Automatically the NC-17 rating is associated with hardcore porn. Hardcore porn is a big turn off to parents paying for their 15 year old going to the theater. This is a bad business move regardless if the movie is rated NC-17 or unrated due to gore, violence, etc etc... I recall when NC-17 was being put in place that there was a move to have better definitions of "offensive" content to help the horror industry make films that were a bit more graphic without having them associated with pornography. As we all know, this never happened. [...] this morality is based on a sense of purpose and right not based on a religious doctrine but rather an "natural" sense of right and wrong.
"It's ok to ban sex, but it's unfortunate that violent gore fest are banned by being lumped in the same NC-17 rating" comes from a natural sense of right and wrong?
Kids were accessing porn way before the internet came along. Whether it was stealing magazines
When I was 14 I was doing some religion study homework (catholic highschool, it didn't stick) with a team, one of guys asked if we wanted to watch a bootleg porn tape, someone from the AV club had made him a copy. We said yes, off course.
I could have done without the hardcore scripted shit, I just wanted to see nekkid wimmin, the money shots were weird and pointless.
The lesson is: If you want to protect the children, STOP LUMPING HARDCORE PORN AND BOOBIES TOGETHER. And stop trying to stop 14 year olds from seeing boobies, it's doing much more harm than good.
The suggestion that I won't do my job well without peer pressure is insulting to my work ethic. It's nine o'clock here in Seattle right now. After my coffee sets in and my brain wakes up, I will
Go on to slashdot and post about how great your work ethic is. I'd tell you to go back to work, but I'll follow my own advice instead, good day.
This is what is so hateful in Darwinian evolution to religious folks. It's not just that it opposes religious teaching, but that it appears to promote a selfish, self-centred (or, if they're more sophisticated, gene-centred) teaching in its place. You don't find the same opposition to humanism, do you?
I actually do, much to my initial surprise. They start off with rants about how they have no clue how the eye evolved so no one else must, and then they'll often veer off to rant about "secular humanism". Then again, they're quite incoherant through and through, so I don't think there's much point in applying logic to their ravings.
I recall reading once that the cliff created by volcanoes lava flow could eventually break off causeing an underwater landlslide that could potentially wipe out the pacific rim, and the US west coast. I wonder how this all plays
Superman flies around the earth so fast he goes back in time so he can be in two places at once to save both Lois and the whales. Everyone's happy except for Luthor.
Do you think that it's GOOD that kids should be seeing this sort of trash?
Depends on how the law is worded, really. If they're using kids as an excuse to take a first step towards banning this "trsah" altogether, then they should be stopped right there.
Ouais, je sais, c'est une faute de frappe. J'étais à la job, j'avais pas le temps de checker comme il faut, mais j'ai répondu à mon propre message avec la correction. : )
And Nazis invented jet propulsion, the British invented the English language, China invented black powder, I think the Web was invented in Switzerland, the moving picture camera was invented in France (despite US propaganda that reminds me of Checkov in Star Trek claiming everything to be russian), the telephone in Canada (Chekov'ed again), etc.
These examples are not a reason that the US should control it, just some things to think about.
I think about it: The place where something was invented is irrelevant.
Did Microsoft become a movie studio when I wasn't looking, or do you just assume that any member of the class of "evil corporations hated by the average Slashdotter" is automatically in collusion with all of the other members?
When you've read enough article about them colluding to push DRM into computer hardware and to call it "trusted computing", you do.
Ah! Thanks. Thanks a lot, I see they have the full set of MSN emoticons, in a less ugly adium style. That's very helpfull.
It's annoying to have to ask to the people I talk to what those symbols they send are supposed to be.
Adium menu -> Preferences... -> General -> First checkbox: Log Messages
Ah, you know, I tried that, but...
I guess every computer is different, but I've had about 3 crashes in a year or so of use, so I can't relate, there.
Adium crashes my computer. It's not entirely its fault, MSN Messenger is worse, and it's most likely has to do with the amateur hardware hacking I've been doing to frnakenstein my old mac (it was struck by lightning via the phone line; the CPU overheated and fried).
So, thanks to you (and the others who had helpfull replies), now my main complain is the incredibly annoying default sound settings : )...and the fact that it crashes my computer frequently, though the computer can run for days when other aps are running.
One of the nicest new features is the "Unable to Load" page that comes up instead of the alert that interupted your browsing, even while in another tab, on the older versions.
FINALLY! Sweet jebus! "Open in tabs" when a lot of them aren't responding was making me wonder what they had been sniffing at the mozilla foundation, I can't wait to get the official release (I'm waiting for the official, when it shows on their page, I'll get).
some ignorant asshat trying to show off your vast superior habitant slang knowledge.
Hmmm, that would be you, the pedant tryiing to argue that what I said, in my fucking native language, you inbred moron, didn't mean what I meant it to mean. Off course, being a troll, you don't shut up.
So, fuck off and die, looser, you flamebaited and got flamed, you must be SO proud! Finally an achievement within your reach!
Are you claiming that the US is (immoraly?) poaching doctors from countries that need them, or that Socailist nations are failing to reward the obscene amount of work required to become a doctor and that their resulting mediocre health care system is their own fault?
Economic might makes right? That'll be "immoral" then. The doctors don't seem to mind getting their education paid for by the states they abandon, do they?
They bitch and whine that their culture is not being respected
Lets see how much you respect their culture:
Quebecastan [...] fucking law [...] Then you have, the separatists. Those confused folk [...] the vocal "Quebecois" bitch [...] I just ignore the government [...] no matter how much I vote for the "not french people" we keep getting the fucking French
Results? Not. At. All.
So, huge biggot, I say to you: Ferme ta criss de yeule, mon ostie de mangeux de marde.

Are you kidding me?
and the rodents are organising in attack squadrons.
We're doomed!
are we going to have to test for it in sports in the next decade?
Decade? I give it months.

i would much rather have the united states in control than some beurocratic UN organization that's been proven it has members that can be bought.
granted, the US can be bought, too
Priceless.

What the hell does "giving access to culture" mean?
Sharing cultural products, i.e. music & movies.
"Magouilles"
With an "o", sorry.
"Maguilles de coulisses"
Litterally, I think, "backstage swindle".
I'll only take drugs on the advice or prescription of a doctor.
Allright, I can see how that would mean that the doctor uses the drug on you, not that you use drugs. Semantics. Well, good on you.
Who invented the internet? DARPA, US
And Nazis invented jet propulsion, the British invented the English language, China invented black powder, I think the Web was invented in Switzerland, the moving picture camera was invented in France (despite US propaganda that reminds me of Checkov in Star Trek claiming everything to be russian), the telephone in Canada (Chekov'ed again), etc.

No cofee no beer no cough syrup, tea, aspirin or skin creams?
Or did you mean "drugs" as in "prohibited substances"? And not as in drugs?

Have you been living under a rock or something?
I assume you mean "very few emoticons"
...and the fact that it crashes my computer frequently, though the computer can run for days when other aps are running.
Apt assumption...
go here to get as many emoticons as you need.

features from all of the IM clients out there [...] Adium? ;)
Been using it for a few weeks on OSX. It has very little emoticons, I haven't found out how to disable logging, and it's somewhat buggy.
So, not "all" the features.

"Ferme ta criss de yeule," French: Close your beak
STFU, actually.

There is a reason weathly Europeans and Canadians often have private doctors (despite the "free" healthcare system) - and flying to Boston
The reason being that the best doctors get offered obscene amounts of money to move to the states.
