I don't know where you went, but if you come into my apple store (won't say which), we have _tons_ of extra keyboards. We'll just pop off those letters and give you other ones from the spares we have. Won't be new, but will look new.
OK fine, let's limit it to an area. Let's limit it to San Francisco. Modern, beautiful city, one of the nicest around, with the most amount of tech-savvy people. I still loose calls while driving around. Sure you could argue that the hills (lots of ups and downs) is hard to cover, but come on!
The iPod was slimer, used a li-poly battery (instead of lithium-ion, resulting in many upset users) and the "click-wheel" technology, rather than traditional buttons.
Actually, the original iPod had a spinning wheel with buttons around it. The click-wheel didn't show up till the 4th generation of iPods. The solid state wheel (with buttons around it) happened on the second generation.
I don't know diddly about Apple. Can someone tell me how upgradable the typical Mac is? If I want to uprade the memory, cpu, hard drives, optical drives, gfx, etc., how easy is it to do this, and what's the longevity of the parts? How do prices compare between Apple and PC for these parts?
On the iMacs and Mac Minis you can change the hard drive, ram, etc. Additionally now with the socketed CPUs, you could in fact change that out as well (you'd have to consider cooling of a hotter chip though, since it wasn't originally in the spec).
On the Towers you can add and change graphic cards, etc. There are in general less graphic cards for the mac and they tend to be a bit more expensive though.
If you actually can say "I refuse to create art unless I am paid X dollars", I don't want your "Art"
If you say "I want to create the art regardless of pay rate, or being paid at all"
You sir are completely full of it. Why is it that when people think "Artist" they think "Starving Bohemian in need of a job"?
As a painter I get this all the time: "Hey I'll give you $50 if you make me a portrait". NO. My time is worth much more than that, my paint, my canvases, my years of working at this, college, etc. If you want a portrait it's going to cost you a fair and reasonable amount for the work being done (typically 40-60 hours).
"You're at home, babysit my kids". No, I'm painting. I'm working. Just because I don't go to an office doesn't mean I'm not a professional.
If your boss asked you "hey, I want to hire an engineer, but I want one that doesn't care if he gets money at all, because that'll be an engineer that loves his work!" I'd hope you'd tell him to go to hell. Just like I will now: go to hell.
This seems to be the big gun that people throw out "Apple doesn't want to deal with all the support issues". Well, they deal with support issues now don't they? What would they need, a bigger staff?
Support is handled by the AppleCare division. AppleCare is paid for on hardware when you get AppleCare with your computer. AppleCare actually loses money (although most people won't believe this seeing how much it is on some of the machines). The overhead of running a call center is huge; to be totally fair they're also paying for all replacement parts.
So if they're losing money charging $350 for applecare on a MacBook Pro (a lot less on the minis and iMacs, around $150). How are they going to make that all back on the few geeks that actually go out and purchase a $120 copy of Tiger?
Piracy is rampant, if anyone really thinks that they'll make _any_ significant amount of money off the sale of Mac OS X for generic PCs, I have a bridge to sell ya.
Now that we have science to repudiate the errors of evolution, we are able to determine that protein rich non-animal foods are far more healthy than protein rich meats.
Reference? I call bullshit on that. I won't say that protein rich meats are healthier than non-animal sources, because there's evidence both ways. In fact Tofu and Soy have several documented adverse effects. Obviously meat products high in saturated fat are not desirable either; but there's chicken and fish; fish being high in Omega-3 fatty acids (which most people don't get a lot of).
You surely can't deny that our culture has become more glutonous and obese BECAUSE of processed foods and meats served at fast food restaurants.
I completely agree with you, but notice that pure sources of meat (chicken, fish, meat) are rarely processed (I'm not going to go into antibiotics and the other stuff in meats, or franken foods like McD); what is processed is usually carbohydrate based foods; most of the time to reduce fat.
You have to realize that diet is much more complex than what you're trying to simplify here.
* Meats are good. Better to eat meats low in saturated fat like fish and chicken. * Vegetables are good as well; great source of anti-oxidants, vitamins, etc. * Saturated fats in general are to be minimized (notice that I don't say avoided), but you want a healthy intake of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs). See here and here. Also fat plays an important role in the feeling of being satiated or full.
The key is moderation, you don't want to eat only vegetables (you'll be missing many important nutrients like certain vitamins and protein). You don't want to eat only meat.
What evidence do you have that you can get 25 to life for stealing chewing gum? If you mean armed robbery/assault/etc. I'd agree with you, but for petty theft? Reference? If not I call bullshit on this.
Why do mods even mod this up? Because it sounds crazy enough to be true?
Or, would I buy something as critical as an operating system
Ya imagine that, my computer might not let me check my email! oh no! Seriously, we're talking about fighter planes, don't really think it's as critical as your home PC. Servers though...
Sit down and listen: Improvement in Microsoft Windows, or in any major operating system, will translate to benefits for everyone. The same way Apple is Microsofts R&D lab (or so it would seem) any improvements in Windows will make it to the mac. How do you think Mac OS X got fast user switching?
After 90 days, no telephone support. If you post into the web forums about a problem Apple doesn't like to "discuss", expect it to be silently removed.
You can call after the 90 days, but you pay per incident. If you get AppleCare, your support and warranty extend for 3 years.
As a friend discovered, Apple's return policy is 14 days AFTER DATE OF SHIPMENT, not DATE OF RECIEPT, despite this being VERY clearly outlined on their store policies page.
This makes no sense. I would've called again and talked to someone else.
You know that friendly bit about upgrading existing orders? Guess why she wanted to return her iBook? Answer: they started shipping iBooks with better processors and GPUs (or more VRAM, I forget) while her iBook was in transit. Her order certainly wasn't held or upgraded for free.
If her order was already in transit, what can you expect apple to do? You still have 14 days to get a price adjustment at the very least.
No reserving a spot via the web for the 'genius bar' unless you're a ProCare customer.
False. Anyone can make a same day appointment to the genius bar. ProCare customers can make appointments up to one week in advance. Go here and click on the store.
Parts are not available. Period. End of discussion. Unless you're an authorized reseller, which has a laundry list of requirements.
This is an apple philosophy. Apple when repairing a machine, will replace _everything that needs replacing_, and make sure to give you back the machine in perfect condition. The only people that can work on machines without voiding warranty are apple authorized service centers. There are plenty, probably many in your area. Take a look here.
Although I don't agree with everything they do (I have plenty of stories), I think they try to stay consistent to their ideals. In general people will bend over backwards to please the customer; or so has been my experience.

