I would guess that a lot of the anti-civil-liberties laws that got shoved through recently were not created recently. I bet they were just waiting around for a good enough excuse that the public would accept it.
In the latest newsweek, with Bush on the cover, there is an article on John Ashcroft. It's a great article describing how all the Patriot Act, and others came about. Give it a read!
after all, do we really want Microsoft to have that much control over things?"
I think I speak for every/.er out there when I say very cleary, and most definately...Yes. We WOULD like Microsoft to have that much control over things.
So the dow-checmical.com website was put up only to be taken down a short time later. Hmmm, they could have planned THAT better...and they did!
Reamweaver seems to serve a malicious purpose to those who use it for that. Consider that it may have been their intent to "violate" the DMCA just to get exposure (PRESS coverage).
So what is the question that every activist should be asking themselves right now? It's...
Boy oh boy. The title of this news story is sooooo misleading. Taking shots at Microsoft is fun, but leading people to believe Microsoft vandalized NYC puts certain images in my head of destruction and tagging. BYE!
In that episode of Happy Days, keep in mind the show had been on forever, they had pretty much run out of story ideas. When a lame episode where the Fonz went water skiing was made people knew the show had jumped the shark. The Fonz is cool, but not when he is water skiing.
It was mentioned...Carmack is the owner of an Aerospace company, has tons of money, and a hot girlfriend he would not have any reason to sell out.
So... There was a story yesterday about a conference ID held. If you noticed the banner ATI was sponsoring it. Obviously he is going to recommend ATI...but if we can all agree that he is a pure hacker at heart than he will never sell out. John is just using the best hardware, because like all of us geeks he wants speed, and feautres (lots).
Now that we agree he is a pure hacker, the X-Box question is trivial. He likes a good challenge, and wants his baby (new technology) to be in front of every geek face in the world.
To summarize: 1. Carmack has no reason to "sell out" 2. Hackers like the newest best gear 3. Hackers want everybody too see their creations.
After reading the notes from the EFF's meeting with Microsoft there is a lingering question...
Will this kill open source on the desktop?
My thoughts:
Microsoft says it will produce specs so that Linux can use Pd hardware. Will portions of this code have to be closed source, possibly written by another company and purchased? In effect this would hurt Free Software on the desktop by requiring a purchase to use Pd technology.
This would basically make running Linux on the desktop cost similar to windows. The reason I say that is because consumers like buzz words. Once Pd is in the market people like my mom will continue to use Windows.
What would be the point of Free Software if desktop users still have to pay for the features that they "think" they need?
Feel free to tear this apart, and discuss. I just wanted to get my ideas our there.
I agree with you in principal, but in practice that just doesn't work. Most of the people who ask stupid questions dont know HOW to look up an answer in a manual...
So the boss of an auto shop asks for advice on fixing his car from an employee. They tell him to RTFM. Obviously that won't work, and it shouldn't be acceptable. That's why the guy mentioned by the parent was fired.
It doesn't matter how stupid the question is, if you job is to answer questions than do it (nicely) or get fired.
Well, that was assuming that strong enough legislation passed making SPAM illegal...thus discouraging the dorks who send SPAM. Then the only "SPAM" you would recieve would be controlable.
Did anybody else realize how great this could be? Sign up for this service with a junk mail account (I have 2) and let it flow. This keeps your physical mail box clean, and you can check the legit SPAM whenever you want. There have to be drawbacks! Are there?
I've read articles describing a great use for dual head monitors in FPS. One is normal view, the other is zoomed in view. That way every weapon is a sniper rifle. Actually I think I read that here on/.
Woooo! In your experience...blah blah blah. Everybody has experiences that disprove everybody elses. Until you can provide some statistics that have been conducted in a scientific and non-biased way then shut up.
This goes for everybody else too!
Don't use words like "generally" or statements like "well this happened to me so i'm right"
When I took the AP computer science test in high school we had to code on paper! I'm just like you...I get my vibe when I am in front of the computer coding, not with a pencil and paper.
My highschool had 2 computer labs that would work perfect for such tests. I'm glad you brought this up, it always irritated me.

"How can the DMCA help my cause?"
This thing would have me floored. Surfing for pr0n would not only become easy, but dangerous...
"I don't like this kind of pr0n Dave..."
After the computer fails to sense your mood...
"I know I've made some very poor pr0n decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal."
Okay, you caught me, all I did was grab some 2001 quotes and insert pr0n. Give me KARMA!
Happy New Years!!!!

3 things could be slowing slashdot today:
1. Carmack seeking revenge for the Alpha leek news. Yep, BOY can he hack. Geek vendettas rule!
2. Somebody got the alpha mirrored on slashdot.
3. Taco is playing the alpha on slashdot servers.
Meh. Any other ideas?

Um...How about not speeding?

Here in WASHINGTON on Q13 reports @ 10 they covered the story and got it right. Somebody is paying attention, and it's not just us geeks! Yay!

For the simple reason that hard drives fail, everybody should burn "My documents."
ppl need to read (the fine manual)

You live longer, are more moral, and generally do better if you belive in something.
Um...where did you happen to pull those statements from? Do you have a link or two for us?
You live longer? Why? If that's true then sign me up!
More moral? A lot of wars are caused by religion. (no link needed, taught in school)
Generally do better? LOL. Do better in/on what? Religious tests?
To loosely quote another poster today: Karma will overcome your dogma.
