Whenever some relative gets all complimentary because I fixed their pc - or someone tells me I must be smart because I work with computers- I just check out past challenges. Oh yeah-- I can almost hear the ego hissing away as my head returns to normal size.
When I was in school - I would do a lot of comparison shopping for books- but bookpool had the lowest price so frequently that I quit looking around and just went straight there.
I saved tons of money over buying them from the school book store.
I do remember it. PBS ran a great special on population changes this week. But I really don't think that laws restricting reproduction are the answer - that is my point. You have to look at other options rather than handing the government control over what you do with your body.
You can make this argument about almost any kind of human activity. Everything we do has some impact on others. Video games are killing me- all those fat kids that are going to need tons of medical care in 20 years- I don't want to pay for their slovenly living. Cars that are capable of exceeding the speed limit- running up my insurance, killing people. You could go on all day.
You need to look at not only the impact of individual choices- but the options in controlling those choices. Who will be in charge of determining birth rates? How will it be enforced? Is what society gains worth what individuals must give up? Do you want a government that controls your life to this level? I don't.
It took me 3 tries to get the main page to load. Every page on the sign up form failed once or twice. Apparently they have issues with any kind of load.
Dial up does everything I need at home. If I want an ISO or something- I download and burn it at work. I imagine there are a lot of people in the same boat.
I guess they need to change that to:Have you bought a car with the hood welded shut?
I know this- I can do a lot of work myself on my '69 Chevy - but it sucks to drive compared to a new car- and the only thing safe about it is that it is huge and made of medal. Just lap belts- no airbags - drum brakes all around. I could go on. There are no good old days for cars. If it is safer- easier to drive and more fuel efficient- I'll pay somebody to fix it.
all the way through. "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins and "An Oblique Approach" by David Drake. Both were available to download for free. I read both on my lap top and it took a really long time- I had to have free time, my laptop powered up and be somewhere it was convenient. I would say it took twice as long as if they had been printed copies.
For reference material- the stuff I use the most I print out and put into binders (Like all my PostgreSQL manuals) I have "Unix in a Nutshell" on CD and in print. I use the print version almost exclusively. Even without a searching tool I can find stuff faster.
Last but not least- I don't care what the value of all the thousands of books is compared to the cost of the subscription. What is the difference between what the subscription costs and the cost of the books I would have bought or needed? Factor in the lack of usability and that price difference needs to be huge. It still isn't for any such services I've looked at.
That's not bigotry - have you spent a lot of time in Mexico? I have. I live just a few hours north of the U.S./Mexico border. The standard of living there is low. Most people live without access to clean water and their diets are at best poor. You see children that obviously have had their growth impacted by a lack of nutrition. I've done a lot of volunteer work down there- helping with medical and dental clinics. I'm not a bigot- I'm just telling it like it is.
This is true of just about any 'ethnic' food in a country other than that of its origin. I have had friends who would snub a place because they said it wasn't authentic. I think that is stupid.
I eat food that I like. When I go to a Mexican restaurant - I don't want to eat the crap most mexicans eat. When I go to a Korean restaurant I don't order concrete chips and dirt since that is whats on the menu in North Korea. Don't even get me started about an Ethiopian restaurant I enjoy. And I've never been to China but I'm thinking that the majority of the population eats something very different than what I get at China Chili - but the food there is awesome- the restaurant is family owned and run - by get this- people from China. So yes - I'm an American - and yes I'm sure I'm eating Chinese food as it is defined by my context.
When I was in Hong Kong I ate some really good food that was also probably not chinese - but that is probably as close as I'll ever get.
And rightly so- hot & sour soup is awesome. If they screw it up- what else is going to be bad? There is a buffet place by me that puts chicken in their hot & sour soup. It is kind of wierd and I don't think I like it. I'll stick to my tofu and mushrooms please.
I am now craving some- I wonder if China Chili sells it by the bowl (it is usually just a side with a lunch order)
and be reasonable- nice even. All right- living joke was too strong. Sorry about that.
I don't watch much t.v.- though I did like Firefly and I own the DVD set.
I must confess I've flirted with not having a t.v. - but it's a nice escape sometimes. I do enjoy sports and can't afford to go in person - and PBS does some good work where I really do learn. I don't have cable.
I really limit how much my kids watch- and I just don't have time to watch much myself. Everything in moderation seems applicable.
Sorry again- just remember- as excited as you are to share the wonder of a life free of the boob tube- sometimes the best form of evangelism is the indirect, 'soft' approach. Otherwise you just turn people off.
And no it is not a joke that you don't have a t.v.- but that you can't help telling everyone at the slightest opportunity (even if you have to invent the opportunity).
Good advice. I didn't think about that (focused on my own needs) but you are right. The other thing I like - is that if it is open people can tweak it to fit their preferences. What I want is to be able to store multiple routes, distance, time (including splits) and maybe throw a little calories burned calculator in there or something.
Running gets you a higher amount of aerobic benefit in a shorter period of time
You can do it in smaller area
running shoes are way more affordable than a good bike
running does not require a helmet
you can run anywhere
if you go on vacation- just bring your shoes and you are good to go
Disadvantages:
you have to be very careful to avoid injury
the high impact is too much for some people
I think it is good for people to do something- I don't care what it is as long as they like it. I have never found running to be boring. I love it and find biking to be boring.
No - I'm dead serious- I'm not gonna get into the whole gun rights debate- but I carry pretty much wherever it is legal to do so. My fanny pack holster is designed just for this kind of thing.
This whole overrated is not metamoderated thing sucks. How on earth can my post - that hasn't been modded up be overrated? It pisses me off- and usually I just blow it off- but moderation abuse is worse than trolls as far as I am concerned.

