It's a pity that this is going to be buried all the way down the comments, but since I'm actively trying to go into Serenity knowing *nothing* about the movie..., it would be nice if Slashdot didn't post God Damn SPOILERS in the front page story.
Brig. Gen O'Neil: Good news! We have found a planet capable of sustaining life that is a considerable distance from Caprica. We can relocate your people through the Stargate and you will be rid of the Cylons forever.
It was pretty, yes, but I GET TO PLAY WITH A GRAVITY GUN!

The Google News Dilemma
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
1. Create some cool web portal things
2. Drive traffic to it
3. ??
4. Profit!
Google, like the rest of the world, is still stuck on figuring out #3.:-)
Why do they have to make a profit from Google News anyway ? They make enough money with some of their other services, surely they could allow News to remain as a "loss leader" high profile mindshare venture. They do value the good will they have in the market place, moving News out of beta without changing anything from how it is now, would be a good move in that direction.
Surely "Not everything has to make money" can be reconciled with "don't be evil".
Now, I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the series is called the World Series because it was originally sponsored by the US magazine World Report. Can anybody confirm this for me?
thecounter.com is going to be based on people who look at crappy homepages etc. though, which I would think is not representative either.
Perhaps so. I only stated that it's more realistic than w3schools's stats, if you're looking for the "general" market share. Any increase is a good increase, but as one of the first posters to this story said, it's not at 15% yet.
Hopefully 1.0PR (preview release) is only days away...
Just one thing, w3schools.com is a site for people who write websites, so they'd naturally have a much higher percentage of non-IE browsers than the more general browsing population.
Personally, I keep an eye on thecounter.com to see how Mozilla's market share is doing. It's certainly more realistic than the linked article statistics page. Pity Google removed browser stats from the zeitgeist page.
Do people really watch the entire '24' series on DVD?
Yes actually. In fact, when I first get them, I organise a number of friends to come over, and we marathon them in a single day. Only takes about 18 hours (with no comercials). Start at 10am Saturday, finish at 4am Sunday morning.
Will be doing this again for season 3 in the next couple of months...:)
Man, you put wayyy too much work into decyphering a typo.;-) Slow day at work?
Not too bad, thanks for asking.:)
I wasn't sure if it was, hence asking. It could have been referring to a dual channel stream of some kind, which would be interesting to me, if that was the case. Since no one's said that's the case, I'm going with typo.
They've refered to it as "bistream" in the title of the post on theora.org, and in the body of that post. But elsewhere they call it "bitstream", and that makes more sense to me at least. The term "bistream" is also not in their FAQ.
It was on the news here. He was sending the same message to all the users in his addressbook with the send to all function of his phone. So if you have a hundred ppl listed it can add up pretty quick.
It's not said in that short article, but I'm pretty sure it's the same guy that I read about a week or so ago. And he was sending the bulk of the SMS's to a spare SIM card that he had, so that he wouldn't annoy all his friends. Small mercies I suppose.
When I changed over to dvorak, I physically remapped my keys. However, during an upgrade of my computer, I got a different keyboard, and since now I touch type no problem at all, I left the keys arranged in qwerty. This means I don't get the different hight problem with keys, and also people can't use my computer unless I'm there:)
I've lost count of the number of people that sit down at my home machine and type ",,,v" (that's what www. is remapped to for those that are wondering:)
Reason I switched to dvorak: I was unemployed and bored, so I did it for the hell of it. Reason I've stayed with it: my wrists don't bother me nearly as much with this keyboard map, as well as I'm faster than I was on qwerty. Plus, the aforementioned fun with people trying to use my computer.

Snopes says false.

Also, as of the 18th August, if you have one of the ATI - HL2 deals (9800XT 9600XT with HL2 coupon) you can pull the game from Steam.
Check out the offer for details of how to get it.
I'm not a CS player myself, but I pulled it down to have a look at the new engine. Very nice, looking forward to HL2.

N.B. a cop told me that one

Google returns Results 1 - 8 of about 17 for bistream theora for me, which is few enough for me to consider it a typo. Is it a typo, or does it mean a dual stream of some kind ?

I haven't even visited the site in years, literally. Do people still use that?
In a word, yes. Yahoo is still one of the most popular sites on the Internet, even if you don't think so.

ARIA (Australia'a RIAA) plainly stated barely 2 months ago that australia had had the worst sales of CDs in history in 2003. Is someone lying here?
Worst sales of CDs in history huh ?
Got the figures for sales of CDs in 1975 to compare to ?

Ars Technica story on the same thing.
KDE could include spikes that stick out of the computer and pierce my skull every five minutes
[SA]HatfulOfHollow, is that you ?
Perhaps you should go back to 3rd grade and learn to recognize sarcasm when you read it.
I didn't think they taught sarcasm in American schools anymore ?
