Well, the Barbie Linux thing may be a hoax, but the Barbie B-Book is real. Although it looks pretty lame. I mean, I dunno how much it costs (it's not for sale in North America) but aren't Zire's like $50?
I e-mailed Apple and got an immediate automated response that said something I only kind of remember because I didn't read it all. Their customer service sucks.
Way to get a plus 5. What did they say when you called their toll free 1-800-APL-CARE, or 1-800-SOS-APPL?
The Very Common Logic Board problem with iBooks had nothing to do with failure of the board. Thanks for making that shit up. It was a problem with the ATI chip that caused video problems. I know, I had it. It was from iBooks produced in 2002. They STILL will let you replace the logic board if you get that problem. Thanks for making THAT shit up. G4 iBooks have had no common problem.
As for iPods, Apple has a 90 day warranty that covers almost everything (things like screens and power supplies are not covered) then they have a one year limited warranty where it depends on if it's a defect or that you are damaging the product, since both are gratis, it's up to Apple to find out whether there is a defect in the product or that you should not be let around electronics, and it sounds like the latter.
I dropped my 30GB 3G iPod and got the sad iPod and Apple replaced it no questions asked, 6 months after I got it.
I had a 700 MHz G3 iBook (2002 model) that I broke the power supply off in. People do it all the time, no big deal, $100 repair. Well, when I took it to the Apple store they sent it off, it came back 2 weeks later and started up with a kernel panic. No problem, I have an IT degree, I can handle that. None of the ROM commands for bypassing the internal drive would work, but the keyboard worked because I could boot into single user mode (at least until the kernel panic came up). Called 1-800-APL-CARE walked them through everything. The guy there said it may be a RAM problem. Said to take it to an Apple store and they would send it off to fix it again
Turns out, when they fixed my power supply they damaged my logic board. Well, they replaced that, the hard drive and my optical drive, which was a SuperDrive that I had put in when they did the original logic board replacement for the bad ATI chip. So it comes back and they replaced my SUPERDRIVE with a CD-ROM! Back to 1-800-APL-CARE. Told them this time it needs to be fixed by Apple in an Apple Store (because third parties work on them when you send them out).
Well, they get the right optical drive and install it into my beloved iBook. Works great, only now it won't charge the battery. Damaged the logic board AGAIN! I'm about ready to cry, I just want my iBook fixed. So finally I get to a tech on AppleCare that will help.
Apple replaced my 4-year old 700MHz G3 with a BRAND NEW 1.33GHz G4 iBook! Even though I had to go through a lot I think that was an awesome tradeoff.
A few [...] aren't even first-party titles... though admittedly almost all of the top titles are."
Hmm, I seem to remember when people bought a Genesis or an SNES just because of the exclusive first-party games. Now people act like that's a bad thing.
Nintendo just needs to recover from Gamecube's failure
Um, how was Gamecube a failure? Just because it wasn't #1? Ever sales figure I have seen for Gamecube and XBox numbers puts them at about even (making them a tie for DISTANT second). So Nintendo sells about as many units as Microsoft, and makes money on all of them while Microsoft LOSES money on every XBox ever sold, and Nintendo is a failure??
Wow, I wish I could come up with a failed product like that.
I really predict the Revolution is going to be the new NES. It is going to steal all the thunder from MS and Sony that not only is it cheaper, has an easier to use as well as innovative controller, but it also plays all of the Gamecube games as well as a slew of old games from Nintendo, SEGA, and NEC/Hudson.
LOTS of female gamers just want to be able to play NES games. LOTS of older gamers just want the simplicity of story and gameplay without having to learn wacky controls for a pseudo 3D world where navigating the world is the majority of the gameplay.
Plus it's been rumoured by Nintendo themselves that Twilight Princess will be enhanced on a Revolution.
All computers are not Windows computers. Just because you have a problem on YOUR computer, does not mean there's anything wrong with the technology. I have a bluetooth dongle that I just plugged into my mini and it Just Works. I have bluetooth built into my iBook. In fact, I even have a "Send file to Treo" automator workflow.
Noone ever complains about my t-shirt, Dickies shorts, and piercings when I'm done fixing their shit.
That's because you're a blue collar worker. You're hired help. You're not viewed any differently by companies than the guy that comes to fix the garbage disposal or the guy that brings the water coolers.