Running for Geeks
·
· Score: 1
real runners? come on. I guess my 3 miles a night is fake running.
One of the best things about running is that is individual. I hate team sports- in highschool I ran track and cross country. There is a team score but individual performance is the focus. It is you against yourself- and whatever works- works. If somebody likes to run w/some gadgets- and doesn't go out and do a triathalon or marathon- that doesn't make them any less of a real runner.
Would you want to wear it all during a race? Of course not but training and racing are completely different things. You do things in each you would not do in the other. Ask any real runner if you don't want to take my word for it.
MP3 player- music always helps me think. I keep it down- so I can still hear around me (somebody passing on a bike, etc.)
Bianchi Fanny Pack - for essentials - which are
Cell phone, i.d., key to house and my gun.
The only thing that really adds substantial penalty weight is the pistol. But you know what- after enough close calls with dogs and having to run at night (it gets hot in AZ in the summer) it just seems better to pack some extra weight rather than end up injured or dead.
But the way I look at it- this just helps me get stronger. It certainly doesn't interfere with my thoughts and time spent reflecting on life, the universe and everything while I am running.
Running was a big part of my life- but a mixture of fatherhood, getting into I.T. and gaining weight got me out of the groove.
In february I went on the Hacker's Diet and got running again. The running has gotten much better as I have lost weight. The biggest help tech has been was replacing my radio with an mp3 player. I picked up a Nomad MuVo NX and it is awesome. No commercials, no sucky songs and it is a quarter of the size of my old radio.
The loneliness of the long distance runner is much nicer with my tunes.
I am currently working on developing a full featured 'running log' for the palm os. Once I get it past the initial design stage I intend to GPL it and put is up on source forge. Any other geek runners interested? Is there something already out there I've missed (that is open)?
It could be a good way to not only monitor their health but to make sure that they do not wander off. - the only issue I see is the size. It is pretty large. I couldn't sleep with that thing strapped to my stomach - and I would think it would be even worse for someone of large girth.
Whenever some relative gets all complimentary because I fixed their pc - or someone tells me I must be smart because I work with computers- I just check out past challenges. Oh yeah-- I can almost hear the ego hissing away as my head returns to normal size.
Too many liberal arts classes in college I guess

I just went to Spymac.com and there is nothing there but a dead server.
why should I pay for it at home?

You should drop your isp (feed some family in Africa for a month instead- every month), get off the web, and start doing charity work.
/. and start helping humanity
No, seriously, quit clogging

does it play ogg?! that's the important question!
If they can make the cpod keep working after a human dies- why don't they just make the whole human out of the same stuff as the cpod?
all us boys got unusual names. Makes you tough.
