  3. My parents are half doomed on Protecting Our Parents' PCs? · · Score: 1

I do what I can to help my parents out with their computer. My mother is paranoid enough that she only uses what's been taught to her. If anything pops up or looks unusual, she has me take a look at it. My father, on the other hand, does his own thing. With his love for porn, I am always coming across The Bad Things on his computer. He tries to blame my 'helpless' mother, but I know it's his negligence that causes the computer to become infected or trashed with unwanted things. His job keeps him out of town half the year, and it's when he's out of town that the computer is actually safe. Fun times.

  4. Redundant, Etc. on Working Around Bad Luck on the Resume? · · Score: 1

As reduntant as this is, I agree with those that say you are fortunate enough to come to the interview.

At one place where I sent my application, I never heard back from them. It was 2 months later when I was at that business and speaking with the manager that he gained a better understanding of me. I mentioned that I had applied for the job and heard nothing back, and he went to his office to find my application. He came right back with it and said he'd set up an interview right away. 3 days and 2 interviews later I had the job. It turns out he never contacted me when I applied because of a 6 month gap between my last job and the current time. Just from speaking with me though in a matter of minutes, he had a good feeling on the type of person I am and could be to the company.

I believe honesty is a key factor in anything. Be honest and be straightforward. Explain without bias and/or resentment what exactly happened just as you would like someone you'd interview to explain to you.

You said it yourself: bad luck on a resume. No need to work around it. Embrace it and use it to your advantage. G'luck :)

  5. Department of Planning on Starting a Home-Based Software Company? · · Score: 1

I had to fill out a form with the Department of Planning. That included agreeing to never have customers come on-site and to not have any markings outside showing my place of residence was also a business. I had to give them the square footage of my townhouse, the square footage of area set aside for my business, and a sketch of the layout. There was also a $50 charge attached to this. My business exists solely online, so the restrictions really didn't apply to me anyway. The only thing that irked me was them wanting to know the entire square footage of my home, a sketch of the floors, and the frickin 50 bucks just to have them stamp a big ol' "ACCEPTED" on the form.

  7. What methods will they use? on Pennsylvania Court Forces ISPs to Block Porn Sites · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree with the question everyone else is asking. Just how are they going to block the sites? I can just imagine an ISP blocking sites based on words found on the pages. If that happened, even Slashdot would be blocked. Look what words have already been said in this thread. Child porn, naked, kiddie, and the list goes on. I don't see any possible way to block those kinds of sites at this time. Sure, the ISP can have a list. But the sites on that list will change. And while who ever is in charge of making the list is putting together a new one, users WANTING those sites will have already found new ones. It's a vicious cycle, and I don't think forcing ISPs to 'block' sites is going to help AT ALL.

  9. What to show on TV on Getting Started In Linux · · Score: 4, Interesting

While what I have in mind is nothing special or cool, it is something that I think many people really need to see. My parents, for example, use the computer to play games, mostly card games, browse the web, send email, and other every day things. The thing that bothers them is that they have no control whatsoever. Something crashes and they have no clue what they can do as a user.

It would be beneficial to many average users to see that Linux can do all of the every day tasks they perform. Show them the simple things. They can use email, web browsers, play games that come with kde or gnome, and still play web-based games like Yahoo! Pool. Getting them started on something they feel comfortable with will be an easy step they can make. Then they can move onto controlling and customizing the OS one piece at a time.

I don't really see this as such a bad thing... My ISP does not support home networking, so they will not give help until the network is taken down and proven to not be causing the problem.. Microsoft's support team was not trained to deal with modded xboxes, so I can see why there would be a rule to not giving support to those with the mods done.

Being a beginner to *nix (having only started running it for a couple years now), I mostly use Windows because of school. I am taking two webcourses at the moment, so I am constantly sending my instructors documents in Word format (correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume *nix can't save as Word formats). Also, I am in the programming curriculum and taking c# this semester so I am using VS .Net. As much as I enjoy slackware and learning about it, I am not comfortable nor knowledgable enough to go full-blown *nix only while I still depend on M$ apps.

My other friend that lives near me is in the middle of a divorce because he couldn't get away from the game. Two other people I know that met in-game did get involved, did meet, and are now married. Years ago people played with GI Joes. DBZ action figures are harmless. If my son wants to pretend to shoot some spirit bomb on me, that's fine. The quote could very well mean that he was making an exclamation.. Yes, he had already removed Windows from his computer, but he was just now absorbing what that meant, that he COULD do just as well with another OS.. Get my meaning?
