That may be true. However, by 1999, most of the upgrades were already completed. The company where I work, (for instance), replaced all of our computer equipment in late 1997. All equipment purchased at that time was certified as Y2K compliant and handled the rollover without a hiccup.

That's called taxation (or perhaps, extortion :).

You and I just have to agree to disagree here; there is absolutely no way I would give up rights before cash.

I realize from your comments that you are not any more in favor of Hilary's stance on GTA than I am. I just wanted to point out that quoting out of context does nothing but harm your position.

  4. Re:Some Perspective on Senator Clinton Slams GTA · · Score: 1

Yeah, I got that. I just plain disagree with you.

The difference is fiscal as opposed to moral. I don't see a problem with telling people that there isn't enough money to spread around and that sacrifices need to be made. Personally, I prefer that she tells that to a room of rich folks instead of poor ones.

It's sort of like Daddy coming home and telling their kid, "No, you can't have extra allowance this week because we can't afford it - even though Mommy told you it would be ok". To me, that's a lot different than the town Mayor dropping by the house and taking away your x-rated DVDs because the township has decided that people should not have access to 'those' types of movies. I'd be moving out of that town post haste! Especially before they decide that I also can't paint my house bright green because that's also offensive to the majority, (yeah, those are ridiculous examples - but you get the idea).

The contextual difference here is that, with her GTA statement, Hilary has stepped over the line and entered the realm of moral issues. With that, I have a huge problem. As others have already stated in this thread, it's not the government's job to parent our children for us. GTA is already labeled as 'M' so Uncle Sam's job is already done, IMO.

Your out-of-context quote struck me as more of a personal attack on Senator Clinton - as opposed to an attack on her GTA/morality stance. Maybe that's not how you intended it, but that's how I read it.

  5. Re:Some Perspective on Senator Clinton Slams GTA · · Score: 1

No he's right. That was a moronic argument. Context is everything - especially in the 'soundbite' society that we live in today.

Quoting out of context, getting called on it, and then trying to say that context doesn't matter just makes you look, well... 'defensive' might be a better term than 'moronic'. But really, your argument is indefensible. At least in this context.

Yes. But if that happens at least MS has been forced by competition to innovate. Something that most likely won't happen, (at least as quickly), without the market pressures currently being exerted by OSS.

Besides, there is always a leap-frog effect. Someone innovates - someone else builds a better mousetrap. Rinse, lather, repeat.

In the end, the consumers win. Which is a good deal all around, IMO.

I work in the custom luggage industry. Most combo-lock mechanisms that I see are 3-digit. Yes, you can get locks with more digits but three is most common, (which is why I put "(most common)" in my post - maybe you missed that part? I kinda doubt that since you quoted it in your reply). But to answer your question; No, I don't believe there is a number shortage in Sweden at present. They are probably just conserving and planning for the day when there might be an actual number shortage. (Don't ask; it's a Swedish thing :).

Also, keep in mind that most luggage has these things called 'handles'. If a thief really wants your stuff, they will grab it by the afore-mentioned 'handle', take it home, and drill the fucker open. IOW, luggage locks are only there to keep the honest people honest.

Another thing: here in the States, you aren't allowed to lock checked baggage anymore. Airport screeners require that luggage be left unlocked to facilitate spot-checking of baggage. (Don't argue with this or you may well be labeled a terrorist.)

    (Cue swelling, patriotic music...)
I, for one, sleep much better at night knowing that bags everywhere are unlocked and available for inspection by hordes of shiny-faced, wide-awake baggage inspectors all across this great land of ours.
