Seriously, proxying yourself through China is just stupid on its face. I just now loaded the Slashdot front page, and it took 10 seconds to load. That's actually quite good! A long time ago, I got in the habit of loading pages in the background (Opera middle click) and coming back to them later.
I think the slowness is due to the GFW - I can't believe that a country could have such crappy internet access in this day and age - it must be intentionally slowed or degraded. From here to my box in Texas is around 300ms ping with 3% packet loss, consistently, day after day. Contrast this to sites inside China, which load lightning-fast and have no trouble whatsoever. On the other hand, hacking groups and military have access to special lines which bypass the GFW and aren't slowed down at all.
So, in conclusion, I'm going to have to see some evidence of people in NYC using proxies in China. Because I think it's about the stupidest idea you could have. You'd do it for about 3 days, then get frustrated with the round-trip speeds and get a new proxy in Romania or something.

The RFCs were there for the taking, even back in the days before good web search engines. Geocities didn't let you "experiment", they merely provided a group of (crappy) templates which one could then modify (ooh, I'm "hacking teh source d00d!"). The only thing that Geocities did was provide a few free megs of web space, which they then covered with ads. Anyone with a real ISP got some webspace - Geocities was mostly for AOL users and other idiots with crappy ISPs.
It's all well and good to discuss some theory about not resisting pirates and rapists, but I bet it sounds like a great idea to people who are actually there. And where's this "they finally manage to board you" crap coming from? With broken arms and bleeding eardrums, pirates won't be in much shape to fight. In addition, dead hostages bring no ransoms.
