I'm guilty of coming to work with a cold because our sick days come out of the same pool as our vacation days and I like to save those up for when it's sunny out and I'm feeling good.
I think Surface is a bit different though. MS would be very happy if the OEMs all made Win8 tablets that sold better than Surface. They're really in a position where it's hard for them to lose.
It's a problem of perception. The people who expect MS to be a growth company see it as failing. It's in a strong position, just not a growth position. Microsoft's biggest competitors for years to come will be XP and Win7. That's not bad but it's also not growth. People just need to adjust their expectations.
The apps made for Win8 will by default also work for RT. The dev tools give you that for free so as we get more Win8 apps we will get more RT apps. There are also other x86 tablets coming from Lenovo etc so the ecosystem will just continue to grow.
Both have only been out for about a month. It's too early to really tell how either of them are doing. It also takes time to make decisions about pricing.
I agree that touch has its place. And I agree that for me the desktop isn't it. My mouse is still king there. But there is a very big place for touch on a laptop because the laptop is used in a wide range of ergonomic positions. There are lots and lots of times when a dialog pops up and it's just easier to reach out and touch the button than use the trackpad to maneuver the cursor to the right place and click the button. Also, web browsing is just so much more natural with touch.
I find the new Lenovo (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/lenovo-thinkpad-tablet-2) very tempting. Also runs x86 apps but uses a lower power adam processor so it claims 10 hours battery life. Also, no fan so it's light and thin, and has a pen. This is what the Surface RT should have been imo.
No, I didn't get the memo. MS is hell bent on bringing tablets under the Windows ecosystem. Maybe that will work out, maybe not. I don't really give a shit. Steam still works just fine on my PC and there's no indication that MS will do anything to keep it from working fine. Gabe is just worried about the MS Store. He shouldn't be; that's of free - $5 app type games. Steam is still where the real games are.
Apple is in a tight spot here. They really enjoy putting the screws to people who use the very common word "apple" or even an image that is suggestive of such fruit. So they can't really say using "memory" is out of bounds.
Which versions of Linux? Are you saying on binary can attack all of them? No. You are not. Windows has decades of backwards compatibility to deal with. Don't try and compare phones with desktops. Callin bs on that bs out of the gate.
Zune was nice hardware and a great service that was just too late to the market. Surface is great hardware that works really well with Win8. It's not yet too late as tablets will be around for quite a while. So the analogy to Zune just doesn't work.

Source? I thought xbox moved into the black a couple of years ago. Or maybe you're not taking xbox live numbers into account?
Agree about Surface RT. I really like mine. It feels solid and works well.

Millions of iPad owners say you're wrong.

As a parent I'm sure you know and are just in denial. It's a thin sheen of bugger / snot. Better to face the truth imo.
I'm guessing you've not actually tried it. Surface RT works just fine in my lap and on a try table.

Same basic form as the Surface RT which works just fine in the lap. I'm guessing you've not actually tried it.
Prices are comparable there to other places for the same unit. You get what you pay for.
Computers sold through the MS store come pre-cleaned of all that crap.
To be fair, not many use it on the desktop.

Steam is one thing that makes PC gaming so much better than console gaming. If you move the console that may just be it for PC gaming.

Jane, you ignorant slut!

Wow. Hope you didn't go to bed thinking your guy was going to win. You would have missed an awesome victory speech for one thing.
You should bottle those tears and sell them to Nestle. They're soooo much sweeter than sugar.
Canada doesn't have wifi? Surface RT doesn't have a sim slot so mobile plans shouldn't come into play.
Or just get the 64GB model.
