I remember using Photoshop 4 for Unix on some SGI hardware a long time ago..now THAT'S a niche market if I ever saw one.

Not real sure if Adobe even makes Photoshop for Unix anymore. Basically, a group of folks have to get together and use their buying power to influence a port. If there were enough people lined up to buy Macromedia Studio 2004 for Linux that it would balance out Macromedia's dev costs, I'm sure they'd do it.

Maybe someone needs to start a real petition. It's about time for Linux to move from the desktop/server image to the production/artist image. We need more apps to create with.

Same thing happened to me recently. I put together a webserver for a friend and based it on an Athlon XP2100 with a crappy ECS motherboard.

Had it working fine at home under light load but it was acting funny during software installation. Thought it was the crap CDRom drive I threw in it and ignored it. Big mistake.

Later I took it to his office, hooked it to the t1 and got it all setup. It was working ok..until the freezups, random reboots and crashing started THE NEXT DAY.

He finally dropped it off at my work and I double checked everything. I got it narrowed down to the stupid cpu heatsink/fan, and after much cursing, removed it. Hmm. Here's something I didn't notice before. The bottom of the heat sink is NOTCHED to match the PGA the cpu fits in. What a novel idea..only I had the heatsink flipped 180 degrees. No wonder it was such a bitch to install...and remove. Reinstallation went well (still a pain), and the server has been perfect ever since. But that cdrom is still sketchy.

Note to self: spend the few extra bucks for a name brand cdrom next time.

    1. Someone has something I want to buy.
    2. I buy it.
    3. It's mine. The seller's rights terminate the second they hand it to me.
    4. I can use it or throw it off a bridge. Doesn't matter either way.

I agree with your point about drivers under linux. I recently bought a playstation controller adapter to use with ePSXe, a playstation emulator. It's made by Soyo and connects via usb. Well, guess what? I plugged it in and usbview showed a 'psx-usb pad'. So I plugged a playstation controller into it, configured Omnijoy in ePSXe, and I was ready to get my game on. I couldn't believe everything worked so well.

On the other hand, I tried it on my evil twin pc running XP (it's for my wife and roommate). After reading through dozens of message boards bitching about it, I found out that the drivers that ship with it won't work for XP. You'll launch a game and it'll lock up your pc. Well, that's wonderful. After some more digging I found some beta drivers that work (or are supposed to, haven't really tried it in windows fully).

The whole driver situation, particularly for edge peripherals like this, is pretty funny. Mandrake 9.1 supported it out of the box (along with my Microsoft Sidewinder gamepad), while windows needed not only drivers, but SPECIAL drivers.

I'm really starting to feel sorry for XP users.

Also I don't see too many advocates of piracy. People are pirating music for a number of reasons. The absurd price of cd's is one, the unavailability of online music stores is two, the local unavailability of hard copies of music is three..there are just so many reasons behind it. If the record industry hadn't been sleeping for the last 5 years we would probably have a decent iTunes type online store years ago. Regardless, there aren't many outspoken piracy advocates; on the contrary, I read alot more posts from people to the effect that they'd buy more music if it was offered to them at a reasonable price, and that's the reason iTunes exploded like it did.

It's about time they bought a big stake in VMware or another emulation company, and let MacOSX run on x86 hardware. It'd save them time on development and cost. Then again, Apple can't compete outside their bubble of influence. The clone market nearly destroyed them before. I guess after all is said and done they need their high prices to keep them alive.
