    there are GUI utilities just for these tasks however most normal people i.e. non slashdot crowd wouldn't know what the extension meant and for them extensions are turned off/not visible as they cause more headaches than they solve. Actually for them the old OS9 creator/type codes were much better. remember for the great majority of humans - ignorance is bliss.

    This only applies when you can get cheap labour i.e. a teenager that wants this job and has dropped out of school, these days they are all to good for that or at least smart enough to realise while still in school the parents are willing to pay the bills. In the caregiver scenario this would need to occur during school hours, limiting available workforce.

    My problem is that I must join the union in my industry and there is only one. Consider - If I could only by my product from one company it would be called a monopoly and likely be broken up. Also a company cannot interfere with another companies business except in fair competition, however a union can say don't work for them even if they pay great and treat you well, without repercussion. Additionally Union leaders are in it for themselves not the rank and file.

    The problem is the $43B when its not an urgent expense now and will still not make that much of a difference to real speeds. 70% of internet traffic in australia comes from overseas through what is essentially small pipes. Additionally the pace of technology change is such that wireless is a more desirable solution for consumers already. And from someone who has watched technology for at least 30 years, Get your upgrade when you absolutely need it as technology only gets Cheaper, Faster, Better.

    As a point of interest in my Sydney home I've had a optical fibre line ready to run since 1985, we found it when we added extra lines in 1995 (only needs final installation and connection) to date the only reason I haven't done this is the cost and charges quoted by Telstra (51% government owned formerly 100%) are ridiculous. Anyone who believes after we pay $43B for Gigabit fibre it will free or even cheap is smoking the funny stuff

    Actually this would be a simple algorithm based on producing combination and permutations easily translated into most computer languages. Add in samples from all known natural sound sources. When asked to print it out you will be able to (of course several planets of trees will go in the process, or be a little more clever and write a search routine that could play any section thus proving that any music currently written is merely replicating and synthesising the pure music of the universe - Mathematics

    Sorry, but I don't blame people for pirating $1,000 software because unless it's software that allows you to print money, NO program is worth that much.

    That is just rubbish why you may ask ?

    A programmer costs 100k per year on average (its not just wages there are taxes, equipment, rent for the space they take up, etc.) A simple scenario that programmer is contracted to write a program for a one-off client which takes a year to design, program and test. that software is worth the 100k at least!

    Not all software is $5 Shareware and not all software has mass market appeal.

I agree to the post below that it wasn't meant for you but if UI design is your specialty you should still "Get It" as you should be able to design for others not for yourself