As a full-time Linux user who has had to attempt to fix a Windows box, I can say that not having those messages is way more inconvenient for the technician than having them is inconvenient for the user. Users can just ignore them, after all
Or you can do it like Mac OS X: if you want to see the full messages, you press a few keys on bootup.
...an opponent of "intellectual property" (he never patented any of his inventions)
Ya it's a wonder that men born in 1706 never filed a patent before congress approved patents around 1790. This also checks out by looking at the oldest scanned patents on the uspto website.
I know you're against DRM (I am too). There are enough reasons to argue against its use without making things up.
It would have a "C drive" that is basically a file on the Mac OS X filesystem.
It needs to be a folder, that way you could share files from the Mac OS side easily. You could also do some scripting and other fun if the environment provided for it (imagine a vmware that's applescriptable).
Yes, Apple has such an anti-Microsoft streak that they force a Microsoft employee to share the stage with Steve Jobs at his MacWorld keynotes
Did you actually see the keynote? I don't know what made me want to kill myself more, her whiny voice, the fact that she's completely clueless or when she mentioned messenger getting updated. Same messenger that doesn't support half the features of it's Windows counterpart (actually it has less features than aMSN for that matter).

I have to agree with the parent. Price is not the issue; one of the best selling accessories for the iPod is the Bose SoundDock, which costs as much as the iPod.
The problem with this thing is that watching something with an eye-patch device, that looks dorky, has a mess of wires, etc. makes absolutely no sense. Have you been to the eye doctor and had to cover one eye while reading a chart? uncomfortable huh.
This thing is dumb. Make it sexy, make it both eyes, make it cool looking, you can sell it for 600 bucks no problem.
And there were still fairly large lines. It wasn't that there were a ton of people there.. the transactions were slow because the cashiers had to explain the email service, then type in the email (if applicable), etc.
Can't mention numbers, but ya there _was_ a ton of people there. We sold ridiculous amounts of iPods daily.
Explaining the email service isn't rocket science: "Are you going to pay with a card? Do you mind getting your receipt by email?" If either of those was no, you send them to the normal cashier. It isn't rocket science.
In the apple store they will only ask you for ID for Credit Card transactions. No ID no sale. We're not exactly falling over ourselves to sell one more (potentially fraudulent) iPod.
Actually the smaller stores are just as booked (less repair people). Be prepared to wait for an hour if you just drop in in _any_ store.
Easy way? Go to apple.com/retail and make yourself an appointment for later that day. You know you're going to stop by the store anyway, make it painless.

There's another one of these machines in the basement of Macy's, right next to the food court.

First go to Settings > Shuffle: Songs. Then choose your genre, artist, playlist, etc. It will now only shuffle that specific criteria. Your Welcome.
