Why not replace pppoe w/ pptp? That would give basically the same infrastructure but with encryption of your customers' data.

Not Niobe. She was going to blowup the main power station and did so successfully. We have no reason to believe anything bad happened to her (indeed, she's in the next movie).

The woman I was referring to was working to shutdown the backup power system. While she and the rest of the crew are doing that, their ship gets blown up and they die, the woman slumps over the laptop she's working on to crack into the power system. This is the computer that Trinity sits down at.

Well, I own neither a Tivo nor a ReplayTV (nor a TV for that matter) but having to void your warranty in order to do any of the Tivo hacks doesn't seem to be that supportive of the user community. Especially when compared to ReplayTV where you just have to download a piece of software and you can interoperate perfectly with the machine.

My impression is that Tivo captured mindshare and fandom through the first mover advantage. People say "Tivo" as the word for "PVR" because they penetrated the media first.

I'm a geeky person that supports a bunch of no budget audio reporters that use mini disc recorders. I'd love to get them to use a product like this but a mic input is a requirement for field audio reporting. Any chance of that happening soon?

To do this on a Tivo you have to remove the hard drive and put it in a PC, futz with it and put it back in. If you have a series 2 Tivo you can setup the net connection to download the movies over the network but its not a friendly process. To download shows from a series 1 you have to add an gray market network card.

With ReplayTV you can just use DV Archive to download shows from it. Friendly interface, no warranty voiding required.

Search around google for "tivo extract" and you'll find stuff. If you have a series 1 Tivo you'll either have to put the Tivo hard drive into a computer or install a gray market ethernet hack. Series 2 Tivos have an ethernet port but as far as I've heard you can only share videos between Tivos, not to a computer without a hack. The hack involves installing software by taking the Tivo hard drive out and putting it into a computer.

Sorry to respond twice, didn't catch your last paragraph.

I think the only reason something like a wireless "community" isn't considered more seriously is because there's no benefit to having access to more than your own, unless you don't have one to begin with and you're leeching of course.

This sounds like it could have been uttered by someone during the primoridial development of the Internet. "No benefit to having more than your own"?! I've heard someone observe that the value (meant in the same sense you allude to) of a network goes up with the square of the number of people attached to that network.

Therefore, the challenge before those that believe in community wireless networks is to bootstrap the process so that a network can be built that can support an "interesting" number of participants. Those participants will probably use things like, p2p file sharing, gaming, chatting, location and mapping services, community audio and video content, etc.

You could very easily make a searchable BitTorrent network.

Very easily? A global search with millions of autonomous and unreliable nodes? The gnutella developers don't seem to think its easy. Edonkey itself is not scalable on this, so they apparently don't think that's easy either.
