but at the same time, my dad (for instance) can feel comfortable with a product that he can understand.
When you combine a personal firewall and an inexperienced user, one of two things will happen, judging from newsgroups:
a) "My machine is completely invulnerable, I have a personal firewall!" b) The firewall says: "AIEEEEE!!! A dangerous hacking attempt is in progress", and the user panics, because someone pinged his machine.
Well of course the CPU consumes energy, but dont expect the battery life of a portable device improve by 100% when the power the CPU consumes goes down by 50%.
I believe this is why Transmeta processors do worse than the should after all the hype. Yes they consume less energy, but when you take into account all the energy the device consumes, their battery life isn't that much better than a device that has a mobile Pentium. They're just slower...
Pardon for stereotyping, but I thought someone with a nick like that would have known. I don't know how or why it works. It's easy to test, though. Just put a piece of aluminum foil in your mouth and chew for a few minutes. Try not to swallow little pieces of aluminum...
Is there anything like this in the works for the penguin masses?
It would never get done. First of all: Nothing on Linux is easy. Second: When when you finally decide something like this needs to be done, you'll spend the next 2 years arguing about open formats and extendability just in case you need to migrate from Linux to BSD in the future. Third: You'll probably name it something like Gnuve2Gnuc...
Well, as a matter of fact, I haven't bought many games because reviews said they were short. I'm not going to spend 70 euros (at worst) to a game that I'll finish the day I bought it.
I'll wait for second-hand or cheap "gold edition" for those.
Some things the perfect game would have:
Easy to just pick up and play for 20 minutes, advance, then just about drop the controller and stop.
RE-playable.
Must have some "secrets" to find, or to activate, but they must not be obligatory for success. There must not be a monster (or quest) in the main storyline that requires some "secret" weapon or item.
Challenging, but not frustrating, you must be able to advance a little every time you pick up the controller
Not too linear, I don't just want to press a button during a dialogue, then walk two screenfuls to another conversation.
Games and other applications are tightly controlled by the cell phone provider. While you may be able to find "cellphone Java" (the name of the Java variant they run escapes me) applications, good luck getting them to download to your phone.
At school we have tested Java MIDP-applications on several phones, and the easiest phones to install to have been Nokia and Motorola. With Nokia 7650 you can use GPRS, Bluetooth or IR (at least) to load the apps (and ringtones:-) ), and with Motorola Accompli 008(?) you can use the cable that you use when you synchronize your phone and desktop.
With Siemens M50 we have not been able to load any midlets by any means. We even set up a WAP-server, but the phone just hangs.
But I wouldn't say the applications are tightly controlled by the provider, I don't think they are actively trying to hinder people, I just think some are being stupid with how you can install them.
I bet you don't say "Wow! Did you se how that graphic representation of a computer game object instance animated after I controlled my graphic representation of a computer game object instance to virtually collide with it!"
You'll (probably) say "Wow! Did you see how that guy flew after I hit him with my car!"
Like it or not, people speak about people when there only is a bunch of bits twiddling inside a computer and few neurons firing inside your head.
If that blurred the line between computer people and real people in my head, I would have to agree: I'd be a crackpot. Of course someone else would have to see what I am as well, since I'd be too far to help myself.

But does the CPU really consume that much energy? Hasn't the biggest power hog always been backlit displays and disk drives?
I this senario I say (of course without reading the article):
Fuck Eolas.
Sorry, but that's dirty GNU/hippies...
What high radiation?

Oh, oh, oh, I know a slogan: "It's even weirder, and cooler (than 5510)"
does "Mod parent up! +1, Insightful" count?
I've already seen a couple of spams that had bunch of nonsense and a picture attachement. I didn't open the picture, but it could've had an address...
A game being on an abandonware site tells nothing of its age. I woudn't be suprised if GTA3 was on an abandonware site somewhere.
Most abandonware is just apologetic ware. (or warezzzzzz)
But yes, Wasteland truly is very very old.
I'll wait for second-hand or cheap "gold edition" for those.
Some things the perfect game would have:
Soo... Is Vatican/HP like GNU/Linux?
If so, is the library free? (as in speech or as in beer)
Three terrible words:
Page widening post.
Welcome to the year 2002. Lose the tables. Have you heard of Cascading Style Sheets?
I like it!
:-)
reposting a post thats been modded +3 Interesting...
It's good but not that good
Bah, 86% of all statistics are made up on the spot...

Innocent computer people.
I know that you can't win the game peacefully in GTA3, but you can do peaceful things on the side on the non-peaceful missions.
Can you really win the game peacefully in GTAVC?
In case you don't understand the reference, it's from Nethack. Nethack says that when it crashes...
I meant positive karma...
