yeah... until the next big thing comes out, or a new viewing medium is invented.
Yeah, i know this is star wars and this is the first time it is gracing this new playback medium and everyone is throwing flowers. Dancing in the streets. But look, its just a dvd. I mean, better quality sure. But the still same-old same-old.
I'm just so burnt out on marketing speak these days. Anticipated DVDs. Box office smashers. Its all just talk to push product. And at the end of the day, it's all pointless.
Number of Linux distributions: There's no way to
make a good installer that will install a commercial app on Linux and have everything work. There are too many dependencies for specific versions of libraries and things that would make this sort of thing worse than any kind of Windows DLL hell.
This is the primary reason I stopped using Linux as my desktop. Installing a program was the hardest thing being I'm not very compile savvy and don't plan to be. I'm hoping that autopackage solves this problem. And forget about RPMS. Once installing programs becomes a matter of mouse clicks (no term windows), then I'm sold.
And you don't see the military having this problem? What's their budget.... between 300 - 400 billion? A year. POOF. Every 12 months. And you don't have a problem with THAT?
To quote Willie, "Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". Remember that 'cause wasted time is lost time. And lost time is irreplacable. Like our lives.
The most irritating thing open OO is when you open new documents, it opens up a new taskbar slot. Is there are a way to open documents in one app as opposed to a gazillion of them?
I think what they mean is that if they come up to any problems which requires a software work-around, they'll lose time waiting for the vendor to address the issue. Chances are, they run into this problem during post which is expected. So, they eat into their padding time. Now - if the job will take only five days to do in house, double that for out of house work. So, with the source code, they gain back their five days which they could put to other uses. Like snorting cocaine off a prostitute's breasts.
Nationalism is an absurd concept. But in any case, I apologize for calling Austrailia a bum fuck place. It's not. Neither is Canada. That was gut reaction with no class. So here's to living in a sane world. Cheers.
first of all, you seem to have a gripe with the people who are running the United States. Guess what? I have a gripe with them too. But if you are so cultured and wise to the ways of the world, you would recognize that a country's populace does not reflect those who run it. The current administration is absolutely crazy. And to argue that the populace elected them is another stretch of the imagination. Don't you recall hearing something of the America's 2000 election fiasco?
Many movies are shot in other places in the world as they take place in other places in the world and it would better serve to advance the plot of the movie.
You evidently have not worked in film. Producers don't give a damn to story in comparasin to the bottom line. If this producer can shave 10 percent of his budget by shooting in Canada, or Bulgaria, then he'll do it. It's the art departments job to make the locale look the part. And working with a better exchange rate, they'll have the resources to do it. And if they can get local personnel, and shave even more money, then that's what they'll do. In the end, its local US who boys who get screwed. And note, runaway production have been escalating for years, long before movie piracy became so common
You can pay actors, actresses and athletes ridiculous amounts of money however you can't provide health care, employment and a place to live for so many of your own people.
Funny, I never knew that the government ran the entertainment industry. Sure, the salaries are ludicrous, but those are private transactions. And yes, those salaries definitely hurt the bottom line. As for government spending, I'm all for universal health care and other basic human rights. Personally, I'd love to slash the military and put those resources to the people. But that's not gonna happen, especailly with business so embued into the system which plainy does suck.
And I agree with you in regards to our own companies selling us out. Listen - I don't like the free market system. I never said I did. I don't like our manufacturing jobs being shipped out to other countries. Especially to places in China where sweatshops have become an artform. But i'm not running this country. Big business currently is doing it, and I have to live with the results of it.
I suggest you stop believing your own predjudices about Americans, and start actually meeting them. Your post seems to hijack the topic at hand in an attempt to espouse your views of my people and country. Fine. That's your right. But if you took to the time to take your head out of your backside, you'd realize that you and I probably share a lot of views. But its so damn fun kick an American. Isn't it?