You deal with the "little people" of a company. The ones whose job is going to India tomorrow. What president of a company cares if they like what you're wearing? He's never going to see you.
You're not an executive so your point is moot. The article is about executives at companies having to deal with the pony tail and sandals crowd. NOT Charlie Cubicle.
Similarly, the OSS culture needs to integrate more artists to help polish clipart and GUI's, and writers to flesh out documentation and instruction manuals.
Yeah, it does. However, trying to say to a Firefox coder that it would take up less space on a tab and be more useful if the Favicon of a tab would alternate with the close tab control when you hovered over the tab. AdiumX on Mac OS X already does this for tabbed chatting. Well, I got a screenful of how the way the close tab control disappears when the tabs get crowded (except the current tab) is somehow better because of consistency.
That's just one real life example. When people with a sense of aesthetic try to get involved in most OSS projects, you get drowned out by the guys who think there's nothing wrong with their code if it doesn't have bugs.
I hope everyone remember Firefox only exists because someone on the Mozilla team thought the interface for Mozilla looked like ass.
The whole argument about suits vs. sandals really is that people without a sense of aesthetic refuse to admit it.
Business casual is an oxymoron if I've ever heard it. The only CEO you're going to see coming into the office without a suit is Steve Jobs. The concept of dress casual came about in the 90's as a way to immediately distinguish the management from the unwashed masses of workers. In the 80's, the president of the company didn't look any different than the receptionist. I did a paper on this in 98.
The main speed improvement from Panther to Tiger was for G3 machines because the parts of the system they could not transition to be Universal or Intel had to be optimised for the G3 (that's what code Rosetta runs). Before I got my new iBook G4 1.33, I had an iBook G3 700 and there was noticiable improvement. Most sites claimed that G3 systems performed 30% faster.
The OTHER big speed improvement came at startup from launchd but you're only going to get the benefits of launchd if you do a clean install of Tiger and not an upgrade.
The Revolution download service is definitely meant for retro gaming. however if there's going to be a whole slew of emulators for this game, you can be sure it won't be long before companies start releasing more collections like Namco does, only it would be newer ports.
Hopefully the one thing this will do is revive the great old and abandoned franchises (Bonk, Kid Icarus, RC Pro AM, ToeJam and Earl, etc).
You forgot Tetris DS. It's a total fangasm. The new push mode, if nothing else catches your eye, is worth the price of the game. It's Tetris tug of war. I just wish Nintendo had added rumble feature when you cleared a line. That would have been fun.
There's been rumours for a while that Sonic Team was going to make a sequel to NiGHTS on the Gamecube. At this point I'd just be happy for a DS port. NiGHTS was one of the most fun and visually stuninng games I've ever played.
There's no information ANYWHERE that this is true. Just looking at the sales of the Treo 650, which dominates the smartphone market, it's clear that a PalmOS-based smartphone is where it's at. There have been statements made by people at Palm (with all the mergers, splits and buyouts, who know who said them and if they hold) that the Treo 650 MIGHT be the last GARNET-based Treo, whereas there will be COBALT-based Treos coming up.

HD does NOT make a game better.

Apple is a love mark.

And only men wore wigs and stockings.

But diarrhea doesn't kill people; dehydration kills people.
This also makes sense because I'm going to bet that if Leopard even supports G3 machines at all it will be the last version. Apple recently calssified all G3 machines (except white iBooks) Obsolete outside of the US and inside the US they are considered Vintage.
The OTHER big speed improvement came at startup from launchd but you're only going to get the benefits of launchd if you do a clean install of Tiger and not an upgrade.
Especially since Apple is using 4200 RPM drives in the G4 minis.
As with all software, it requires the developer to implement that feature.
The history of RPGs, before video games even, is that avatars do not die, but "lose the will to fight". Most rpg video games use this concept still.
It sure is. You also can make LOTS of money doing it, too.
Hopefully the one thing this will do is revive the great old and abandoned franchises (Bonk, Kid Icarus, RC Pro AM, ToeJam and Earl, etc).
