I bought an 867 mhz Powerbook 9 days ago! I thought that since the new Powerbook line just came out there would be no cool new toys announced at MW. Also, weren't they supposed to stop doing this - annoucning all the cool things at MW?
Damn you. I can't afford to keep up with Apple.
17 inches....*sob*
(Sorry if there is poor spelling....hard to type and weep at the same time).
I bought a Powerbook G4 and got a second battery. I can watch three movies. I get about 7.5 hours of battery life - supposedly the powerbook can get up to ten hours off of two batteries.
Unfortunately the Powerbook is not cheap. It does have the advantage of the wide screen LCD (the best screen for watching DVDs - they display larger than any other laptop screen).
If cost is an issue (and usually is these days) I would recommend an iBook with an extra battery and 12.1 inch screen. It's a tough laptop and can take quite a beating - good for travelling. It's not much more expensive than a portable DVD player ($1500 verus $900 CDN) and you get a good laptop out of the deal.
It is a tired example I'll agree but you can't flat out say "Oh this new fangled technology will never catch on".
The horseless carriage was laughed at when it came out. Completely useless. It also cost a fortune to run. No one would use it. After many revisions we get the car that we use today.
Many times throughout history new technology has come along and people laughed at it. Said it was uesless to 99.9% of the population. Many times it is. In other cases it's not.
I'm not a fan of the Segway myself but I do see how it may be useful. The way it balances itself is quite neat - quite possibly something that would be useful to use in robots.
Great arguement. You're right who would want to have a powered mode of transportation over the good old fashioned bicycle.
Now, please re-read your arguement and make the following subsitutions:
bike -> horse
Segway -> car (You may wish to ignore the bit of getting sweaty on the horse...)
Your arguement is not new. It's been said and lost before.
100 hoops? 1) Visit website 2) Signup as a developer (I had already done this for the DC newsletter). 3) Email Canadian reseller (for Canadian - you US folks can do it all online). 4) They give you password to the price list. 5) Tell them what you want to order. 6) Save $800Cdn (bought some extra things) and have your new laptop next business day ($10 shipping fee added to cost of laptop - yes ten dollars).
That's 6 hoops for $800. That's a lot of money for a student.
It wasn't a difficult process. The Canadian reseller company (EMJ) was quite good to deal with - actually more polite than dealing with BMac (the best Apple store we have in my area).
The 10-20% that you save on all Apple products through this program is most often 20%. I got a second battery for my laptop for $88(Cdn) and they are $194 new or $150 with a new laptop.
I just got the 867 MHz laptop myself and I'd like to take this opportunity to point out a great savings that many students can get (it's been pointed out here before but I don't like people wasting money for no good reason).
If you are a student in a program that deals with hardware developement (it's one of the requirements but I can't see how they check it) you can save 20% off of these system once in your life time. As you have to do is purchase a $99 (US) membership to save a good deal of money.
I get NO spam on my hotmail account and I've had it for over 3 years now. Of course, every address that as the '@' symbol in it are automatically thrown into the trash.
Actually, I'm a person that dropped Windows and games for Linux and the console. I use to have my main system as a windows system - I play Jedi Knight II, Half-life, Quake 3 and the such. I got bored of them. I now use my computer only for Internet and work - not a single game gets played.
I do still play games though. I play them on a PSX (I prefer my games in two dimensions). I play RPGs when alone, have a long time rival of Super Street Fighter 3 Alpha with a friend (always play it when he's over) and load up the DDR pad or puzzle fighter when there is a group over.
The PC just can't compete with the console when it comes to using a system just for REAL multiplayer fun. Real multiplayer meaning having a couple friends in the same room having a social time outside of the game itself.

Actually, used underwear can be found in vending machines in Japan. Here is one page that mentions it. Search google and you'll find more references. I heard on a television program that they are as cheap as $7 US. Not sure if that's a good price or not - never been in the used underwear market myself.
*sigh* Lawn darts....I remeber having to get a ladder to take a lawn dart out of the side panelling of my neighbours house (father was not pleased). I can't see why they were banned....;-)

A nice computer for Christmas...? Nice.
Are you interested in adopting a 21 year old Comp. Eng. student who could really use presents like this for Christmas?
Not from what I've seen. There are just laws that try to make things more difficult for law-abiding citizens.
Piracy has not be slowed down. The only thing that has been slowed down is the productivity of those who choose not to pirate. In many cases - using a crack version of a piece of software (or ripped CD) is less of a hassle.
One would think that CleverNickName has seen enough Star Trek items like this. Kind of surprising he'd be out looking for this stuff.
On a related note, the orginal models - are there any still around (that haven't been blown up). IIRC the models used for TNG were 6 feet long (I could be way off).
A Sim Natalie Portman in a Slashdot like community?
I think not. There may be a Sim Natalie Portman Shrine but if there was a Sim Natalie Portman then it would not be like Slashdot. It may have a Sim Wesley Crusher though if that helps.
...if I recall correctly, IBM is an American company. Although I haven't read it (it's on the list of books I have to read) this book deals with the assistance that the 3rd Reich got from IBM.
JonKatz is still with Slashdot? Wow.
I totatlly forgot about him since I've had my account set up for the past month to ignore any article posted by him.
I find Slashdot much better this way. I thought he would have left Slashdot by now.
True - it's my fault but I didn't think that they'd update the PowerBook line so quickly after updating the line just a couple months ago.
ARGH!

iLife the new package of iTunes 3, iMovie 3, iDVD 3 and iPhoto sells for $49.95. This could be the upgrade that the rumour was about.
