I posted something on Slashdot that wasn't a +5 funny AND got more than 2 replies. Something funny going on here.
The point of my post was not to bitch about Linux. Personally, I love it, BUT I still use Windows on MY desktop. And it's not just for games.
Having thought more about my orginal post, I think the issue with Linux going mainstream is familiarity. EVERYBODY knows where the "Start" button is, and what it does. Everybody knows "My Computer", "My Documents", A: C: D:, the list goes on.
Now, my mum (mum, btw, is UK speak for mom) goes on a Linux basics training course. The course uses Fedore Core 3 (eg). She then goes out and buys a PC with Gentoo pre-installed. The look and feel is completely different. Hm.
And then consider the latest coolest new hardware. "Yeah mum, no problem, just recompile your kernel and it'll work fine."
Linux is great for those that WANT to use it. But, as is the case with my mum, she just wants to switch her computer on and use it.
I personally can't see a simple solution to the familiarity issue, there's too many flavours of Linux now, each trying to be better than the others.
I'm am not a M$ advocate at all. I am a heavy Linux user. But the truth is, Linux has been "coming of age" for about 3 bloody years. And in my opinion, it isn't yet ready for the home desktop.
Dunno about you, but I wouldn't like the thought of my mum (mom?) being sat in front of a Linux machine. Until Linux is ready for my mum to use, it's not ready to replace Windows.
Looking at the FCC docs, and this one in particular. The is a photo of the bottom of the can. On the bottom is a label, on this is text that says "Made in Finland". What the betting that the device has been made by Nokia?
Usually remote unlocking doesn't require any extra hardware at all. The process involved requires feeding the IMEI (international mobile equipment identity, get by entering *#06# on your handset) into an application that runs an algorithm. The output of which will be valid unlock codes, as supplied by network/manufacturer when you pay for them.
Reading the article, I can't believe the Beagle was actually launched. The odds are stacked well against it. It WILL be a miracle is this mission is a success.
Maybe that's why they planned a Christmas Day landing, what with it being the time of miracles.
King of Fighters 2003 has also had a limited Jamma PCB release for arcades around the world this week.
King of Fighters is NOT a JAMMA PCB. It is a Neo Geo cartridge. JAMMA (Japanese Arcade Machine Manufacturers Association) is a standard of connector used on PCBs by nearly all mid 80s onwards arcade games. It is a 56 way edge connector. See here for details.
Now, Neo Geo motherboards usually have JAMMA edge connectors, but the games themselves are not JAMMA.
I started working from home just over a year ago. My other previous jobs were all office based.
The initial discipline took some getting used to, but we got there in the end.
Social interaction was the biggest issue, I have a wife and 3 kids at home, but we still need a change of scenery. My health was also starting to suffer. In my previous jobs I did a lot of support work that meant probably several miles a day of walking between buildings/offices. The nature of my current job has me tied to my desk. After a few months I noticed (well, the missus did actually) that my weight was increasing at an alarming rate. I cured two problems with one solution. I get up earlier now (rather than the old 15 minutes before I started work), and take a walk for the morning paper. Gets me some exercise and also allows me to socially interact with others. On my lunch break I take the dog out. When I finish work I take the dog AND the kids out for a walk.
It took a lot of getting used to working from home, but I don't think I would easily go back to office work now. It's all about adjusting to the different working environment.
While I don't realistly think that anybody is going to purchase this item, what a great piece of marketing! Now they will get loads of free publicity due to all the news web sites, "look at this" email and usenet postings. It was good enough for/. to post.;o)
I haven't read all the comments, I can't be arsed, so this might already have been said.
In the UK there are 2 kinds of "gambling" machines. AWP (Amusement With Prizes) and SWP (Skill With Prizes). AWPs are simply as their name implies. Amusement machines that you're meant to enjoy playing, and if you're lucky you'll get some cash back. SWPs involve skill. They are usually things like grabber machines. There are a few SWP fruit machines but these tend to be found in clubs and offer far higher prizes (apprx £250). However, these will only give you a proper gamble chance when there's enough cash in the box to cover the operators profits. The gambles tend to be very hard high speed types too.
I understand the greivance of the creator of the site in question. It's more about trade descriptions that fraudulent machines.
To me the big issue is the supposed SWP grabber machines. Grabbers that only have ultra weak grabs except for a few predetermined times. Having three kids, I've had plent of opportunity to see this for myself. Most grabbers have the solenoid visible, and you can see it struggling to keep hold. On the few times you manage to win a prize, the solenoid is visibly stronger.
The key to winning on these machines (and fruits) is to watch somebody else fill them with money then give up. That's when you play. Once you have won a prize, walk away.
On of the biggest hurdles for the Sega Dreamcast hacking crew was reading the GD-ROMS that games came on. A non standard CD format that ordinary readers had no chance in hell of reading. It was only when someone modded the DC to squirt the GD-ROM contents out to a PC that the ISO images started appearing all over the web. This was also before broadband was popular, so downloading 700Mb files in 20Mb chunks wasn't fun. Went a long way in terms of copy protection did them pesky GD-ROMS.
Nil pwa
Talk about stating the obvious!
Or easyScrabble, and have Stelios (I'll sue anyone) Haji-Ioannou on his back.
Cor, what about Easy-i-Scabble?
that older people do with it
;o)
I dare you to say that in front of my mum!
Whhoooaaa!

RTA. The author appears to have actually destroyed a card due to the demands put on it by dual heading.
Show how you can bring it down in seconds by launching NMAP, nessus, nikto, at it.

I though this was the trailer to the next movie.

...no one's gone ahead and tried to run Linux on it yet...where's my modchip?
Actually, somebody has. No mod chip required either.

shooting live for 12 hours and then replaying in a loop
Loop? Surely it'll just be repeated. After all, how many times can you loop 12 hours in 12 hours?
Kazaa?
eDonkey?
