The new ad technology, from Unicast, an advertising company based in New York, invisibly loads the commercial while unwitting users read a Web page, then displays the ad across the entire browser area when users click to a new page. The resulting ad is identical to TV, whether the user has a high- or low-speed connection. The company says the technology evades pop-up blockers, but the person can skip the ad by clicking a box.

are they going to remove that ? after all this is exactly like having a copy of iTunes and their own store on every windowsXP install in existence, if thats not unfair practice i dont know what is

also if i click on a movie/mp3 link in MSIE (on any site) it opens in a sidebar which also redirects to windowsmedia.com (without permission i might add and has a tracking code attached) where adverts/promotions are shown, there is no way anyone can compete with this as its built into the core of XP (i had to block go.microsoft.com and windowsmedia.com as this was the only way to stop this behaviour) of course the majority of non tech-savvy/aware people wont know how to do this and so are at the mercy of MS's redirects/media tracking and marketing power.

combined with windowsmedia player the whole operating system has multiple callbacks to MS where they redirect you to their choice of destination without permission , can anyone say anti-trust again ?

stopping the default browser is one thing , but they have designed the whole system to get you to commercial services they control so in reality this wont stop their consumer drive much, europe is already warming up the antitrust suits and when an official engineer (for the antitrust) inspects the system i think he will be suprised at the level of integration between MS commercial services and windowsXP

As Kazaa comes bundled with multiple spyware programs this also gives you an idea of how many computers are infected with its programs, mind boggling really

remember Kazaa is just a vehicle for this software as their revenue model is based on the user installing it, i feel sorry for all the support desks that are going to have to deal with all the problems it brings and the security implications when someone/thing exploits it, imagine how many corporate systems are infected and the implications that could bring for security in the workplace now that other private companies have direct access to their data bypassing firewalls etc (by using http port 80 to communicate) i mean Windows isnt exactly the most secure system around but these applications have made this so much worse and it can only be a matter of time until someone develops a *nix port of spyware.

The sooner they are out of buisness the better for the user, but these numbers prove that it isnt going to happen unless virus companies decide to pull their fingers out and target these applications which are probably more destructive and intrusive than most viruses.

According to the virus scanner companies stance , if you release a worm, virus etc with an EULA you are exempt from detection and are free to extract any information you like from the users/hosts system for financial gain
(regardless of what laws exist to protect the users data in his/her country)

luckily a few good people have addressed this problem but as their software isn't as widely known as the big boys (Symantec,Mcafee,Sophos etc) and doesn't come bundled as standard by pc manufacters (as a lot of virus protection does) i fear this situation can only get worse until the users computer becomes an un-usable device

wrong, its a hardware and driver standard, hence why it is also present in a Macintosh
Both platforms running Logic Audio or Cubase use ASIO if the hardware supports it.

All You Need To Know About ASIO
As computers become more commonplace in recording and home project studios, so does the demand for faster, more responsive sound cards to work in these systems. A sound card is expected to enhance the recording process by handling many jobs at once. At any given time it's expected to be recording audio from a single or multiple inputs, playing back audio from multiple sources such as audio from the hard drive or virtual synthesizer instruments, and doing it all in a synchronous manner keeping in step with MIDI or other time dependent devices. These requirements are steep and often leave an ill-equipped system at a grinding halt.

In order to create a more direct path to the hardware, and also make the hardware more responsive to the software's needs, Steinberg of Germany (developer of the popular Cubase digital sequencer and Nuendo digital audio workstation) developed Audio Stream In/Out (ASIO) technology. ASIO has made its mark as the driver standard for delivering low-latency transfer of digital audio. This means that hardware supporting an ASIO driver is able to deliver low-latency recording and monitoring to hard disk.
