When you send and receive e-mail messages through your ISP, they could easily figure out what times of day you get the most mail, when you send the most mail, your average file attachment size, etc. just by doing a statistical analysis of the mail server's log files; but no one talks about how SendMail could be spyware!
The difference here is that mining sendmail data would occur on their servers using their processing time; my computer is already slow with the OS and my programs, I see no need to slow it down further for someone else's gain with this spyware; really, I paid for my machine, they didn't; Next!
Do they still "yell" at you for not properly shutting down the computer when it boots up again? To bad they didn't apologize instead: "We're sorry about the blue screen/etc; would you like to send debugging info back to MS and get a free upgrade/service pack when available?"
I always see fearful references to '1984' on this site when dealing with this many cameras, so I'm surprised they are getting this much free help from this group.
I'm very sick of the media and government trying to scare people by making them believe that they are at threat from biological and chemical weapons used by terrorists.
I kind of appreciate the "heads up" that the media provides; it may keep some people from having a really bad day;
people in general just have to be trained not to be too panicky (like those people who caused artifical gas shortages on 9/11);
maybe Statistics should become a highschool graduation requirement;
But... here we have an OS which is accused of being monolithic (Windows) yet it's also being criticized because there's more than one way to launch a program?
That's what it is like to "talk" with a few thousand people; many of the possible opinions surface; others don't respond because they are represented already; you probably won't see a collective "you're right" when dealing with this many people;
I haven't been to a bank in years, only credit unions; why go to a bank anyway? I have to believe that the finger printing thing in banks is rare, though;
Pearl Habor saw 2400 military personel dead.
Our final reaction? Nuke Japan.
Many thousands more Americans and others died during the war with Japan following Pearl Harbor;
The death total that prompted the nuke was much greater than 2400 people because of the long war with Japan, but did include the 2400 that you mentioned;
Ending the war when they did also saved countless lives on both sides;
There was a lot of thought and private discussion that occurred before "the bomb" was dropped.
And how many civilians are you prepared to murder to carry out this policy?
You mean those "civilians" that fill the streets in support and joy of this event? Those civilians that volunteer to be the next kamikazis? I feel no love for them.
yet if he were speeding down an American interstate (even as a representative of Elmsoft, and even if going 90 is legal in Russia ), theres obviously grounds for enforcement
But if he drove 90mph in Russia and then flew to the US, should he be imprisoned?
I hope that if there are any splits, they split into 2 competing OS companies, 2 competing office application companies, 2 competing internet companies, etc.
A split to a single os company and a single application company, etc probably won't help, right?
No, that's not the worst case. Worst case is that the virus didn't actually infect the stolen computer, but rather the replacement computer that you're using now...
Or the thief is a career Slashdot first poster and reads this discussion, feels proud for a few minutes, and then destroys the evidence.:)
Adobe will probably try to pacify the public and their outcry over this by significantly lowering the price on some of their popular products;
I hope most people are better than that and show that the public can have a long memory which can be devestating to companies that do insane things like what Adobe has been doing.
Are you just going to try to contact the users of those IPs or contact their ISPs? I'll bet that most of those IPs were not personally hostile towards you, but just didn't know how to patch a MS webserver;
The thing I'm really afraid of is that ISPs across the board will disallow servers which would be no fun; the main reason I pay the extra money for cable modem service here in the backwoods of Wisconsin is because I have the opportunity to set up temporary servers;
preemptive security training via the web would have been nice;

I'm in Atlanta and have not had any trouble accessing CNN and others; it could just be your ISP or some switches along the way that are busy;
It really looks like some people like that karma stuff;
*turns head slowly side to side in disgust/disbelief*
He's answered your questions below, at length
I'm imagining Katz hard at work trying to top this one...

I was recently impressed with:
ren *.txt *.rdy
(much better than click, wait, click,[end],^H,^H,^H,rdy)
* 300 files

... it's not like you're going to meet chicks sitting behind your monitor.
nope, just cables behind my monitor;

works better as 654-5666...
also, try:
4566545642456654564
There's nothing wrong with setting the standard and letting MS Office follow.

Why does it take something like this to get politicians to finally take their jobs seriously and really get work done for the country?
I wish they would work this hard and this serious even in times of peace and prosperity as I expect;

Environmental impact question: how many around the world airline flights could be done in place of one space flight;

I would write the Russian ambassador to inform him of the situation, so that he can take action if he feels it's important.
Replace would with will and things will be good.

I wonder what the tie looks like that oldzoot will be getting? Slashdot green?
