Refresh rates and power consumption aside, a good CRT offers a significantly better picture then a good LCD. CRTs have better color, better contrast, better refresh rates, and are better suited for displaying content in different resolutions.
But as for HDTV... "HD" is really a fancy term for "higher resolution then regular 'ol TV." "HD" has nothing to do with picture quality, and has nothing do with CRTs or LCDs. Companies sell both CRT and LCD HDTVs (although LCDs seem to dominate the market).
Heck, a CRT monitor is technically an "HD" ready display... It's pretty damn easy to add a tuner to your PC and turn it into an "HD Extreme Mega Media Center Super Happy Fun TV".
I think Frontline did a fairly good job of explaining why the US music industry is not making money.
(60 min: Real Player & Windows Media) http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/sh ows/musi c/view/
P2P may be a problem, but is not the primary reason for decreased earnings.
Personally, I think this has a lot to do with new music. The introduction and promotion of new genres usually gives the industry a boost. Unfortunately, corporate ownership and quarterly profits have forced many labels to avoid risky long term investments for unproven music. They opt for safe manufactured pop and wonder why sales are diminishing.
But, anyway, watch the Frontline piece, it's good stuff.
As for training to become "self sufficient". I'm both a developer and an interactive / graphic designer. Visual communication skills are not something you can simply pick-up. Those of us who are legitimate graphic and interactive designers have spent a LOT of time at universities learning how to solve problems using graphic arts, typography, engineering, psychological research, sociological research, etc etc.
I don't mean to sound condescending (seriously), but most professional graphic or interactive designers have worked their ass off in order to get where they are. That typically means 60+ hour school weeks in a decent undergraduate program, and or even more grueling training in a graduate program.
Unfortunately, many in the development field think designers are talented "artists" who can make things pretty. We're not. We're problem solvers who should be helping users to interact with (your) software or multimedia. Moreover, this interaction should be both incredibly functional and emotionally immersive (ie: iPod).
(this is the part where Slashdot folks respond with "I taught myself and now I'm the head blah bitty blah designer for Company X"... don't listen to those people. Unless they're named David Carson, they probably suck. Worse yet -- they, and or their boss, probably don't realize that they suck.)
Now... what they hell am I getting at? Well, you could start learning visual communication skills in order to become "self sufficient." However, you're interface design work won't be very good unless you take the time to get some real training..... Or, you could hire a graphic or interactive designer.
Graphic and or interactive designers can be quite pricey. $35 to $200 per hour. Nevertheless, if you take advantage designers or grad students who are willing to do quality work for cheep (or free), you could be in good shape. Many designers will work for peanuts if you offer them some creative freedom and have a project they would love to include in their portfolio . Sometimes having a cool piece in your portfolio is worth much more then a paycheck.
If I were you, I would check with your local AIGA chapters ( http://www.aiga.com/ ) or graduate design programs. Look for a talented fresh designer who needs to build up his or her portfolio. Try to get them to do some pro bono work;)
I propose that we establish a public school system on our orbiting death stars. Children will go to school during the day, and during the evening their small stature will allow them to serve an the ideal child labor maintenance crew.
We should also put ninjas into space. The moment terrorists fire ICBMs at the US, we could fire sub orbital interceptor ninjas (the ninjas will be stored in space pods) to detonate the ICBMs with their numb-chucks and kick ass ninja stars.
Ninjas will also be used to stop gay people from marrying or old people from getting affordable pharmaceuticals.
For anyone interested, Frontline produced a very nice documentary about this topic.
Record labels were once small and not very profitable. However during the 80's and early 90's the music industry saw the introduction of CDs, which compelled people to purchase many of their older albums again, as well as the introduction of new genres of pop music ( HipHop, Rap, Grundge, etc). The combination of these events brought a LOT of money to record labels, and that compelled larger corporations to start investing in the music industry. Unfortunately, CDs and new genres of music became mainstream, and now we have corporate labels who are concerned about quarterly profits... not long term investments. All in all, it's a recipe for disaster... and crappy music.
But... any who... watch the Frontline piece to see what happens.

