  1. Re:it comes with the ct magazine on Knoppix 3.3 Update, 3.4 C't Edition Are Out · · Score: 4, Informative

The hard drive installer script for knoppix rocks.

Just type knx-hdinstall as root and off you go.

It's easy enough that the only technical knowledge you need to get up and running is how to use cfdisk, and there's lots of uncomplicated tutorials to be found on how to create swap and install partitions.

    Want to upgrade apps?
    apt-get upgrade.
    ta da!

Want to set up a web server with php and mysql to do some web design testing? It's already there. Just look in the distro or on the relevant web sites for the docs.

Knoppix is a great learning linux, and being able to start the distro solely from CD gives a newbie the chance to become familiar with it before they commit to a HD install. Until they're ready they can always save their settings to the location of their choice.

I'm no Linux guru, or fanatical advocate either. I just like what I see.

Postscript: Any time I travel in the future, one of these CDs will be coming with me. If I need to check my bank account info or other sensitive data you can bet I'm not doing it from an untrustworthy OS on someone elses machine. No worries of infection with keyloggers or whatever this way :)

  2. new to online? on Good Online FPS Games/Servers For Beginners? · · Score: 1

It doesn't really matter if you're new to online gaming or just to specific titles. There is a learning curve that embraces not only the game but interacting with the community that plays that game.

Some servers will have friendly people that don't mind if you're new and make mistakes. Others will be full of loudmouths who won't cut you any slack. Ignore them. :)

I found with America's Army that if you say you're new, and learning the ropes in a level, that people will generally accept mistakes if you listen to and learn from the advice they offer. With a team game, a smart player knows they have nothing to gain from ripping up a newbie teammate. The more they can help you become an effective player, the better it is for the team. And with a good team around you it doesn't take long to learn the ins and outs of a new level.

If it's deathmatch, just have fun. Run around learning the level for the first few rounds. Don't worry about racking up a huge frag count. If you can practice offline and learn the gameplay that way so much the better.

Whether you buy the game 6 months or 6 hours after it comes out, there will be people on the server who are going to be better than you. Don't worry about it. Have fun, treat others with respect, and you'll find that you'll start to recognize the names of other players that are fun to play with or against.

And don't let cheaters get you all worked up. Eventually they get bored and bugger off. The cheating mentality also seems to have a very short attention span, provided you don't entertain them by freaking out on them :)

    Have fun.

Look at the number of people killed by sharks each year. It's such a small number compared to the amount of people who enter the water. Pigs kill more people every year than sharks do. But which looks more dramatic on the news? A huge shark swimming toward a camera, or a pig eating slop in a stall?

From what we see in the news of Detroit each night, there's nothing but shootings and robberies. But I bet there's lots of residents there who haven't been shot at or robbed in their lifetime.

Let's compare this situation to a bar? I haven't been to a bar yet that didn't have at least one person threaten or assault another while I was there. (This includes minor incidences like spitting or shoving, or having to be dragged out by bouncers).

So then by the reasoning of these laws all bars should be equipped with cameras inside and outside.

Drug deals also happen in bar bathrooms. Let's put cameras in the bathrooms.

It's just silly when there's a media reaction to events, they create this fantastical link between this new "menace", and then laws are rushed into place to deal with it.

    replaced it with:

a Samsung TXM3096WHF. Sure it was smaller, but I had no interest in getting another projection TV. Less than a year later the tube in this one is showing a green hotspot on the right side.
