I agree. It's one thing to have a quality April Fools joke (I thought slashdot should have run a story claiming they were slashdotted, and when you clicked the link to slashdot inside the story summary, it told you that the maximum bandwidth had been exceeded, or some such nonsense). Instead, it seems like Slashdot (and the rest of the web for that matter) are going for quantity over quality.
When you can look at a story's headline and tell it's fake immediatly, it's just not funny. Lets face it, the April Fools stories posted here today are either blatently obvious that they're fake to most users, and to the others, they probably have no idea why it's supposed to be funny anyway. And, if it is something that's obviously fake, it better be well written. (Which I have failed to see anywhere really)
Next comes my third gripe. WHY THE HELL DO I KEEP CHECKING SLASHDOT ALL DAY TODAY? Granted, I had checked it more frequently earlier in the day, hoping for some good fun, but found none. As I would subsequently check again and again, I found the time between to be getting steadily longer. But you know what? I'm gonna check back again later. I also fully realise that it is MY doing that brings me to slashdot, no one is holding a gun to my head, but I still believe I should be able to complain if I want to, and so I will.
Anyway, it's all been said before, but it felt good to release, and I'm sure I'll see it again when I check back later.
Since today seems to be the day that the most mod points go towards modding a post as funny, and I'm not funny, can I just ask for them and get them? Thanks.
The voting just better not be via a slashdot poll, I think CowboyNeal would win out, and we all know that Bill Gates would be better for the Open Source/Linux/Etc front.
I'm happy with my microwave. I don't need to have all this connectivity and ease of use when it comes to a microwave. I've never had a problem cooking food with it. If it's undercooked, put it back in, but I've never really overcooked something in the microwave. After the first 5 times or so of using my new microwave, I learned how long to cook various foods based on the cooking directions. To me this is a case of "we have the technology to do it, but do we need to?"
I tend to spend more time on-line now that I do have I am able to find AND get things faster. Used to be I didn't want to wait for anything, so sometimes I wouldn't bother if it wasn't something boring. I find that for me it's the fact that I can get the stuff faster more than find stuff faster, if that makes sense. Now that I can download all the new spiffy program demos of the latest version of anything in at most an hour, rather than all-day/night, I tend to use it a lot more often, has it has become more convienant.
Oops, meant to also add in that going through the holes left by volcanic activity might not be best idea. Gases, hot liquids, etc may end up causing some trouble. Also, the article mentions that radio waves do not travel through water that good, does that apply to most liquids? If they (radio waves) don't travel that well through liquids, how do they plan on sending back data? Have an umbilical cord that leads to the surface and acts as an antenna?
I suppose one possible option might be to basically drill in slowly, and let ice form again on top. However, I'm not sure how you'd overcome the problem of the ice locking/freezing the craft in place. Who knows, maybe you could heat up the entire outer surface of the craft so that it melts it's way down, and as the ice melts, it then refreezes above without freezing in the craft.
Wouldn't one reason a car/suv would be inclined to roll be due to the drag caused by the tires touching the ground? It seems like it'd be a lot harder to tip a car/suv if it had smooth metal tires on an ice surface. Anyway, just a thought.
Cats pretty much see us as big cats but not as cool as they are.
We aren't as cool as they are. We're not capable of jumping extremely high (in proportion to our feet), landing on our feet when dropped/falling, and plus we plain and simple don't have cool retractable claws.
Damn it, I was hoping it'd look like the spaceship from Spaceballs that the hero and the wookie-wannabe (the thing played by John Candy) fly around in.
We get the Sundance Channel through Time Warner Cable, and it's standard cable, not digital. (No real special packages either, just HBO and Sundance as the premium channels)
You bring up a good point. Even if welding, fixing cars, etc, is quite different than troubleshooting hardware, the mentality is still there of "do/fix it yourself". I think when people are in more urban areas, with everything close together, it is much easier for most people to let someone else handle it. However, when you are farther removed from these urban areas that have a "repair shop" for everything, you become more dependant upon yourself. This can then lead to different areas (first mechanic, then PC technician) out of principle, mentality, convienance and the like.
Until you wake up the next morning and find all the spelling mistakes, because you thought it might be a good idea to get some work done when you get home, and then start sipping on coffee/other caffeineted beverage and have to go through and fix up all the mistakes.
I just hope I won't be so poor I'll still be using a DVD-RW/DVD-R/DVD-Etc for another 100 years. Afterall, I'm still using one of the original Soundblaster 16 cards that is about 10 years old and is now in it's 4th machine. (And has been running fine all these years)
On a serious note though, how durable are the discs? Are they really scratch-prone or what? 100 years is nice if the disc is just going to be sitting around not doing much, but if it's put into a lot of use, it may develop scratches over time.
Did it just stop working one day (the ethernet), or was it a gradual type of thing? I suppose if my ethernet died it wouldn't be a big deal, given the price of NICs, but it'd be nice to have a board that was in perfect shape. Also, do you think that the ethernet dying might lead to other problems in the future? (Sort of like a cancer spreading..?)

Oh, and I almost forgot to add please.

Ah well, just some crackpot ideas
Uh dude, Dell shut down.
Well, I thought it was obvious..
If you testify against MS, their henchmen will cut your hair Bill Gates stylee.
Day of the Tentacle - Awesome game. I used to crack up at the donkey or horse or whatever that thing was >every time I saw it.

Should have hit Preview.
Meant to say "in proportion to our height"

What are you saying? It ISN'T cool? NOOOOooooooooooooooooo.
sorry.

Well either way, I'd pronounce it the same, so I'm happy, and you can never take that away from me!(@#*#)#0

I knew the midwest was good at something more than pulling on cow's teets.
(Okay, maybe I just wanted to say teets.)
What? You got beef with cows?
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Move to a different state. Conan airs here at 11:30pm.
A more interesting question is that did you agree to it in the EULA?
An even more interesting question is did you read the EULA?
(the "you" is collective, not you in particular - didn't want you to think I was trolling)
