One simple fix- block outgoing 25 to all but the ISP's mail servers and see who, if any, complains.
These are home accounts, they shouldnt need external mail servers for *sending* mail. Yes, someone will probably complain and say they have a server at home which sends their email, thankyouverymuch, but I think a few people running servers on their home internet accounts is a good sacrifice for cutting spam..
I don't think he's discrediting you, he's just making the point that a general mac user (ie, someone who truly believes in the Just Works thing) would expect there to be a GUI option, and would die from shock messing about with CLIs! You've both got very valid points, but for different groups of people, you'll have to agree to disagree:)
I'm borderline on recommending a mac to my parents as their next machine, and I certainly wouldnt tell them to go and start typing stuff in to get extra features - I'd do that for them!
I agree about the contracts though, all networks over here (apart from the pay as you go ones, of course) have 1 year minimum terms. TMobile goes 18 months, which seems ridiculous to me as their offers seem to consistantly be the worst!
The cancellation charges I can understand though.. The networks heavily subsidise the handsets! Have you ever tried buying a phone without a contract? Ouch.. Motorola V3 Razr as an example - free on O2 200 contract (£~35/month) or you can buy the phone on its own for ~£400 and still have to arrange a contract on top of that!
The one nice thing they let us do over here though, is that after a year, we can upgrade our handset, in return for committing to another year on the same network. If you got a good phone in the first place, take the best cheap phone theyre offering and whack it out on ebay! Great stuff:D
Theres always rumours and talks about DoCoMo looking for european partners, but nothing ever seems to come about:(
Thats quite a good idea actually, although I'd guess it's almost certainly unenforcable.. Any lawyers about?!
The maths one might work, but would probably get you a reputation as a bit of a wierdo:)

Oop, I should add - if you junk the standard phones and get SIP phones instead (i know, i know, cost!), you can have as many as you like and you save because theyre ethernet, rather than pots - you dont need the FXS card in the asterisk box!
Yeah, but possessing drugs is also illegal. Possessing music isn't. Yet.
This months Edge has a fact that the Japanese "teeny boppers" control fads out there..
If 5% of them buy it, then another 60% will within a month, or something to that effect!
Don't know where you are, presumably US, so neener neener! ;)
Sounds like a new Slashdot meme in the making to me!
Hurrah! Continuing in the past Sony successes..
PS2, hardware died early
PSP, crappy button and dead pixels
PS3, TBA
Well, maybe.. I'd certainly agree that the users should be cut off, but a monetary fine would be a step too far, I guess.
Why on earth would you want to??

Yes. Just because the users ARE stupid, doesnt mean they should be allowed to BE stupid.
Try walking around town with a ghetto blaster playing some obscene music and see how quickly the police/someone from the public try to shut you up.
Yeah, but Microsoft patented it first!
What changed in your mind that it was a bad practice? If they truly were GOOD products, whats the problem?
The only reason I can think of if theres an even better AND cheaper alternative??
whoa whoa, chill! :)

I hear what you're saying... and it sounds like "buzzword, buzzword, buzzword, buzzword, buzzword, buzzword"
Okay, seriously, enough. Give up. People arent visiting the site anymore, look at the number of comments.. 200+, 160, 90, 30, none.
Lets have some regular slashdot news now, yeah?
Because tomorrow we get them all over again :(
If theyre gonna post and post again, it may as well be news, old or new!
DO **NOT** install this service pack on SBS03!!
:)
It will screw up the server beyond belief!
SBS 2003 SP1 will be coming out "within 60 days" and will include ISA 2004 for SBS Premium customers.
Just wait
In other, equally interesting news, The Mad Poster hates taxes.
Oh, you dont know who he is? Well, nevermind, it's news!
Except Top Gear is back, and has been for some time, on BBC2
It seems Slashdot will soon owe royalties to Amazon..
Wait.. They've patented a mirror??
Woah, thats a post and a half, heh :)
:D

You should learn to see through the marketing spiel :)
But, here's the cool part: In Japan (at least on Vodofone and DoCoMo and a few others) your INBOUND call is free.
America is the only place where receiving isn't free!
Everywhere in Europe I've been (I live in UK) the offers have all been receive for free, unless you're roaming onto another network.
