Wi-Fi was "invented" and developed by Lucent/AT&T/NCR in the Netherlands in 1990. They were the first to bring a WiFi product to the market. So you can not claim they did not invest in it's development.

This might mean that there is a traffic jam at that location.

Each TomTom with HD traffic will also be equiped with a GSM sim and this enhanced traffic information is send via GPRS to these devices.

  7. Already common in The Netherlands on Banks to Use 2-factor Authentication by End of 2006 · · Score: 1
Here in The Netherlands all banks already implemented a 2-factor Authentication for years.

There are 4 main systems in place:
    • Challenge - Response based on a "calculator" that is linked to your account

    • Challenge - Response based on a generic calculator in which you insert your bank card

    • Challenge - Response based on a list of random codes that you received from the bank

    • Challenge - Response based on a SMS Text Message to your mobile phone

The first requires you to carry your little "calculator" with you if you want to make payments. When you receive your calculator you have to enter a specific code to link the calculator to your account.

The second allows you to use the "calculator" from other people, because you have to insert your bank card into the device (most bank card in The Netherlands have a digital chip on the card). So if you are not at home, but you can borrow a calculator, you can make transactions.

The third system asks you to pick a number from a sheet with random numbers. This list is send by the bank via postal mail to you. Once a number is used, it is no longer valid. When all codes are used, you will receive a new list.

The forth system is the easiest. Each time you want to make a transaction the bank sends you a code in a SMS text message to your mobile phone (the mobile number was registered before with the bank). You can than use this number as the reponse.

Most people are used to this kind of authentication and do not find it difficult to use. Electronic banking is also moving towards a unified payment across different banks. They have introduced iDEAL http://www.ideal-betalen.nl/. When a e-merchant is connected via iDEAL than you can click on the iDEAL logo as a payment option. You than select your own bank from a list and you are then forwarded to your normal electronic banking pages from your own bank. You use the same system that you would normally use to transfer money and in the background a noticatication is send to the e-merchant when you have submitted the order.

  10. Gentoo now has "source delta's" reducing traffic on Delta Compression for Linux Security Patches? · · Score: 3, Interesting
Well, gentoo is known for the fact that you download the source of every program and than start compiling. These sources are distributed in .tar.gz or .tar.bz form and can be very large. A version change (even a change from .0.0.1 to .0.0.2) has it's own tarball and therefor is downloaded again completly. But, the real changes between these 2 can be small.

Enter "deltup" a tool that looks at to tarrballs and gives you a diff between the 2 that you can use to "transform the old tarball to a exact copy of the new tarball", it even preserves MD5 checksums compatibility. Now some enterprising gentoo user create a "dynamic deltup server" that automates the creation of these delta files, and people can reuse the delta files that other people used.

Using this technique in combination with gentoo portage people can reduce there traffic with on average 75%.

My Order Management System does not run under Linux, My Billing Application does not run under linux.

All the rest works via open office, outlook web access and other applications, but the biggest problem is that unless the core applications of your company are available for Linux, you can not switch.

It starts way back in 1997 when the German magazine places some of their issues online at a dutch ISP (XS4ALL). In these issues they describe how to derail german trains.

A German Court rules that these documents are illegal and these publications are illegal in Germany. German ISP are orderded to block the URL to XS4ALL. Because blocking something on the internet is virtually impossible these blocks were lifted because a lot of people started to publish mirrors of these documents.

Back to April this year ...
The German Railroads suddenly notice that these documents are still online and available and through a (dutch) court order forces XS4ALL to take these pages down.

XS4ALL is applealing this decision and they are still in court (you can check the XS4ALL pages at http://www.xs4all.nl/nieuws/overzicht/radikal.html )

At the same time Indymedia plublishes a list with mirrors where these documents can be found ...
and that is now illegal to. They want to appleal, but as always .. money is an issue ..

  18. Using "Zappi" as a replacement of steel on Transparent Concrete · · Score: 1
In The Netherland professor Mick Eekhut is doing research into using glas like building materials.
He calls his "glass" Zappi and you can find some more details here
    Here is an abstract:

    Abstract
Glass is not generally used for loadbearing building components. The primary reason for this is that once the failure process starts in a glass component, the cracks run throughout the entire component. As a consequence the component fails completely in its loadbearing function. This is generally resolved by using metal components in the design that serve as a backup.
For architectural reasons the use of metal components is not desirable while the presence of metal components designed to carry all the loads if the glass fails, obviates the need for a loadbearing function in the glass.
To resolve these problems a hybrid glass/polymer composite system has been developed. Special tempering treatments have been developed to increase the toughness of the glass. In addition a method of combining the specially tempered glass with polymers has been developed. In combination these processes give the following properties :
    • structural engineering properties comparable with aluminium.
    • reduced chance of crack initiation and crack propagation in the tempered glass.
    • high residual strength of the component after accidental damage.
    • slow progressive collapse of components if damage exceeds a certain criterion allowing for sufficient time to evacuate the building.
    • very large components are possible
The resulting system has the advantage of allowing complete transparency, while having adequate strength, stiffness and safety to compete with metals while the increased architectural possibilities outweigh the cost of the components.
