It's more suggesting that Slashdot editors are accepting bribes to link to products. It's a very easy thing to do, due to the very defense that you quote. There have been a slew of questionable articles lately, and it doesn't take a genius to theorize that Slashdot has become corrupt. The risk versus payoff is just too rewarding to pass up. If I were a Slashdot editor, you can believe that I'd put my ass up for sale.

Yeah, I used to be a lurker on comp.protocols.ntp, and it was a nice little traditional Usenet group. Everyone polite, informative, etc. Then, one day, this total asshole barges in and starts flaming the regulars. I mean, using profanity and everything. Of course, in ntpd, everything is done for a reason, and it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good. He started railing on about some leap second issue, and wouldn't stop. Any post that pointed out his shortcomings was typically answered with a stream of abuse instead of a refutation.

The internet is NOT redundant. The days of ARPAnet are long gone. The telephone company's idea of a "redundant circuit" is two wires in the same pipe. Proof of the vulnerability is the outages that occur when there's a fiber cut or a fire in a network center.

Oh, come on. This is the International Olympic Committee that we're talking about here. They're more corrupt than the city of New Orleans. They don't do anything unless someone bribes them to do it. My guess is, the IT contractors aren't offering big enough kickbacks, and they're waving the OSS option around in order to get more money.

And there's the whole Great Firewall issue to deal with. How will the Chinese government deal with it? I don't think that journalists will like having the BBC blocked. Perhaps they'll unblock the space allocated to the Olympic village. But, even then, I don't know if the Great Firewall is technically capable of this. Even five-star hotels catering to foreigners are blocked, and they can show satellite news stations that are off-limits to Chinese nationals.