I can tell you that piracy isn't so much hurting the trade, as is shooting gigs in Canada, Austrailia, and other bum fuck places where they get their crew for peanuts. That's the main threat for American cinema workers. Not Kazaa
I love these arguments. Sure, you have the freedom of speech, but you have to take responsibility for the speech. Ok - so I say - "overthrow the government". You say, "fine. now go to jail".
How is that freedom of speech? To me, that's not freedom. Freedom of speech does not take account for responisbility. You are free to express yourself without being killed by the authorities. Right? By your definitition, everyone in Soviet Russia had freedom of speech. Sure, they could excercise it. But if they did, they would be sent to some rat hole in Siberia being they didn't speak "responsibly".
My favorite quote is this:
Inciting people into a violent revolt that thretens the stability of the entire society is not responsible. Talk like this should be dealt harshly with.
One man's violence is another man's peace movement. And any chump in power can label a peacenik a violent revolutionary. Look at Jesus. Ghandi. Martin Luther King. Maybe we should deal with everyone the same. Yeah. For the sake of society.
I've been running it for awhile and it works great. There's slight window redrawing problems, but that's just fluff. The meat of the program is solid. Check out the demo version is you have any doubts. Worth the money.
Have you contacted the project about their lack of a useful bibliographer? I mean, ranting on slashdot might get you a few pats on the back and some understanding, but do yourself (and us) a favor and rant to the folks who build the thing. God knows, they probably NEED your guidance in creating the most effective tool, and if you know what works (in terms of your research and experience) then you are a valuable resource. These guys are coders. You're a field guy. Your experience is extremely important to the project. So do the right thing and step up.
Not to be disrepectful or anything, but this has always been the case with the cinema, and I might extend my argument to encompass art in general. Hell, bring computer science into it, if you want to.
The artists fall in love with the medium, but ignore the story, hence they create a crappy product. After awhile, water finds its level, and the balance is restored. I am most familiar with the the cinema but I am sure you can find a similar theme running throughout all of art. With the cinema, we had the advent of sound which produced a boat load of crappy sound films. I believe at the time people thought it was a fad and we would go back to silents which of course, would never be the case. Then came color. And with the rise of the blockbuster, we had special effects taking ahold of us in the eighties, and now we are seeing cgi enter the palette of the filmmaker.
I will even argue the same with trends such as in the forties we had noirs out the ying-yang. In the fifties, we had musicals. In the late sixties early seventies, we had the counter-culture movies. Then the blackpoltation movies. We had slasher films in the eightes.
All the crap dissappears and we remember the best. But during the time period, we are saturated with all of them. And in time, we will forget.
if you read the book (no, this isn't meant to be a jab, just a small detail), you'd see that the protaganist - Winston Something (I forget) - knows its the year 1984, but also realizes in the same thought, it could be any year. He admits he doesn't know since the party controls everything. As far as he knows, its been 1984 for years. Very Matrixy.
Kidding aside, I absolutely agree with you. I think Dean Kootz put it best in his novel "Sieze the Night" when he stated that the collective intelligence of a family drops 5 IQ points per TV in a household.

Yes - I'm having server problems today.
Where did they show it in Glendale? At the Mann? I live on Louise and Glenoaks, btw. Hats off to you fellow Glendalian.

If you want, I can let you borrow my ex-girlfriend. Just put her in the corner of the room and she'll solve that cooling problem of yours in no time.
I think emily dickinson had a thought or two on the matter as well -
I took my Power in my Hand--
And went against the World--
'Twas not so much as David--had--
But I--was twice as bold--
I aimed by Pebble--but Myself
Was all the one that fell--
Was it Goliath--was too large--
Or was myself--too small?
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams
Yeah, and give me 699 a processor as well.

So...without virus writers, our computers would weaker, easier to infect by virus writers? hmmm.
In other news, breathing is good for you.

How is this any different from Windows XP? (I'm specifically thinking of product activation here)
You're confused. SCO is suing IBM, not Microsoft.
A far easier method is to head over to SourceForge, download PDF Creator, and print to PDF from your application.

seems like you get around a lot
