  1. Wow ... (not!) on Windows Longhorn Beta Screenshots · · Score: 1

Considering this is a "beta" - I can wholeheartedly say this is nothing impressive. Its already looking "so last year" and it isnt even out to retail yet - its hardly the DOOM3 of desktop engines. Certainly not going to be switching back to M$ on the strength of those screens!

  2. Re:Spyware/Adware on Google to Release Firefox Toolbar · · Score: 1

Of course they could ! but the same can be said for many open source projects. That said, I havent seen a spyware infested version of firefox yet. Open Source is supposed to protect against this kind of thing from happening - having the ability to evaluate the source code kinda makes it difficult to hide things!

IHMO ReactOS is cool and all - but if it ever does reach a high enough level of compatibility to replace the OS it is trying to be we can also expect other OS'es to benefit via the WINE project, as I understand it they share a lot of core code.

  4. Harken to the days of old! on A Review of the 128KB Macintosh · · Score: 2, Insightful

"the Macintosh design team crammed an unbelievable amount of power into the 64K bytes of ROM in the form of tightly written, highly optimized machine code. In doing so, the team provided standard user interfaces, so that most application programs on the Mac will be used in similar forms."
While certainly not just applying to the Mac's of yore. What happened to those days where the true art of bare metal programming was the pinnacle of geekdom? Just think how much faster and efficient todays software would be if we applied this philosophy to programming.
Of course things are more complex and hardware considerably more variable in these days of Open Source , cross - platform development etc. Wouldnt it be nice if we at least tried a little harder to avoid the bloat - just because machines get more powerful it doesnt mean you should let your code slip ... does it ?

  17. Vidalinux... on Graphical Gentoo Installer In The Works · · Score: 1

If anyone is interested in getting Gentoo up and running on a box quickly using a graphical installer, maybe you are just frightened by the stock method of installing gentoo. If you are not bothered about tweaking the config files for uber optimisation they provide pre compiled/ optimised versions for different processor AMD or Intel etc.

The main install is made from binaries with a good selection of packages and the benefits of portage. If you so desire you can change your config files for optimisation after the installation and compile from source whatever you need afterwards. Its also great if you want to run gentoo on an older machine and dont have six months to go through the bootstrap / compile shebang. Im running with KDE 3.4 an old T22 with all the candy and trimmings i could possibly want. I cant reccommend it highly enough.
