for me to poop on! I'm just waiting for someone to write new CD drivers to play these CD's that won't play on a computer. Not only that, but there is technology such as having optical outputs and inputs on CD and computers that will allow someone to simply playback the CD and record it on a computer with almost no loss in quality. No microphone and speaker necessary. And that will surely be better than the WMA tracks that they'll put on the computer. I highly doubt the quality on the tracks will be anything above 64kbps.
Maybe we can just ignore most of the events that supposedly took place according to TOS and TNG. This could possibly be the alternate universe that appeared in DS9. Then we can stop overanalyzing fictional history and try to enjoy it for entertainment value.
Just because George W. Bush became is republican doesn't mean he was the only candidate with money. The democratic party also has a very much comparable amount (if not more) to spend. I'll remind you that most of Hollywood leans to the left, and you know how much money they make. Lousy $8.00 movie tickets.
Even if the battle in Congress is hopeful for us (at least I hope most of us here are on the side of Linux), maybe a case to say that this law is unconstitutional should be launched. You can't lobby the Supreme Court with Megabucks.
I am shocked. I can't beleive that a company with an flawless track record on release dated such as Microsoft is having trouble releasing this. What's next? Bugs in Windows?
People write the MS worms because an NT security hole is easier to find than a linux security hole. Besides, most of the people who know of the linux security holes probably are developers, who wouldn't want their name tarnished by releasing a malicious virus. As long as linux holes are patched before the hackers find out about them, linux will stay one step ahead. MS, on the other hand, has very visible security holes and none of the programmers there worry about finding them. Thus, they only release fixes after considerable damage has been done.
I bet they'll try to apply this to Internet Explorer and viewing Anti-MS content will violate the license agreement. They'll probably have counter measure send back names of people viewing content and terminate the...
[MSIE666 ERROR: Anti-MS Threshold reached. Terminating Session. Please wait for FBI to arrive. Yes, we own them too]
Is anyone here scared that someone other than the government may get the key to the backdoor? It sounds like the old master-key that was rumored to be posessed by students in my dorm. Whats to keep a spy from breaking into the CIA, FBI, or wherever we keep the software to instantly break the encryption and then viewing our messages, including probably the CIA's messages because our government will probably write in that they have to obey this law also.
Since all the good.com names are already taken, the company that owns whatever.com would buy whatever.biz, thus no real solution to the shortage of names (if such shortage really exists). I see it as just a way to make the.com owners pay more money to Verisign so they have to protect their name. What would keep me from registering microsoft.biz besides microsoft having to pay for it.
I know that we've veered offtopic here. Anyways, the electoral college system is still a good idea, considering we're a democratic republic. We have to remember that our country is composed of fifty states (after all, we're the United STATES of America, not the United PEOPLE of America). The electoral college system was designed as a way for the states to select who they vote for. Essentially, if more people vote for Bush than for Gore, the state sends all its representatives who will vote for Bush. A real democracy would be really hard to manage due to the way votes would have to be counted. Imagine the recount necessary on a national level. We'd still be recounting. On the other hand, it will get rid of the media factor (calling states when not everyone has voted). It will take alot longer for the media to get a good count, which will at least make the system fairer for those in western states.
Ok, if this law is passed, here will be two illegal things.
1. Using strong uncrackable encryption for communications.
2. Flying airplanes into buildings (already illegal)
Well, if the terrorists are willing to violate the second law, surely they'll go ahead and break the encryption law. This will be useless. It's about as useless as asking passengers on airplanes if they're terrorists.
Even though I get most of my news through the internet, I find that on Tuesday the easiest way was through Television. We had several TV's set up in our offices and watched the news unfold.
I'd like to congratulate Slashdot for keeping this site up and also to the news agencies for being able to handle the extreme number of hits. However, I think it showed that we aren't quite ready to move toward putting all of our television and phone networks on the internet. It seems that the servers, not the backbone or ISPs were the ones that were being choked.
Remember, pray for the victims and their families...
I have to agree with this one. The real solution to the problem is not to attempt prevention at the site of the incidents, such as airports or military bases, but at the real source of the problem, the terrorist cells in the mideast (and europe and the US). America didn't win WWII by keeping anti-aircraft guns manned 24/7, but by attacking the nations that were attacking them.
I think a declaration of war would be appropriate. Whether or not this is state sponsored, it has the same effect on our nation and should warrant the same response. And if any nation does not cooperate, we should inform them that we will send in our troops into their nation to hunt down the terrorists, and any resistance to this by their nation's military would result in retaliation on that nation.
There is a major problem in the world, and for some time political and military leaders have said the 21st century battlefield has no borders. Isn't it time we stop playing the soft game of litigation and politics in international affairs and strike back militarily. Only after cleansing the world of this problem can we go back to normal life. We won't have to worry about terrorists hijacking planes if we kill them all off. Freedom has always had a price. Those before us had to pay the price for ours, now it seems our time has come to pay for the future's.
Here's an article from Fox News on how asbestos would have saved lives. The irony is that all the hysteria was caused by a few "asbestos related" deaths is now superceded by the number of deaths at the WTC Tuesday, which probably would have been reduced because of increased evacuation time had the panic not occured.
The number of lives lost in this heinous act makes me sick. But one of the problems that will come up in the next few weeks is the monetary amount of damage. Not only did someone lose the amount of money for the lease on the building (some $3 billion I read), but much money will be spent on cleaning up the three inches of ash covering lower manhattan. Plus, if it is some mid-east country or terrorist organization responsible, then those countries may not send us oil when we launch our retaliation.
If Osama bin Laden is responsible for these actions, which seems most likely, then we should not only hunt him down for the sake of properly resolving this conflict, but we should seize his assetts (somewhere in the billions of dollars) and use them to partially rebuild what we have lost. We can never regain what we have lost today.
God bless the victims and their families
God bless America

Maybe France should turn from evolving its legal code and put more work into bathing technology. I'll sell you the recipe for soap.

...the answer to the linux has no viruses arguement. Just make in act like a Windows box and you can get all their "features".

It's because only law abiding citizens obey the law.

That's what all those news agencies get for beleiving the evil lies of Micro$oft and running IIS. They just can't handle the load!
