This case will be a very important case for the IT industry. If Microsoft gets away with a slap on the wrist, they will continue their monopoly, Linux, BSD and other OSes that refuse to implement DRM in the kernel will be outlawed (in the US, at least) and other double-plus-ungood things. If, however, Microsoft are severely penalised, the IT industry is very likely to decline, as there is at the moment a large dependency on Microsoft in the IT industry. And there is no point denying it.
I am not trying to spread FUD, and I would like to see 1 Microsoft Way at the center of a small nuclear explosion, but we must acknowledge the severe repercussions this may have on the IT industry.
Right-click on My Computer, and choose Properties. On the Automatic Updates tab, choose to install updates manually. Apply and OK.
Right-click on My Computer and choose Manage. Browse to Services. Right-click on Automatic Updates and choose Stop. Right-click again and choose Properties. Set Startup Type to Disabled. Apply and OK.
You should have no further trouble. I'm not.
Chris
PS. If you then go into the system properties and look at the Automatic Updates tab, it will say that the Windows Update service is unavailable.:-)
You do b), but only when someone else attempts to get data through the pipe. Then you give them each 50%, 33.3%, 25%... bandwidth depending on how many different IP addresses are using the pipe.
That way Fred and co. can leech to his heart's content - while nobody else uses the pipe. But when Jim gets on, he'll get his fair share of the bandwidth. Meanwhile, Fred and co. are scratching their heads over the sudden dip in their netgraph...
That's not trolling, that's a fair cop. If you can't be bothered checking publically available hardware and software compatibility lists, then you can't blame Microsoft for _your_ mistake, much in the same way as how I didn't blame Mandrakesoft or the CUPS devteam when the version of CUPS included with Mandrake 8 didn't support my HP DeskJet 950C properly out of the box. Instead, I headed over to www.linuxprinting.org and downloaded a PPD for the driver that I wanted (the PCL one), loaded that up using Kups and it worked fine.
Correction: It is more like the car dealer selling you a car with holes in the airbags and then phoning you to say "Oops, all cars of our model have holes in the airbags. Come back to the dealership and we'll install replacements."
This is not only insufficient, it is criminal negligence.
>the battles are not too slow as long as you don't use summons (which are a waste of time anyway, limit breaks do much more damage).
I take it you never summoned Eden and boosted it up to 250. This will inflict on the close order of 60,000 damage. Yeah, the summon sequence takes forever, but Eden is a) the only GF that can be boosted to the max and b) the only party character that can do more than 9999 damage in a single hit. And I don't mind watching the summoning fx, although I'm usually more concerned with not buggering up the boost.
No, but it would let them 'rm -rf ~'. This is all a virus has to do to a user to bugger them up good and proper. They can still use all the apps, they just lost all the stuff they did with them.
And don't lecture me about backups, what about that top-priority email you got from a client 30 mins. after the backup was done and 30 minutes before that 'bugfix' from 'Admin'?
>it's running through some sort of emulation layer that is darn slow
Not quite. Cygwin is an implementation of the Un*x APIs in Windows. It is similar in function to wine, which is an implementation of the Win32 API in Un*x/x86.
What this basically means, AFAIK, is that cygwin 'runs' the un*x binaries by translating their function calls (Hey, OS, do this for me, will ya?) into something windows can run. (Ugga ugga ug ug. Ugga ug.) Yes, it is similar in function to an emulator, but an emulator typically pretends to be hardware, whereas cygwin and wine pretend to be software.
No, that's what the xSPCA is for. "That DNA-engineered computer can't be banned, it has to be treated properly! DNA computers have rights too, you know!"
If the poster of the parent comment sees this, will they please post more details to the discussion? Depending on the details, this could be an excellent example to include in an email to the DOJ address.

Eh?
Linux-Mandrake:
$ urpmi a_program (or use rpmdrake - GUI tool)
Debian:
$ apt-get a_program (or whatever Debian's GUI tool is)
Windows:
"Insert the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive, and wait for the setup program to appear on your screen. If the setup program does not appear, double-click on "My Computer", locate the icon for your CD-ROM drive and double-click on it, then double-click on the "Setup" application."
And note: all of the above are in the documentation. And the documentation should be read before an installation.
Yes, you *CAN* pay US$5/month to help them develop WineX, but their CVS system is public. And anonymous. I am currenty using WineX and I haven't subscribed. (Yet)
Plus, one of the advantages of CVS is that every time they release a.001 version change, you don't have to download the whole shebang again. Just the code changes.
Yeah, ditto, although I didn't subscribe - I downloaded it using CVS, compiled and installed that way. And it _still_ ran Half Life, Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction and Quake 3 Arena without a hitch. Except for the _snd_mixahead bug in half life (that's where there's a delay in the HL sound and the cvar _snd_mixahead gets ignored). Any fix for that?
Forget sunblock (or no more than usual), bring change for payphones. Mobile communications (yes, that may include wireless networks) will be hit *hard* by this. The aurorae will look good, tho.
Services which may be affected include:
* Mobile phones
* International internet connectivity (satellites will be incommunicado, oceanic cables only ppl)
* GPS and other forms of satellite navigation
* Any other technology that relies on electromagnetic radiation.

Quoting scary books? Which one? I didn't quote any scary books!

My very severe bad. I was in grave error. I retract my statements and stand in a corner.
I also apologise to everyone for the misinformation.

Remove the space from '...\Contr ol\...' and damn Slashcode.
Chris
Save this as a .reg file, then double click it. It *should* work. (Was exported tree, got cropped in Notepad)
n tr ol\Session Manager\Memory Management]
---Cut here---
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Co
"LargePageMinimum"=dword:ffffffff
---Cut here---
./configure --config-prefix=/etc/program_name/
YMMV and the option name may be different.

Yes. And now we're up to Stage III. It will be very interesting to see how the plot continues to unfold in the computing industry.
But if my guess is correct, Microsoft will try to make the fight a long and drawn out one. And fail.
