I guess you weren't on the east coast of the US during the blackout last August. Most cell phones didn't work - probably due to overload. But POTS worked (at least in NJ), but not if you had only cordless phones. God help anyone who had an actual emergency during the blackout.

  8. Re:Technic? on Lego Goes Back to the Basics: Building Blocks · · Score: 1

I'm soon to turn 35, I had a bunch of the Lego "Expert Builder" sets when I was about 10 or 11. The auto chassis set that I had was a front-engine, rear-wheel drive car with a two-speed transmission. I believe the part number was 956 - back when the sets only had 3 digits. Also had a farm tractor, sky copter, bulldozer, fork lift and a bunch of the space sets. Still have most of the pieces in a suitcase upstairs, including some lights that I bought on a family trip to Europe. I wish I still had the instruction manuals and the "idea books" that they published. I, too, was completely put off by over-specialization of pieces. I think they jumped the shark with the planetary gear differential. But you gotta admit, making a working rack&pinion steering set with those spinner 4x4 plates was kinda cheesy. Good luck to Lego on the retro move. I hope it saves their bacon - I can't imagine a world for my kids without Lego.

  9. Re:30 second skip vs vcr commercial skip on The State of Automated Commercial Skipping · · Score: 2, Informative

Older (and now the really new) ReplayTVs have automatic commercial skip. The technology detects the brief black screen before and after the commercial breaks and skips over them automatically.
For me, it works most of the time. The times it doesn't is typically during shows with a lot of black gaps like 24 and Law & Order.

I haven't seen ipods for anything less than MSRP at any B&M either, probably due to the demand being so high.

  12. Re:Rescue Mission on Sequence of Events During Columbia Mission · · Score: 1

Only Discovery and Endeavour had the gear required for connection to the ISS. Columbia did not in order to keep its cargo bay large enough for bigger payloads. A mission to try to get all 7 astronauts to the ISS could have been more dangerous than risking the landing. Keep in mind, nobody new beforehand that the astronauts were gonna die so it would have been a matter of weighing risks. The choice would have been taking a known high risk or an unknown risk.
