well, sometimes it is good not to live in the states. in most parts of "old europe" (SCNR), lawyers are not allowed to charge what they want. the cost of lawyers is a given percentage of the amount in dispute. hence, you know in advance, what the cost of a given lawsuit will be.
some of these mechanisms are probable on earth, but not on mars. the athmosperic conditions on mars are slightly reducing (chemically speaking), so there is not a big chance for thermal oxidation. sure, they changed in the last few billion years, but I assume any precipitation reaction is more feasible...
no sir. tcp/ip does not transmit the hardware id. the ip head contains the source and destination ip address (thats where the name comes from...). the link level packets, which transport ip in i.e. ethernet, contain the mac address, which is resolved by mechanisms as ARP.
well, that all renders down to one point: IF you steal hardware, rip out every component which allows "THEM" to identify you: cpu (p3 serial #), ethernet (MAC), mainboard (bios serial #), disks,...
that leaves you with an empty case, maybe also a 3.5" floppy drive.
The quality of a review certainly depends on the way it is done. If you are testing some new stuff, and call the manufacturer to send you a sample, they'll most definitely pick the best they could find.
If, on the other hand, the reviewer buys the stuff in a random store, it reflects the product quality in a much more precise way. Of course, even then there is a chance that the reviewer gets a test sample which outperforms samples of the same production, but there is an equal chance, that the test sample is worse than average. Good tests can ONLY be done by random sampling a large number of samples.
Now, if the phone would use a 2-axis or even better 3-axis gyro, it could be used for navigation, even in GPS-uncovered areas (buildings...). It's the same principle they use in planes for the so called INS - inertial nav system.
Just imagine the possibilities of such a navigation system. Finally, there's no more excuse for not finding the office of your PHB in a new building .
no bullshit. i was refering to the process of filesharing as such, and to the perfect reproduction of any file. you can also spread cd images, which makes mp3 conversion unnecessary...
i read the article. there is no information about the production method except of that it uses a microwave plasma.
why do you think all the stones they produce are yellow - usually this is a sign for iron contamination of the carbon matrix - either because of usage as a catalyst, or because of contamination through plasma sputtering.
then have a quick look in the carbon phase diagram and tell me how they get this metastable phase - diamond - fixed. IAASSC - i am a solid state chemist. are you ?
there should be several ways to distinguish between natural and synthetic diamonds. synthetic diamonds are almost always made using catalysts like nickel or iron - thats why they are yellowish. usually, natural diamonds have some small inclusions, which arent present on synthetic. for a properly equipped and trained diamond dealer, it should be no problem to find out if a stone is synthetic or not, by means of non-destructive chemical analysis methods like X-ray fluorescence. so this hazard to de'beers can be handled in some way.
compared to that, filesharing creates exact duplicates of any file - there is no way to tell if some file is an original or its tenth copy...
well, another case of the "not invented here" syndrome is said to be the invention of a space-useable ballpen.
the NASA seeemed to spend a lot (several $100k) to develop a ballpen which could be used upside down in space. the russians used to use pencils at $0.1/piece...
As the elements 111 and 112 are also discovered by GSI, and the whole hierarchy Europium (element 63), Germanium (32), Hassium (108) and now Darmstadtium (110) is taken, I am really curious how they will name these two.
Maybe, they'll take Wixhausenium (GSI is located in a district of Darmstadt called Wixhausen), but that wouldn't be too good as the german word Wichsen means "jerk off...", and the words Wix... and Wichs... are spoken exactly the same.:-)
Not if the ice is floating on the water. The amount of water displaced by ice is exactly the amount of water generated by the melting ice. - Archimedes' law.
Good PSUs contribute a lot towards system stability. For example, a moving head in the HDD causes current transients (so does a CPU switching between normal operation and power saving mode). Bad PSUs have huge voltage drops during these transients, good PSUs can buffer them quite well. These transients can cause anything between nothing and total system crash.
Also, the ability to filter noise out of the AC helps with stability...

but you need to press the buttons in the giant face on mars in the right order...
Well, for some time, it was also possible to download a (stolen) version of Doom III... Nevertheless, Doom III made it onto the list.
GNU Hurd didn't make it into the list. Odd....:-)

I guess the AOL software might "accidentially" transmit the ethernet hardware (MAC) id of the machine...

800 Megs of Data Per Person Last Year - is this the amount of surveillance data the Department of Homeland Security was generating per person ?

Does anyone know if the PLOS journals are indexed in major scientific databases (CAS, ISI WebOfScience,...) ? Couldn't find anything on the web site.
that all sounds like the nigerian scam, but built especially for spammers :-)
... but in some way they assume that dl'ing music and movies generates revenues ????
