    I know there's a circle jerk of workarounds, patches and gotchas to avoid this, but it should never be a problem in the first place. The basic unix security model is out-of-date, and is the source of many systemic problems.

    I completely agree! As will anyone with any netware security experiance. I'd love to see eDir's security model fit on top of ext3 or ReiserFS

    iPod doesn't run MacOS 9 or 10, I don't think it even runs darwin. Correct me if i'm wrong about darwin.

    And it's only getting smaller. Gone are the days of many different manufacturers (for example, the single company Audi, which is now only a part of a larger company, started life as four independent companies -- thus the four interlocked circles of the Audi badge),

    Maybe there's a link between this trend and the big-business-owns-US-gov trend?

    Where did you get $6/month from?

    Standard tivo fee is at least $12.99/month. That's high for just downloading tv listings and keeping track of everything I watch. It should be free for the privilege of tracking everything I do with it in my opinion.

    If software had to live up to safety standards the same way physical products did, the authors of the software could be sued just like the makers of the physical products.

    It already does! If I get caught by the FBI for downloads a product worth $199 MSRP, thats what I'll get charged for "stealing", even if no one lost any money or possesions. Thats a huge double standard. Copyright enfringment shouldn't have theft built in. The law is wrong.

    And just to add a little twist to this comment, imagine of MS was doing what Google is doing. People would be screaming bloody murder and citing the reason I cited above. Sort of sad really....

    You've completely forgotten 1 important thing: google is an honest company. From there on you can't compare this to if MS was doing the same thing.

    Even with 250megs of hotmail storage I know they're just going to sell the address to a spammer anyway!