I'm not one to complain about the electoral college or popular vote. The EC, more or less, works. However it could stand a spit shine in some places. Redistricting is a fairly shady practice, some states still have electoral representation based upon outdated demographics, and many people don't feel represented in states with a large number of electors.
But as for " Bush got more votes than any American in history" That may be true, but to keep this in perspective, he also received more votes of opposition then anyone running for the Presidency. Populations increase and election turn out was high. Technically both candidates received more votes then any other candidate running for the Presidency... Bush with 58+ million and Kerry with 55+million.
And to post some random useless information... the previous #1 sport was held by Regan with 54+ million... and, oddly enough, the previous #2 spot was held by Gore with 51+ million.
Well, Gore would have lost had the partial recount continued (the keyword being "partial"), however he would have won if he had pushed for a total recount.
But, Gore did not push for a total recount, and he lost.
I don't know why you'd want dual monitors if you were not a developer, digital media designer, etc. Development and design require you to have multiple windows and applications open at the same time. Therefore, having the extra desktop space is VERY useful.
Nevertheless, if you're just some schmoe who primarily uses MS Office and iTunes, I highly doubt a second monitor is going to increase your productivity. If anything, it's going to provide space for distraction.
Yes, they both had access to the same faulty information. Unfortunately, it's starting to look like our executive branch probably knew that information was faulty from the get go. What's worse, voting for war based upon threats depicted in unknowingly faulty information. Or promoting knowingly faulty information in order to get congress to vote for war?
As as for what Kerry is going to do... didn't he already explain this about 2000 times already? Hell, out of the two guys, he's the only one that actually has a plan that's more detailed then "stay the course,"
1) Kerry going to go back to our allies (the ones that are stronger then Poland).
2) Kerry's going to say "I'm sorry our former president's lame tactics actually increased terrorism in your backyard."
3) Kerry's going to ask for nation building support, and we'll probably get it this time. Why? a) We're going to let out allies obtain reconstruction contracts b) Kerry's already has healthy relationships developed with foreign leaders.
3) Kerry is going to call summit, map out the social landscape in Iraq, and base reconstruction on legitimate research. Why? Because in nation like Iraq you can't simply remove a brutal dictator when that dictator is the only thing preventing a civil war from breaking out.
'Putting the word "Porn" in the headline when no actual pr0n is involved is just CRUEL."
Agreed.
I, like most people, have the HARDEST time finding porn on the internet. For a short second I thought I might get a glimpse at some boobies... but I guess not.
Ya, that South Beach Diet is retarded. But, then again, American's are kind'a dumb. They'll buy anything as long as it's easy and has a snazzy PR campaign.
Agreed. Yet, by owning a Camaro you have, more or less, already told your insurance company a) you don't like to drive slow, and b) you like ac/dc a LOT.;)
Because most people don't use that stuff. Market research tends to show that most people don't want to sit at, or look at, their desk to watch TV. They want a TV in front of a couch or at the foot of a bed....and you can always buy a 3rd party TV tuner for an iMac.
Ehh, I don't know. I'm a grad student right now. Typically, the annoying know-it-alls are the folks who are returning to school.
Yes and no...

I'd mod you up if I could. :)
Why must eeevery audio player be an "iPod Killer"?
Well, considering that the last one was used to sell cars (poorly), I doubt we're going to war yet.
This one will probably sell cars and help you get a loan.

No, Jesus has already been appointed to that position. However, Pat Robinson will fill-in until he arrives. :)
No, they were on Noah'a ark. End of story. ;)

Now, if anyone tries to have a gay marriage, they'll be fired upon from the United Defense death star orbiting above.

I don't quite understand how iPod downloads would work given Apple's DRM.
