    You are missing the point.

SCO's beef with the GPL is the same as Microsoft's. It is its so-called "viral" nature. That is, if your software incorporates any code which is GPLed, your software must also be released under a GPL-compatible license.

SCO's argument, as I understand it, is that US copyright law states that you cannot lose control of your work by accident. The GPL states that you cannot revoke the rights it grants: any code which has ever been released under the GPL must always be available under the GPL. SCO are suing IBM for GPLing code SCO claim is theirs, but SCO have also distributed Linux, implicitly accepting the GPL license on the kernel, and therefore implicitly GPLing their code. So if the GPL stands, they have lost the case already. You must have read that argument a thousand times on Slashdot and Groklaw.

So they say: we did not knowingly GPL our IP, so, under US copyright law, it cannot be subject to the GPL, which requires us to relinquish rights we have not agreed to relinquish. Since US copyright law disagrees with the GPL, the GPL violates the law.

Is this true or false? IANAL, so I can't answer that one. But it certainly isn't as cut and dried as you make it sound.

Think carefully before you tell me the "moral" course of action would be to resign rather than push this baseless lawsuit. That's the glib answer, but all that would means is that the company would get someone else with fewer scruples. If you want something different, you need to change the system. Good luck finding an alternative to capitalism that the USA will adopt.

Anyway, I'm drifting, the point is, if Mozilla can get the marketing right and get the word spread about its capabilities, web developers will wake up to how useless IE's standards support is and may start helping push the alternatives.

In this I think you are correct. Remember the state of things back when IE and Navigator were competing? Web designers would use the full features of their preferred browser, and possibly add an emasculated version of the site for those whose tastes differ. But the things I'm thinking of were those little banners you got everywhere - "This Site Best Viewed With Netscape Navigator: Click Here To Install."

If web designers like CSS2, and web designers use CSS2, and web designers put, on their emasculated non-CSS2-versions of their sites, links to simple installers for the Windows version of, say, Firebird, then think of all the clueless users who will click those links, and start using the better browser, without even having to think about what they're doing?

To me, this looks like one of the most likely means by which alternative browsers could gain market share.

In all three cases I cite, there is indeed a lively "free" movement. But the old-economy corporations still exist, and more than that, they still control the sectors in which they operate; most people still buy (or pirate) CDs and DVDs, and most people still pay huge premiums for proprietary software.

With the bitter experience of the current digital revolution behind them, the big corporations will incorporate strong DRM in molecular constructors from the beginning. Do you think you'll even be able to use "free" designs in them? Not without violating the DMCA, mate.
