You can generate Word documents from OO.o, what the hell's your point?
My point is that Macromedia PUBLISHED information on the SWF format and supports to community using open-souce tools. It's not "open source", but it is less restrictive like Java. Saying that Macromedia is like Microsoft is incorrect in using proptiary formats and tools is incorrect. To quote, you said "They are desperately trying to be Microsoft by locking people into their file formats".
That would mean 1996 was your start, which means you STARTED after Myst was completed with QuickTime and HyperCard on a Quadra, at the same time Flash was crashing everyone's browser left and right.
No, I started using Director when Netscape was still in beta (actually, a little more then eight years ago). You just said, "Everything Director does can be done in QuickTime and was done in QuickTime BEFORE Director " --
First of all, Director is much older than Quicktime:
So Director was doing things many years before Quicktime. Sure, if you use quicktime with another authoring tool you can get the same results but if you say "quicktime better than director" you are comparing to very different things.
Everything Director does can be done in QuickTime and was done in QuickTime BEFORE Director came out, it's just that the Director tool is so good.
Being a multimedia developer for the past eight years I have to say you have no clue what you are talking about. I'm not sure if you are trying to troll or just plain don't know anything about Director. In the old days, video was saved in quicktime formats, placed on CD-ROM, and programs like Director were used to create the logic for games, or the menu systems if your CD-Rom was mostly video. Some of the best online games were created in Director because the programing language (Lingo) was very easy to learn, use, and was even object oriented. You could, and some people did, build a complete stand-alone application in Director. It's apples to oranges to compare quicktime to director.
Macromedia has an EXTREME case of non-invented-here that they have been fighting for YEARS
If you've been paying attention, Macromedia has been buying companies that produce possible cutting edge technologies. They bought Flash and Coldfusion. With Macromedia's help, these technologies have taken a foothold and gained more marketshare.
They are desperately trying to be Microsoft by locking people into their file formats, when they are late to market on abilities.
Last time I checked, SWF was an open format. You can generate SWF from most Adobe products. When Adobe tried to create a flash development tool it lacked good features. If Macromedia is so sluggish -- why isn't there a better flash development tool?
There is a big difference between Mossad and the CIA. The most informative book I've read on the subject is Gideons Spies Mossads Secret Warriors by Gordon Thomas. At times the two agencies work against each other or withhold information. For example:
* Mossad has successfully maintained an agent in the Clinton White House (and exploited the Monica Lewinsky scandal). * Mossad is thought to have withheld information on pre 9/11 terrorist attacks. * The book details other instances where Mossad has spied on the United States.
That's all I can remember, it's been awhile since I've read the book but if you think that the CIA = Mossad you are sadly mistaken. Mossad is an efficient, ruthless killing machine that won't hesitate to track down and assassinate it's enemies. The CIA is clueless and hasn't been able to track down our biggest threat (Bin Laden).
Given the economy and your work experience, I would highly recommend considering TRADE rather than a pay salary. First of all, you will get the ink you need on a resume but depending on the field you choose there can be plenty of perks. For example, I started working for a pornographic web site right after getting my degree from a prestigious school online. I was given a a square meal (as much love-box as I could eat) and a roof over my head (but keeping it involves more sleeping around than sleeping). Money can't buy everything... Well.. Unless you live in vegas. But money can't buy love because love means you can kiss on the lips too. You have to trade for that, and thats where you skills as a pornographic website operator come in handy.
You'd think they'd atleast pick out a new name. There's already the Griffin Technology PowerPod Auto Adapter for iPod. Obviously, Apple wouldn't use the same name for a future product.
I'd be interested to know how many MacOS users actually DON'T also use Windows as a second OS. How about a "slashdot challenge" to see how many user's can actually use their OS of choice (macos, linux, bsd etc) fulltime for a month without using windows.
It would be interesting to see who would put there time where there mouth is
I do contract work so I must adapt to whatever environment I'm in. I prefer Mac OS X and support Apple by buying stock and upgrading annually. I put my money where my mouth is. I also run Linux and Windows. I think there are bigger issues, like feeding your family, than trying to win your "slashdot challenge". Most of us are lucky to have jobs as it is -- limiting yourself is just stupid. In the end it's not the tool (OS) it's now well you use it. Being knowledgeable in a variety of systems makes you a stronger or more versatile programmer. So no, I'm not going to throw away my XBOX or switch banks because mine uses ATMs running windows or...
