  1. I give up on New IM Worm Installs Own Web Browser · · Score: 1

Although I know it's a pain in the ass for us admins, I almost have gotten to the point of hoping that all of these computers get infected to the point that they are no longer useable. Spyware has been around forever and everyone and their brother knows what it's capable of doing. For people to actually continue to let this infect their system is unbelievable. The only way this is going to be fixed is for people to have to pay hundreds of dollars to get their systems repaired until they get to the point where they either are tired of paying or they smarten up. Jesus people, just by using common sense this wouldn't be an issue.

Sure they know how to do their basic email, web surfing, music stuff but beyond that they have no clue. They use PC's at their offices and have no issues. It has nothing to do with being smarter in doctors cases. It's all about being an elitist for them. They look at Mac's and say if I get one of those i'll be cool. The exact same way they purchase a car.

I'm thinking this is a troll but what they hey, I'll bite. The problem with the P2P flooding is not that people don't know how to use it. I've used P2P for quite awhile now and would consider myself somewhat "skilled" at searching for things I need. The junk files are the exact same size as a normal file would be. A song for example, will show that it's a 192KB song, lasts 4:30, and is shared by 40 people. So you download it and start to listen. The first 30 seconds is perfect audio, then it's followed by 4 minutes of either dead silence or some sort of annoying tone. I can almost guarantee that there's more junk out there than real files. And as a side note, you may want to know what you're talking about before you start calling people dumb.

Riiiighht. And If you leave your window open or door unlocked then everyone has the right to walk into your house and do whatever they feel like? Or maybe it's YOUR fault that you didn't put a strong enough lock on the door.

It's not that big of a deal, they shouldn't face charges.

Yes it is a big deal, in more ways than one. The kids were all old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. They all knew that "hacking" their computers and downloading music and porn was wrong. One of the kids even was quoted as saying, "I knew it was against school policy but I didn't know it was against the law." Well, now he knows and will always remember after being charged with a crime.

What crime did they commit? Not sure as the article really doesn't say but based on some of the things they did, I can assume that they didn't download free music that didn't require a payment. Anyone trying to make an excuse for what they did should be sent back to school as obviously you need to learn a few things.

I worked at a prison as a Correctional Office, C.O., screw, whatever for a little over 2 years in Arizona. Some of the things that inmates and convicts get are unbelievable. They have satellite tv, which from what I've been told has been cut down on considerably since I was there. They have access to every law book and case file that they could ever want. They have free medical and dental as long as their on indegent status, which believe me is everyone whether they're broke or not. Having a web site or blog doesn't surprise me. What does suprise me is the complete and utter support some people give these inmates/convicts to be able to do anything they want. It's a prison and they are there for a reason. It's easy for someone to say that they can't be denied theire freedom of speech, etc, etc. But tell the lady that got shot in the face at point blank range by a guy wanting her purse. Tell her family that you think the inmates are being mistreated. And yes, this was an actual case where I worked. Bottom line is that they are there for punishment. They are not there to live better than half of the people outside of prison. And they certainly shouldn't be allowed to communicate to the outside world short of visitation. Work in a prison for awhile or have someone you know or love killed by someone and you won't be calling for inmates to get the things they want.

before I read the article I agreed with the statements. And yes, I did read it. I think that people are finally starting to realise, at least in the OSS community that linux will never overtake Windows in the desktop market. Why? Because people, IE the general public, associate computers with Windows. If it says made for Windows XP on a new workstation, the average Joe is going to feel comfortable. If it says, made for Linux, people aren't going to feel as comfortable. Just ask Redhat how well packaging up linux for the desktop worked out for them. It worked so well that they abandoned it in favor of the server/enterprise market. A place where they already had a huge share. Trust me, if anyone could have swung the desktop momentum it was Redhat and you see how that turned out.

I've seen references to the fact that people want to see alot of browsers with a medium sized market share because it stimulates inovation and that in turn makes it better for the "consumer". I beg to differ. I think there needs to always be a clear cut winnner in everything. If there's not, then it waters down the product so to speak.

Look at airlines for example. While we all have our favorites, there's not really a clear cut leader in air travel. This has led to average service and fares at best. If there was a clear cut leader, the others would bust their ass to try and overtake them.

Which leads us to things like operating systems and web browsers. Microsoft is obviously ahead in the OS department but that's led the *nix community to rally and do everything they can to try and overtake them. Same thing with the browser wars. IE has long had a dominant share of the market and that in turn has spawned Firefox, Opera, etc. Each struggling to overtake the giant. I for one love seeing the improvments browsers have made. Besides, we all like rooting for the underdog and that's exactly what Firefox is. For now....

I don't blame the Open Source community for this, in fact I don't really blame anyone.
