    It's haxored. http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/ unlocks the rigorous protections (user: frontrow password: frontrow) and enables SSH. It also installs Boxee.

    With SSH it's fairly straightforward to enable USB mass storage, and I currently have an external drive hooked up to the USB port. Making it run Linux is probably easiest by taking it apart and installing off your computer onto the hard drive.

    Using Boxee on my AppleTV is like living in the future. Seamlessly plays my torrented files and streams hulu (with netflix Coming Real Soon).

    It's fantastic.

    YouTube is in the process of re-encoding their videos into H264. The iPhone has a hardware decoder for H264. This is the same way they got YouTube on the AppleTV.

    I saw it with my roommate and a couple girls. I would periodically say something to the girl sitting next to me or my roommate.

    The girl sitting next to my roommate would say something to him, and he would *shush* her.

    My sister is in high school and refers to MP3 players collectively as "iPods" and "knockoff iPods". I don't think I've ever heard her use the term "MP3", and she downloads music all the time.

    My other sister once asked me the difference between and iPod and an MP3 player.

    You're probably not going to get it to play using mplayer, though I haven't checked on the DRM-cracking progress.

    It looks better on my TV than my laptop; on my TV I can't tell the difference between it and broadcast.

    Because most tv shows are 90% dialog.

    Because you can use it on a train or airplane.

    Because when you connect it to a TV it's fine.

    Because you can pull something out of your pocket and show it to your friends.

    They do sell a "dev kit". It's available to their paying developers, and it's called a dev kit.

    If you want to buy the developer membership and the kit, it's $1500, with a nice 20% discount on future hardare purchase[s?].

    They also make you sign an "NDA".
