  3. DRM question on Nokia Claims Ogg Format is "Proprietary" · · Score: 1

Okay, I am now under the impression that I do not understand some crucial part of DRM and I need someone to clear this up for me.

My (possibly incorrect) understanding of the general idea of DRM schemes was - in very broad strokes - encrypting the file and only decrypting it or parts of it during playback. Why then does it matter if a file format "supports" DRM when you can wrap a crypto scheme around it? It it more secure in some way to have a special container for the restricted audio stream, or somehow more flexible on the developer end?

Could somebody clear this up for me please?

How quickly we forget ourselves. Only a few years ago in the midst of the "Napster Revolution" there was a fair bit of talk about how the media cartels were attacking peer to peer networks before the feared change, because the Internet represented a new paradigm of buisness and other such things. We said that they're not ready for the changes a new world imposes on the market. Well, guess what? They adapted. I certanly don't think that DRM is the right answer as it can only hurt legitimate consumers with little to no effect on piracy. However, this is change, this is how they've adapted to the situation. Many are convinced that the only way that they can protect their assets is to lock them up in a little box and only let the customer borrow the key for a few minutes after they've paid (yet again). They changed, much as any people ranted that they needed to... And it is certainly for the worse.

Yeah, I'm just one more voice in this chorus, but let's face it : Star Trek is dead.

What made the original series and the next generation so good in my eyes is that the stories weren't clear cut "good and evil" conflicts. Often, they were situations with no obvious answer that would really make me think about the problem presented. Nowdays, the writers cater to the lowered bar that america gives them and writes bad plots with worse characters.

This latest movie is a prime example of this trend. Someone else made a comment about how it'll basically be "Harry Potter in space" and I find it difficult to disagree with that analysis.

Ah well, just another two cents.

I certainly hope that this outlook on Lucas' part is correct. Without a doubt, I'm preaching to the choir here when I say that there hasn't been much in the mainstream movies that has proven interesting at all. Let's face it, no matter how much money you throw at some of these awful movies, you still won't manage to hire a writer who can come up with plots beyond a fifth-grader's capacity to understand them.

With any luck, the lower budgets for production will open up the way for relative no-namers to at least get their break and put thier first movie on the big screen.

I'm not holding my breath though... Not after hearing that Jurassic Park 4 is going to hit the theatres in the foreseeable future. They shouldn't have even made the first sequel, let alone the next...

Generally, though, I wonder just what will be done with the code... After all, Quake 3 is positively prehistoric by today's standards. Does the editor support anything current? Would it be worth modifying it to do so?

Arguments of legality aside, I've fonud that BitTorrent is a great way to get files - when I managed to download a 700 meg linux ISO through torrent, it took just about 90 minutes as opposed to the eight plus hours it would have taken to get the file from the site distributing the file. The system itself has flaws, to be certain - the fact that working a .torrent can be a lot like DDOSing yourself (I can't get to anything else when it's running) is a drawback to say the least. However, I get my file quicker, so I'm not going to complain.

As for companies using bittorrent to distribute thier software - more power to them! I'm happy to see blizzard deciding to do this.