Not to piss on your parade but working in advertising I can tell you two things. First of all people can already track the response to an ad by increased sales. Popular ads create a buzz of their own on the streets and online. With the increasing number of internet users its much easier to have your "ear to the ground". I don't think advertisers would pay for this information unless they also got detailed demographics as well. Maybe that's what you were thinking about anyway but I'm sure there would be a stink about privacy concerns. Also consider that you don't have to LIKE an ad for it to be effective. It can be loud, unoriginal, but stick in your head. When they shout "buy one get one free", and sales increase 400%, companies view this as a success despite how ugly and horrible the ads are.
(Now the completely unrelated part) We should probably flog the people buying infomercial crap -- they are promoting tasteless design ethics. I went from broadcast to cable and switched to DirecTivo last year. I have a great home theater setup, but I stopped watching DTV too. Instead I rent Netflix. DirecTivo can give you a lot of quality programming but in the end the time is better spent on other things (girls, drinking, etc.). Eight hours of "must see tv" is too much even for me.
This is just an opinion but it seems like the war on terrorism isn't a problem, it's a solution. How so? Politicians use it to much their agenda in the name of the "solution". Re-elect Bush Jr for the war on terrorism! This software is part of the "solution". In truth, the war on terrorism is about effective as the war on drugs. Look at a country with real terrorist problems like Israel -- responding with force just leads to more bloodshed on both sides. Americans write Osama off as being a wacky insane loon but his version of truth isn't so different than ours. Until America wakes up and realizes why people hate us and DOES something about it we're going to lose the war on terrorism. We can't become allies to people one second, train and arm them, and then turn our backs on them when we get what we want. Maybe we need peace with terrorists instead of war against them.
1. Try taking Emergen-c, not only is it healthy, portable, and gives you a boost. My girlfriend is a waitress and instead of drinking massive amounts of coffee she drinks a few of these per night. 2. Break your habit, say you drink coffee, by drinking other less caffeinated drinks. I started drinking ginger teas and making my own blend of Chai -- these taste a LOT better then coffee and making your own saves on the pocketbook. 3. Take mental supplements, or so-called "smart drugs, such as Acetyl-L-Carnitine and Choline/Lecithin. Check out a copy of Smart Drugs and Nutrients from your local library and do some research.
I was a large coffee drinker, two tall cups a day, and then I tried these things but ended up switching to espresso. I feel less guilty but my plan to quit wasn't exactly a success. One thing I discovered is that when you are physically active in the morning it lessens the need for a caffeine boost. I started biking to work and having an espresso at 10 or 11. I still enjoy it but don't feel the same dependancy.
Speaking of the history of the H-Bomb, a great read on the subject is the mammoth Pulitzer Prize winning book The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes. He also wrote Deadly Feasts which I enjoyed even more.

I think velcro cable ties are a godsend for orginizing computer work space. Like some people mentioned, large plastic containers work well but go for the CLEAR ones so you can see what's in them before opening them up. You can then stack them in a closet or something. Usually I try to download manuals as PDF of save product web pages into a manuals folder, then I can toss the paper version. If I feel the item has high resale value I might save the manual and box in the basement. In the end, throwing as much as you can into the trash is probably your best bet for an organized space. From what I've heard pilots make very little when starting out as a pilot -- $20K in some cases. Fool.com has data on the salary range of pilots and $250K is on the high end. Some of them qualify for welfare! Michael Moore writes:
"That's right -- $15,000 for the person who has your life in his hands. Until recently, Continental Express paid a little over $13,000 a year. There was one guy, an American Eagle pilot , who had four kids so he went down to the welfare office and applied for food stamps -- and he was eligible! "Google Cache
If they hang in there and are lucky they might get a shot at the $250K. Besides, as you pointed out, people's lives are in their hands. It's worth paying them for quality work.
Have you watched the HBO series OZ? It's just fiction but gives a chilling look into prison life. After watching it you just have to wonder if some of that stuff REALLY goes on in some prisons. From the sound of her research it may be even worse.
Instead of placing a bounty on virus writers why don't they take that money and give it out as a bonus to employs who find bugs and distribute important security patches? Wouldn't you work harder for a quarter million dollar bonus? Prevention is the key and this move seems like an attempt to clean the mess up after the fact. They've said security is #1 but what internal changes in staffing and spending support this claim?
