though.

    parent is a wonderful character assassination and normally i have a general distaste for RMS and the GNU posse' attitudes, but when it comes to choosing teams I have to admit that I am in favor of not having to cross corporate/political/government boundaries in order to reuse some code. label me a Stallman apologist or a reluctant GNUist, but the man has a point (depending on your goal I suppose).

    I thought men are pigs? I am confused as to what animal I am supposed to be. We are a little OT here, but I have long accepted myself as a "pig" I don't think I could switch to being a dog very easily. Although I must admit I don't know what it would entail...I do fear change though.

    Of course this may be a minority opinion here.
    OTOH I am very sad to legislation that limits the 'net and kills the wild west type tradition that reigned here in the mid 90's.

    I've noticed this as well. My hypothesis is that good exploits are an inverse function of IT employment numbers. There seems to be a better place to channel energy lately.

    Actually, You can join the military and get most of the benefits without the sucky "We own your life" bit by becoming a civilain employee of the department of Defense. I quit a pretty decent corporate job recently and took a job with the Air Force as a Civilain employee. I actually got a pay increase out of it (unbelievable, I know) I like the work I'm doing more now, I work 4 9's an 8 then 4 9's and off the second friday of every 2 week period. If I work anything over 80 hours in a pay period I am required to get extra pay. I get EVERY stinking federal holiday off, and I get decent benefits. It's not a bad gig if you can find a position that doesn't just suck the life out of you. There are some downsides as well, but the fact that my office furniture isn't as nice doesn't bother me.

    One of the EU observers commented that 6 hour queues to place a vote in any European country would result in protests in the streets the next day. But Americans treat it as business as usual.

    No kidding. I had to wait for 8 minutes, and was about ready to just go home. The voting process slants the vote toward the left because employed people don't have 6 hours to wait in line, and the unemployed are just used to waiting in that long line for thier gubment checks. I hate to say it like that and I guess I'll have to post this Anonymously, but that's how I see it from here

    This isn't a LETS-BE-FRIENDS-NOW type settlemenet. This money is blood drawn from M$. I think LaSala has just won the M$ most pesky people award. From what I understand this only settles a portion of the ongoing litigation Novell has had pending against M$.

    I use this all the time for dvds that I want to rip. I guess using cp just never occurred to me, but cat seems to work fine except of course the blocksize thing.

    if you didn't like 9.1 you won't like 9.2 at all. I had problems compiling mplayer right off the bat on 9.2 ( something wrong with prefetch.h in kernel source ) which i "fixed" , and then I couldn't get the power settings to play nice on my laptop. It seemed buggy so i went back to 9.1

    I figure every extra day my child goes un-conceived, the better off that child will be when the time comes. I'm hoping that I will be changed, as opposed to the much-more-difficult "I am going to change" pledge...

    probably not. just think about being 45 when your kids are 15. The younger you are the easier teenagers are I would assume. My oldest is 3 and I'm 28. so it'll be 40 and 15 for me....sometimes I really wonder if I'll be any fun at all at 40 or if i'll be a worse version of my parents. At any rate as soon as we started having kids I noticed that I became more responsible because i had to be , and i didn't think it sucked at the time. every once in a while i miss just being able to go spend a weekend away with the wife at with no preparation whatsoever... but overall I think i am a happier person with kids. They're surprisingly challenging and engaging as they get older.

    ummm Novell here.... you'll have to rewrite that in German please. Anyone that could even start to think about that is in Germany....unless you count the Ximian guys.... I guess they could get Gnome to do that for you, but then you could just run Gnome on any distrobution.

    Try Novell in the Ximian devision. That parent company also owns the SuSE Linux distro and tools now btw.


    umm i think the parent said that Miguel DOESN'T work for MS.
    At any rate I see the things that Miguel is trying to do as good things for the community. Commoditizing certain types of applications is the foundation of the gpl culture. Almost all successful gpl apps have been an Nth implementation of a defacto or real standard. beatiful things like mono, wine, or other API implementations are just further attempts to sing the same song. It is not a song we'll have to sing forever though. Already there have been a couple of really new and fresh ideas released as oss. Myabe someone will fill in my thinking with examples for me.

    except for those few holding it short that want to cover before sco ceases to exist. There might be a few people in that boat.

    does anyone know where i can BUY linux dvd viewing software? I have only used MPlayer in the past.
