I fail to understand why manufacturers keep making products like this using SD cards. They are smaller, yes, but not by much. Would make much more sense to use CompactFlash so you can at least toss in a 2 or 4GB microdrive card. I can understand SD for a still picture camera, but not for a video camera!

And where are the hard disk cameras? Or should I say, AFFORDABLE hard disk based cameras?

  6. Python a scripting language? on Searching for the Best Scripting Language · · Score: 1

I don't really consider Python a "scripting language". Just because something is easy to use and interpreted doesn't make it useful for scripting. For that purpose you really need something very loose and non-structured. I am a big advocate of Python in the workplace and I have written huge object oriented systems using it. I don't think that's a task most "scripting" languages are up to.

BTW WTF is a scripting language anyway? Can anyone really solidly define what one is? By some of the definitions I have heard, just about every language could be a "scripting language" for someone.

  9. Better safe than sorry on Patching Paranoia - How Fast Do You Patch? · · Score: 1

Best to patch immediately, especially if you are running a server.

For clients, it really depends on the severity of the exploit. If the virus is something that comes through email and attacks other machines then you better patch right away or else risk a network-wide infection.

Otherwise I usually leave client machines to update themselves at night. If you have a decent firewall then there is no reason to go crazy over something that only comes in through an open port. It is important to patch ASAP but I won't lose any sleep over it in this situation.

  17. How ridiculous... on Clear Hard Drive Mods · · Score: 5, Insightful

Am I the only one who thinks this is an incredibly stupid thing to do? Considering that these drives are put together under strict clean-room conditions, wouldn't it be rather foolish to open one up in your basement or garage? Also, note the use of a DREMEL tool on the case cover... just what I want to be doing to a cover for a hard drive that contains multiple high speed platters: spewing little bits of metal dust all about the place.

No matter how well you vacuum this off, undoubtedly there will be debris remaining somewhere. Now imagine what those platters will look like after a few days at 7200RPM with the little bits of metal dust. This is the dumbest idea for a case mod I've seen yet. A joke perhaps?

Ok so we flood the market with low cost DVD players that do all kinds of nifty stuff, game consoles like PS2 that play DVD, and computer DVD drives.

Now I have a great idea... release a new product without any of the features that appeal to owners of DVD players and charge $2000 for it? That will work right?

I don't understand the logic here. With DVD recorders hitting the consumer market this year how will these DVHS players be successful? Any wise consumer should be able to tell that this is clearly a device that has been in R&D too long and is being pushed to market just for the sake of doing so. Buying one of these things would be really foolish (and expensive).
