Cite W3C standards. Considering your client is a government one I would imagine that standards compliancy is of the uppermost importance. I work as a web developer in the UK and a couple of our clients are goverment bodies. They have in place the reqirement to adhere to standards such as W3C and bobby compliancy and accessibility such as screen readers etc. If we were to produce an IE only web application the chances are it would fail on all those points.
Personally I think that the cases as I have outlined above are paramount for your situation. You need to point out the reasons why what they are doing is not the best idea. If you are working for a government organisation it is your duty to think about everyone no matter what operating system or browser thet are using.
If your application is rendered useless to anyone (within reason) then you are doing the wrong thing. Regardless of what technologies you are using it would be wrong for a governmental institution to do this.
I wonder how OSX for x86 might actually benefit linux. Might this open up the possibilities of using device drivers intended for OSX intel under linux via some sort of wrapper? conversely does this open up the possibility of running OSX applications under linux via an equivalent "WINE" type project - perhaps with some sort of darwin runtime layer?
Anyone care to comment on what kinds of symbiotic benefits this might bring?
Im not sure he was suggesting that it does. I think the poster was highlighting the possibility. Especially when you consider projects like wine and darwine.
I never dared voice my exact same opinion as yours for fear of negative modding or being seen as flamebait.
But I too second your comment and I've made my decision as to which console I'll be purchasing this time around and like before it wont be microsoft's offering.
If you are going to be purchasing any proprietary lock-in software. To budget in for the enevitable operating system upgrades and office upgrades. Then of course there are the AV software subscriptions and so forth.
Do careful planning and always have a back-up plan. What happens if the vendor you bought software product X from goes bust - what happens to your support?
thanks for the reply! but it is still based on assumptions regarding next generation hardware about which neither you nor i are in a position to compare sine the hardware is not available currently for comparison.
Piracy is illegal by definition. Why make a specific law regarding P2P? piracy is illegal whatever method is used. Why should one form of piracy be worse than any other?
I know I've personally tried to convince myself to go back to windows a few times, but in my case it never works
Same here, oh i used it for a couple of years after my Amiga couldnt cut it but when i came across linux a about 5 or 6 yrs ago within a few months I began using it exclusively. Whenever I have the misfortune to go near a windows box. The experience seems unfamiliar, restrictive and I have a general mistrust of any messages or dialogs i need to interact with.
I dont think i could ever go back because the world of freedoms and flexibility that linux offers is so great that anything less feels like being force-fed in a prison cell.
As much as i despise microsoft and avoid using windows at whatever cost. They have not released Vista to end users yet. The purpose of a beta is to find out what the problems and issues are and resolve them. Wait until they release a final before criticising I am sure there will be plenty of viruses and bugs to get excited about then! (How else are they going to continue shipping their AV software ?)
Your comment is irrelevant. The thread is about XBox360 which is not in the shops yet, neither is the PS3. How you can comment on whether one or the other based on your questionable knowledge of the current generation of consoles is beyond me. For all you know PS3 may well have faster loading times than 360 "if not better same with graphics" as you so eloquently put it.
I've seen enough JPG compression artefacts in my time to know that these are not them.
Aside from the fact that the image resolution and size being so huge. The size shape , orientation and localisation of the artefacts would suggest that JPG artefacts not to be the case. In actual fact I think its quite clear that you are making a statement regarding a topic that you know little about. Next time keep your mouth shut or comment on something which you actually have some knowledge!
Did you actually attempt the transforms i suggested on the image?... didnt think so.

Indeed, these are very interesting. At first i thought they might be an artifact of the camera or something but after some minor investigation.
Im pretty sure those are there in the physical sense. Try loading the hi-res overhead shot into gimp or whatever your favorite gfx proggy might be. Invert the colors on it (turns the water black) and then using the brightness and contrast adjustments you can really bring out the shapes. What is particularly interesting is that on the topleft corner of the ice are what can only be described as oblong crystaline structures. The green tendrils (when processed reveal regions that look very fractilious in nature. Wheras around the top and right side the edges seem to be pockmarked splodges showing the kind of distribution one might expect of bacteria on an agar plate.
here's a pic (you'll get better resolution if you experiment on the larger image)
You Americans (its happening in the UK too) are so unfortunate- you think your living in a democracy but really your country is taking them all away. If it carries on like this you will end up living in a country with just as many ridiculous laws, rules and regulations as some of the countries in the middle east your president is trying to change. Soon it will be illegal to let your women on the streets -and your TV and Video games will be illegal unless they have be molly-coddled by the government. Good luck in this world because it going to get worse before it gets better and the terrorists are winning. Us brits are killing innocent people because of the fear they have created they are way more successful at changing politics than we can ever forcefully be.
Maybe right, GCC is used heavily in embedded systems - and for hardware development. Think mobile phones, TiVo's , Games Consoles (not just PSX) I know people who use GCC to build things for XBox - Its used a lot in R&D too! GCC also comes in very handy when you are building for different Operating systems or architectures.
Microsoft should be urging developers to follow standards, so long as people adhere to accepted guidlines such as those laid out by w3c consortium people *will* be prepping themselves for IE7. That is of course unless Microsoft are planning to ignore them and produce another browser that has a crapped out implementation of the DOM with added non-standard extensions.
Nearly *all* the web developers I know that are worth their weight curse regularly at the bag of bile that is IE. Firefox is just a better browser , plain and simple. Just what does IE offer (that is not a proprietary IE only extension) that is going to change things for the better?
(Is there some mojo still left in the unholy alliance with Microsoft that still compels IBM to keep the source proprietary, even to the grave?)
Not neccesarily an alliance - but if someone else owns parts of the source code that IBM licensed from a third paty they might have to remove any proprietary stuff before they can do this,.

Certainly "Darwine" just got a big helping hand
Nick
neither was his post. It was concerned with windows compatibility which is not quite the same thing.

its seems crazy to me to remove the security hole from one, yet include it on the server where the maximum disruption is likely to be caused.

Urm ... I thought the whole point of a video game console was to play video games.

No surprises for guessing which industry will be the first to adopt these.
Fix it quickly - patch the hole. dont tell anyone, and hope to god your boss doesnt find out! ;)

Vista : A distant view or prospect,.....

Obviously its a long way off then; not that i really care anyhow as i havent used windows for many years.
What processor will be powering them - considering intel based mac's are on the horizon ; How is this going to affect the up take?
Nick...
I'm not going to let a company refuse to sell me something because they don't like my choice of computer.
I have a different logic; If a company doesnt like my choice of computer then they just lost a customer.
