I've coded, on average, 70 hours a week, for the last six years. This has been on my own project, which is coming along nicely (after about a dozen complete rewrites, language changes, and overhauls).
Stop posting on Slashdot Broussard, and get back to finishing Duke Nuken Forever for petes sake - you've had long enough.
I've pirated a few games in my time.. and when a patch comes out and when I am no longer allowed to play it over the net because I am out of date, or they move to make some restriction that stops the juwarez monkeys from playing their game I don't bitch about it.. I accept it as the flip side to being able to play the game early or for free. Tough shit if I was too cheap to fork out the money for it!
Kudos to Valve for having the balls to try and tackle the root cause of the problem.. combine cutting out the publisher and a pretty darn secure way of delivering games to people and we might yet actually see a reduction in game prices. They are hopefully setting the trend - combine that with not needing the CD to play the game either, and you have a winning combination IMHO. Not quite sure whats gonna happen though if my broadband net connection goes off for some reason?
For the record I purchased the bronze package (cheapass I know.. never mind) about 10 minutes after Steam pricing packages were made available, and then at about 30 seconds past 'zero hour' when they were supposed to have enabled the HL2 authentication servers I closed and reopened Steam, unlocked HL2 and was playing in about 10 minutes.
The game is awesome. I finished it this weekend and loved every minute of it.. those who haven't tried it thanks to some irrational fear of Steam or something really need to get over it and try it out.. you ARE missing out by not playing this game. Its the new benchmark quite frankly.
So killer that they even nicked the iPod mini's feature of being available in different colours. But they have it in MORE colours than the mini so it HAD to be better right?
These guys need to learn to be better than Apple, not just clone their product and sell it cheaper ffs.
However you are dead wrong.. I am a through and through Linux supporter. I am the guy always trying to champion the free software alternative at work, and I used to admin Linux boxes for my job before I made a mistake in my career path and went over to being a general techie for a small company.
I love Linux and free software overall, and where possible i'd MUCH rather use it over the expensive and usually inferior alternatives. But I was just making a point.. twas all:)
Sorry but like the Open Office vs Microsoft Office debate.. for free products they are astoundingly good, and given the choice between not using office and graphics tools and using OO / GIMP then i'd use the free software in a second.
But if price were no issue, the commercial applications would rule the roost! THATS a no brainer... IMHO of course.
On my first ever visit to Amsterdam, I was sat with a group of friends smoking a particularly potent joint out of the front of one of many coffee shops in the city. I'd had a few and was feeling in good spirits, and was starting to get the occasional weird sensation.. and then I looked up to see one of those things trundle past loaded with people.. quite a strange feeling, followed by loud laughter when I found out I wasn't seeing things:)
I have suffered similar patterns on a Windows XP box I have on my desk as a kind of semi testing servery type box.
Goes ok for a few weeks but then starts to misbehave - running slowly, stuff like IE just doesn't load any more, etc etc. Its very weird but then I think its fair to say that XP isn't designed to run for two weeks solid and that if I want that kind of functionality from a Microsoft OS I should be looking for one of their server offerings:)
But you should understand that just about every single Brit supported what Tony Martin did.. its not our fault that our laws seem to support criminals, and work against innocent people trying to defend their homes.
I don't feel that owning firearms is necessarily the answer.. I just feel that the justice system should be doing more to punish the criminals who quite happily & blissfully ruin normal peoples lives.
UK car thieves seem undeterred, regardless of how shitty a car is.
My friend has had his POS 1.1 litre Metro broken into a few times - simply because its easy to break into, its good for taking and thrashing around city streets for a night before being crashed into a field and burned out.
I wish I could say that I loved this country, but the slack jawed chavvy retards that seem to be an ever expanding part of our society are slowly making it hard to feel proud to be British.
Our net connection at work today was totally choked with a huge DoS attack.
Considering i've not seen this happen for the 5 years i've been using that connection (previous job used my job as their ISP), and considering the fact we have multiple lines including 155mbit ATM's, it seems to be very very unusual timing for this article to come up.
No - typically the only coverage was the stuff that set out to make SCO seem like they had a serious case, and were going to take the "thieving Linux developers" to the cleaners.
Now that the tables are turned and SCO are being exposed for the scumbags that they are, the media seems to have gone quiet.
Has anyone else noticed that the last picture in that list, with the picture of the lander in centre shot and the brilliant bright sun to the top right..
If you go into Photoshop and lay a 105mm prime lens flare at about 86% strength on the picture just slightly to the left of the original picture, you end up with an identical effect - including all little render reflections and stuff in exactly the same places.
Why the hell would they stick a Photoshop lens flare render over the top of a real sun?!
Well not that this post will even get read because of the huge amount of replies to this thread, but.. spose I should participate;)
The UPS
I personally have only ever damaged one thing.. we had a brand new APC Symettra UPS thing, which was this huge floor standing thing with enough power to run multiple servers in the event of a failure. We were in the middle of setting it up in our server room and I was pushing the trolley in with a few of the battery cells on the top.. as I pushed the trolley into the room, one of the batterys (still wrapped in plastic bagging) caught on the door handle. I didn't notice until the battery slipped off the trolley and missed by foot by a few inches..
It smashed all the connection up on the back - so we just called Dell and said it was damaged on arrival and they sent a new one;)
The Cisco Callmanager
These are just rebadged Compaq 1U servers.. we were trying to do some server relocation in one of our racks but couldn't afford to switch the callmanager off. So one of my collegues was holding the server whilst switched on, while we moved the rack kit for it. Problem was he only balanced it on one knee... I mentioned it was a bit risky just as it slipped off his knee and smashed on the floor. All the cabled ripped out of it, and the lid did a clown car effect with it springing open!
We ran it into the office to do some emergency repairs on it (straighten the now bent chassis, recconnect stuff, etc) and it worked right away without any problems. Thank god.;)
I hope that quote gets used a little later on down the line, when some 14 year old writes a few lines of code that circumvents yet another uncrackable encryption / protection system...

Your Investors.
Damn. My enormous £34 investment will potentially be unusable in 3 to 4 years time. I'm sure I won't lose any sleep over it.
Can't remeber firing up any of the games I own after that period of time quite frankly.. there will always be something newer and 'shinier' I guess.

Took me about 7 minutes.. early bird catches the worm and all that ;)

Thanks for the generalisation there.

Christ - its hardly like it just cost you the price of two DLT tapes to write those ISO images or something.
A spindle of 100 CD-R's costs around £14 here currently... so two blank CD-R's is around 28p, or the cost of a chocolate bar. Sound the bells!
Try writing RC's onto CD-RW's and then when updates come out, wipe them and burn the latest version!
Sheesh.
Just reminded me of a bit from Ghostbusters 2:
STANTZ: I guess so, Pete, because that's not all. Tell them what else we've got, Egon.
SPENGLER: You mean the Ghostbusters hot beverage thermal mugs and free balloons for the kids?

I got a better one for you.. Shatner is starring in some TV commercials for breakfast cereal here at the minute.
I could barely believe it when one came on this evening..
Viewing Star Wars content is an option.
Just disable it if pisses you off so much.

OH NOES! TEH APPOCALYPES!!11
Yeah, like that little known outfit called AMD. I know you might not of heard of them, but they do make some good chips ;) :)

Shall I email it to your @hotmail address shown in the header of your post?
Worst.. FP.. ever!
I ran BIND9 on Red Hat 7.2 for about 2 years.. its still running now in fact. No random crashes on BIND ever in that time. It was rock solid...

..the discs, by themselves, cannot be hacked..
