iTunes and iPods have made a significant impact on how popular music is consumed, but pretty much zero impact on all other genres. Outside pop music, CD sales have been growing over time, and the online sales of these other genres is pretty much dead in the water.

"Outside pop music?" You mean, outside of 90% of music sold? I guess the rich yuppies that love jazz and pay out the nose for hi-fis and horrible DRM'd junk like SACD and DVD Audio can prop up the physical media market a bit longer.

Some forms of video - cheap date movies, stupid comedy (Borat etc) and other sorts of low-end pop-junk like sit-com TV shows will be downloaded. Non-pop culture film (serious movies, foreign film, classics, etc.); i.e. things that have lasting value; that you can watch many times over your lifetime will still be distributed on physical media.

Why? You are romanticizing physical media. There's nothing particularly special about it, other than it's a bit more reliable than a hard drive.

You don't know much about DVD vs BD do you?

Au Contraire, I own a BR player and I know an awful lot about both formats. I can drone on about U-Matic, Laserdisc or Betacam too if you'd prefer.

All of the "upgraded" features Blu-Ray offers over DVD BESIDES greater resolution are either:

    1)Related to DRM/region control
2)Marketing-driven features (such as PiP) that don't improve the user experience and will remain unknown/ignored by a majority of consumers.

The size of the format is another tangible advantage, but that is more useful for data than movies. From a production/authoring standpoint, Blu-Ray is a bigger headache than DVD or HD-DVD. But it's what we've got to work with now, so let's suck it up and move on, I guess...

  7. Re:That's a Shame on Toshiba Making Funeral Plans for HD DVD · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm glad you put "nice" in quotes. BluRay is a moving target of a platform. Newer profiles don't add much (who the fuck wants to watch picture in picture through an entire movie?) except complexity and consumer confusion. Consumers don't want to have to check the fine print every time to see if their movie will play, especially since Blu Ray costs more and does not offer anything over DVD except a high resolution.

m tv dont have HDCP, it's a 1080i set. Bluray and HDDVD is useless as nither will output anything but 480p out the Component output. In fact this is mentioned in EVERY HDDDVD and BluRay players manual.

"720p and 1080i output is disabled on component out on discs that have the copy protection flag set." EVERY SINGLE DISK HAS THIS FLAG SET!

I'm sorry, but there's enough FUD in this article. You are talking out of your ass-my PS3 plays Bluray discs in 1080i over the component out, and my cousin's Toshiba HD-DVD player will play HD-DVDs in 1080i and 720p over component. Neither will upscale regular DVDs over component.

DRM, pointless format wars, and needlessly complex standards are frustrating, but there's no need to mislead anyone.

Remember, the truth is more easily found when most conflict is filtered out

They watch both sides of the debate between Britney Spears getting into a car and what drugs were found in Heath Ledger's apartment? American cable news is for shit. Any time they hit on a relevant issue it's practically by accident, and I can't imagine that anyone that has time to watch both CNN and FOX News has a job. Their websites are a little better, but it's still 90% fluff. Try the BBC, they actually have some reporters left there. It's only about 50% fluff.

"Freedom of the press only applies to those who have a press," so the old saying goes. In the old days, the cost of a press and its upkeep was a significant barrier to the dissemination of ideas.

Of course, this pales in comparison to the barrier to entry in television or radio. Unless you are a multi-billionaire, you won't even get a seat at the table to talk about getting an FCC license. As for starting a cable channel-who will support you? All the other cable infrastructure is controlled by huge conglomerates that want to push their own channels. Even Ted Turner is too small of a fish to have any major influence these days.

Maybe you think the Internet is some sort of panacea for the lack of diversity on the airwaves. Think again-most of the people on the Internet are visiting the websites for CNN, ESPN, etc-the same huge conglomerates that control TV and radio.

The fact is, journalism is dying in this country. The media is an echo chamber for those in power, and itself. True investigative journalism is being squeezed further and further into the margins in this country. Maybe you think that's what "the market" supports. But since "the market" is a rigged game as long as the airwaves rely on outdated modulation techniques, artificial scarcity and broadcast licenses granted in perpetuity. It is a rigged game as long as fewer and fewer corporations are allowed to monopolize our ears and eyes. "We're only giving the people what they want," the broadcast giants cry as they eliminate choice.
