David Sorkin is the screenwriter who wrote A Few Good Men and he also executive produced the excellent Sports Night which originally came on CBS. I also heard that he was recently arrested for possession of psilocybin mushrooms(!) funny this article doesn't mention this. All in all, a genius, but also a complicated and troubled man.
I couldn't agree more. Anandtech, Tom's Hardware Guide, etc are basically circle-jerks for "l33t" Windows gamers who want to justify their unfortunate tendency to drop big bucks on the "latest and greatest" computer hardware.
"Technical articles" basically consist of, "okay, here's this new chipset, let's compare it to an older chipset, (CLICK TO THE NEXT PAGE TO SEE MORE BANNER ADS). Wow, the new chipset (which just happens to be made by one of our advertisers) performs faster than the old one, as evidenced by this graph where the red line is 1/10 of an inch longer than the blue line."
I quit reading that tripe years ago-the incestuous relationships between those sites and their advertisers is even worse than AOL ads on TNT. Please, don't click through on this article and give these fuckers more undeserved money.
Mac users like myself tend to play games on consoles, where programmers actually care about "getting down" with the hardware and tightly optimizing for a platform.
PC programmers don't give a shit about you if your PC rig is older than 2 years (sometimes even less-look at all the people creaming over DOOM3, which could easily cause cost over $500).
The console world is full of virtuoso development houses that continually churn out great games (Capcom, Konami, SEGA to name a few).
The PC game market is still reinventing Doom, Warcraft, and flight simulators, over and over again. Is it really worth it to waste money on a platform that holds its audience in such low regard?
I guess I'm gonna have to start ripping CD's off from the store instead of stealing them online. After all, if they're gonna replace their security guards with fat, pimply-faced l33t h4x0rz, I probably have a better chance outrunning them...
At my current financial juncture, I'm not sure it would be the wisest to get rid of my Blue-and-White. I'm a video editor, so basically the machine has to be up all the time, either waiting for me or rendering stuff...
I could theoretically float a fairly new G4 system on my credit card and swap out all the parts, but switching over hard drives, system software, etc would take a lot more time than just replacing a CPU.
I'm most curious about the G4 slot on Mot's own motherboards. Does anyone happen to work with them on a regular basis? If so, is the board ZIF-compatible with the G3? How much voltage does it draw? (G3 mainboards can spit a variety of voltages, but changing the voltage setting requires a lot of hacking and is probably not worth the effort).
Is this the same verizon that had phone lines so bad that I couldn't hold a dialup connection? (And sorry, they don't guarantee anything other than 'voice quality' connection). The same verizon that was either charging me long distance to dial places less than 2 miles away, or charging me an extra $30 a month for phone service to "extended" areas?
Or is it the verizon who provides T-1 width DSL to my friends in Washington DC for $25/mo? That verizon which that has the best USENET server I've seen out of several broadband providers? (We're talking ZERO dropped binaries.)
A pity they mention J.R.R. Tolkien (peripherally important at best)and stuff like "Hacking into Computer systems," but there's no mention of the first cable modem game of all, the SEGA channel!
It's funny how someone can slap together a timeline of their own personal preferences, (obviously without doing any research) and call it the History of Online Gaming. This is almost as bad as that Tom's Hardware Article that said "DOOM is a watershed in console gaming," along with a milquetoast collection of benchmarks that had nothing to do with gameplay or innovation. Someone should double-check this stuff before they post it.
Why is the Slashdot crowd always hanging on some vaporware peddling by a man who's on his way down in the video game world?
Look, Carmack did great with Wolfenstein 3D, and Doom was pretty okay, but there's only so many times you can dress up a cabbage in a pretty silk number and call it Cinderella. FPS's are like porn-once you've seen one, you've seen 'em all, and id's offerings aren't even close to the best anymore.
"But wait!" you cry. "Doom3 has like, hardware texture and lighting, and zbuggering, and mip-mapped megapixels, or something. I read it on a benchmark site where a red bar (which represented Doom3) was longer than a blue bar (which represented Half-Life)." Listen friend, if you wanna fetishize technology, be my guest. Pull that $400 waffle iron out of your case and have intercourse with it for all I care(I recommend doing this 2-3 hours after powering down the computer, so as to allow it to cool down fully.) But don't kid yourself about Doom 3, it's not going to be a revolution in video games, or even FPS's for that matter. Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, the Sims-those are the true innovators of FPS. Doom 3 will come and go, and your life won't change a bit (although you might stay up a few nights crusing USENET for cracks). In the meantime, realize that Carmack, like Michael Jackson, was once the "King of Pop," but now that title belongs to Britney Spears. So go buy a Pepsi, ya know?
Most Linux users boot into Windows to play PC games, and since the Windows version offers more features, (and probably less configuration headaches) why bother with the Linux version?
Linux for games, or surfing the Internet with AOL, or FreeCell, is the wrong market. Linux needs more industrial strength server software to truly take mindshare away from Windows.
actually, Star Trek V, the one that Shatner wrote and directed, is by far the worst. It was so bad that some guys did a homebrew version of MST3k on it...Here's a link.
dreamcast "GD-ROMs" are stock yamaha CD-ROMs with a firmware or bootstrap program that tells them to only read GDs (this is easily defeated however)
On a related note, the Nintendo gamecube is a stock panasonic DVD mechanism. Sega and Nintendo can't afford to mass manufacture custom drives...hey, even Sony and Microsoft don't do that...
Does anyone remember those Capcom 2D arcade games that were Dungeons & Dragons themed? Shadow Over Mystara I think one was called....you could play 4 players with dwarves, fighters, thieves...I always liked being the cleric.
D & D as an action game was an interesting take...wonder if anyone will ever try that again?

Magical spell is ai-ai-poo!

I can't think of something I give less of a fuck about.
Please let this be first! I'm in Washington DC this week, so it makes sense.
HAH!

So suck it!

It's filthy, dirty comments like this. Why don't you wash your mouth out with SOAP?

I am confused. Think I'll lie down for awhile...

Virtua On is so awesome with the twin sticks...I could spend hours in the arcade dueling with my old friends...
The PS2 has less types of controllers, but it has some unusual ones like the vibrating neck massager for Rez.
>I hope you can see this, Because I'm doing it as hard as I possibly can!
More like smacking you down with the stick of FIRST POST!

I much prefer this sort of real life karma to the inane imaginary sort that limits and extinguishes discussion on certain weblogs.
