I've got Lindows on one of my systems here at home. Being sheltered in the shadow of Redmond for most of my life, I grew up on Windows machines and the feel of Lindows allowed me to move into a Linux based system without much effort. I watched as a friend pulled his hair out for three days while trying to get his Linux install working. His wife wanted to email her mom, the kid was fussing about not being able to play his games (6 years old) He was determined to make it work, but being a Windows person for years he was in the same boat as I, some things just didn't make sense. When I told him I did the whole install of Lindows in 17 minutes and was surfing the net on it, that was all it took to get him to go for it. It took longer to download than it did to install.

The way I describe it, Lindows is Linux for Windows users.

When a lot of people don't realize is that the indepents are in the situation they are in because of the RIAA labels. The control the distrbution, the airplay (through payola), they control the gold records, (it took 5 years after John Denver's death for an accounting which award him 19 more gold records, kinda makes you wonder if he was paid for those)

  17. Connections and splices and transformers, Oh My! on Broadband over Powerlines · · Score: 2, Interesting

The trouble with broadband over power lines is that power systems were not intended for data transmission. While the cables may work ok everything else is quite likely to cause problems: the splices from repairs, the shunts, the transformers. I doubt that adequate records were kept just in case the power system was going to be used for broadband in the future, so repeated trips by techs might be necessary, just to get it to work.

It would probably be cheaper to just run fiber along the distribution lines, which is what some power companies have done.

Look at what happened when the telephone companies went to DSL, in some places they had to redo 20 years of repairs that were adequate for phone lines, but not for high speed data. It cost a them a fortune and it is almost a certainty that the power companies would be faced with the same situation if not worse.

In addition they are proposing an immigration tax on all people coming into the United States as they obviously are coming here where file sharing is unregulated as in China where file sharing is controlled by a simple 9mm solution. The tax would apply retroactively to all citizens of the US, raising approx. 42 billion dollars.

My firm is lead counsel for the private plaintiffs in the Compact Disc Minimum Advertised Price Antitrust Litigation which is currently pending in the United States District Court for the District of Maine. We have prosecuted this litigation along with Attorneys General from more than 40 states. As a result of the proposed settlement of the litigation, a web site www.musiccdsettlement.com has been established to provide detailed information about the settlement and allow purchasers of CD's during the period January 1, 1995 through December 22, 2000 to file claims to receive proceeds from the Settlement Fund. Under the terms of the proposed settlement, should the settlement be approved, persons filing timely and valid claims will receive a payment of between $5.00 and $20.00, provided that the number of persons filing claims does not result in the payment amount falling below $5.00. I have been made aware of your recent posting and would like to correct certain misinformation it contains. Contrary to your assertion, privacy and security issues are addressed on the web site. Question 12 of the Q&A section on the site reads:

12.Will the information I provide on my claim form be kept confidential? Yes. The information you provide on your claim form will be kept confidential and secure, and will be used only to determine your award under this Settlement. It will not be sold to any business for marketing purposes, or shared with anyone not a party to this litigation.

Further, there is a Verisign logo on the claim form that if clicked provides detailed security information. The need for the personal information we have requested on the claim form (including the last 4 digits of social security numbers) is quite clear. We have to protect against duplicate and/or fraudulent claims. The suggestion that we would sell the database of this information should the amount of claims result in payments below $5.00 is just plain wrong and, in any case, would never be permitted by the Court overseeing the settlement. Your proposal to file several test claims is precisely the type of conduct that endangers the claims process. I would also like to note that in response to questions about the web site both the media (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21 176-2003Jan7.html ) and investigatory sites such as Snopes.com ( http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/nothing/cdrefund.asp ) have concluded that the process is legitimate. I hope this answers concerns about the web site.
