  1. His own damn fault. on Online Plagiarist Sues University · · Score: 4, Interesting

Welcome to the Real World, kid. You break the rules, you get caught, your own damn fault.

Plagiarism is an offense in which nobody wins. People who actually do the work are hurt because they won't rank as high (most Universities run off bell curves). The University gets themselves discredited and the value eof everybody's degree goes down if it happens too often. Everbody ends up with paint on their faces.

Only person possibly standing to benefit from it is the Plagiariser. So if you go down, it's your fucking problem.

This kid really needs to grow the hell up.

FC2 has been out for almost 2 weeks. Considering a major migration to the 2.6 kernel, which still has a host of compatibility issues with a bunch of programs (particularily sound drivers, what with there being a move from OSS to ALSA). I'd say give it a little bit of time. Yeah, the test versions are supposed to iron out these kinks, but in this world, I don't think that the beta test really gets underway until the official release comes out.

The fixes will come. apt and yum repositories will get better. The dual boot problem will get fixed.

Quit your bellyaching and have a little bit of patience. If you really have a problem, I recommend that you either start contributing to the project (It _IS_ open source, you know) or you march right into Red Hat's office and demand your $0 back.

So, Apple is half-hearted about security vulnerabilities because they released a bunch of patches? I fail to see how this is in any way a bad thing. Releasing information about exploits in a closed-source system is kinda stupid. At least Apple is patching these things before they become a problem.

On the most part though, it's a lot easier to administrate a *nix system and keep it secure than it is to do so with a Windows system. It all, for me, comes down to the root/user system. You have a root that you don't use normal stuff for, and so therefore it's a lot more difficult to place undetectable things on a computer on the basis that the only places someone with user access to your comp has is in user-defined places. Namely, /tmp, ~, and anywhere else the user decides to place low restrictions for themselves (say, for me, my /filez partition).

As much as people want to bitch about how "insecure" *nix systems are, frankly, they're just better designed from a coding perspective than Windows. Windows seems to have been spending a lot of its time playing catchup with features, and now they're feeling the brunt of not practicing efficient coding, and the result is going to be Longhorn (supposedly... I don't know how many times I've heard the "The Next Windows is going to be better" argument... pretty much since 3.1), which is, in effect, a major overhaul and an attempt to make Microsoft's Station Wagons a bit more like BeOS' Batmobiles.... but it seems like it's more likely to become a 12-cylander Viper with the amount of resources they're claiming it's going to need to consume.

I'm happy with my fuel efficient tank that'll work on any road, thank you very much.

    Most open source apps?

I agree with the assertion that GIMP has got absolutely squat on Photoshop. Honestly. That's why I see no problem in dropping the big bucks on PS. But MOST open source apps being the same? Highly doubtful.

OpenOffice handles legacy Word documents better than the "latest and greatest" from Microsoft. Heck, I've had compatibility problems between the equivalent versions of Word for Windows and Word for Mac that have been resolved just by opening the document up in OO.

Bash rocks cmd's socks off. If geeks do one thing exceptionally well, it's command-line tools.

Suffice it to say you saw the FBI warning, can you please skip it already?)

Like I said, GIMP definately has serious disadvantages over Photoshop. But a lot of the other tools that are out there are not as lacking. 99% of the stuff I use that's open-source is in most cases as good as and in many cases better than its proprietary counterpart. The one thing people seem to forget is that in the geek world aesthetics take a back seat to functionality. I don't mind learning curves myself so I find myself able to do a lot more with a fully open source system over a system loaded with its proprietary counterparts.

A lot of people are getting Hard Drive errors with their Karmas. I just got mine back from Warranty replacement (after a month-and-a-half wait and plenty of complaining). Apparently, according to the folks at the Riovolution Forum a lot of people have had this problem (in the same time frame) and are currently going through Hell getting a replacement. I'm surprised I got mine so quickly.

Aside from that, I'm liking the Karma a lot. I just hope my replacement doesn't crap out the same as the first one did. If it does I'm aiming for an iPod.

Other than that, RMML (Rio Music Manager Lite) is a Java-based app that syncs up with the Karma over a dock that can be connected via ethernet. The coolness of this being that it's completely platform independent, and will run on any system that can run Java, including my fedora box. Its compatibility to be runnable on Linux is the main reason why I liked this. OGG and FLAC support are just extras. =)

  17. Re:John von Neumann on Boolean Logic : George Boole's The Laws of Thought · · Score: 1, Informative

Turing machines utilized Boolean logic. At the very base of processor design, you have these things called "gates" which take signals ("on" xor "off", 1 xor 0, high voltage xor low voltage) and process them in a boolean test..... Like, say:

1 OR 0 evaluates to a signal that says "1"
1 AND 0 evaluates to a signal that says "0"
    NOT 0 evaluates to "1"
    etc. etc.

You can then design these gates to go on to make more complicated items key in processor design: encoders, decoders, multiplexors, latches, flip-flops, counters, adders, registers, arithmetic and logic units (ALUs), data paths, data controls, and ultimately a modern processor.

Boolean logic is at the VERY HEART of all this stuff, so, yeah, this has a LOT to do with computers.
