  4. Not leave but be prepared to leave on Ask Slashdot: How Would You Deal With A 'Gaslighting' Colleague? · · Score: 1

First thing you should be doing is to put AWAY all your emotional reaction. You need a clear mind to think. The next part is where you really start. Start and think in terms of your economic opportunity.

You need to think the following economic risk benefit analysis. Is(Are) the colleague(s) action(s) resulting in an increase in risk in your economic opportunity (ex: affecting your earning/salary)? And then, does the increase in risk also negatively affect the company profit (your productivity => profit)? If yes, now you have a stand that the company cares and you can start to think whether or not to report (if no, no point in reporting). The clear the negatively effect on company profit, the better the stand. (Think like a kid. When your older bro point finger at you for minor things like eating all the cookies when you didn't. You instead tell mother and prove that he used her wallet for shopping. Since she is very likely to care about her wallet and your bro can't back up his claims, it is an advantage for you.)

Finalize the potential risk of reporting it including no changes with backfire and the potential benefit of reporting with new changes. If the benefit greater than risk, you should report it to higher ups.

It's like the art of war, you counter when you have an advantage. Regardless of he being a superstar, you strike when you have an advantage. That advantage can be a record of anything that gives you the advantage. If you don't have a advantage, it is clearly not your best interest to counter (report) it. In that case, you should just leave and let itself rot. Also, you should NEVER need to confront the colleague doing it, it feels good but you're not doing it because you have an advantage which means NOTHING will change.

  8. Cost Benefit Issue on Ask Slashdot: Why Did 3D TVs and Stereoscopic 3D Television Broadcasting Fail? · · Score: 1

The First problem is Content. The None 3D focus 3D Movies Content.

There's not enough 3D movies out there that gives the viewers a real meaning for a true 3D experience. Just because they've port the movie to 3D, doesn't mean it is the movie good to be viewed in 3D. Titanic in 3D? It feels just like Titanic in 2D most of the time.

This problem is mainly due to the point of view of most movies are in, camera-on-individual view. You see people interacting by flipping side (full screen with their head on Leo and then Kate, etc.) or plain stationary people interaction, most of the time there's no real reason it needs to be 3D because those scenes are flat (notice the cool things in the background, no? the scene is flat). Flat scenes don't give advantage of where the viewers are, thus it doesn't matter if it is 3D or not.

If the movies are like youtube 360 or at least 1st or 3rd person view, it would have worked out to give the viewers a true 3D experience. This is why games can be 3D / AR / VR, because some of them take place in 1st or 3rd person view.

The Second problem is Cost. Hardware Cost.

The 3D TV cost a lot. For little content with high cost, it is no wonder the viewers don't see the benefit.

Nvidia 3D glasses is a different tangent on the Cost Benefit.

In terms of gaming, Nvidia 3D glasses is plain unfortunate, it cost too much to be practical (Screen cost + Glasses cost + hardware vs Content) just like the Virtual Boy. Even full VR Oculus gear is expensive to be quick in adoption. This result in forcing the developers to make up for the 3D content benefit, which so far isn't at a perfect position (think of a VR game you had played. Will you play it again for 2 weekends? no? it needs more content).

Unlike 3D TV which most content depend on big movie companies (so far very few watch 3D youtubes for reasons...), VR can continue to improve with multiple startups to reduce cost or increase benefit (after all, VR Oculus succeeded with a kickstarter). Based on prediction, it is very like the 3D trend will move onward under a very different form (hololen is a sign).

Other side issue of 3D is movement sickness. Regardless of with glasses or under VR, there are viewers that just cannot enjoy the 3D content without nausea.

tl;dr 3D cost a lot, viewers see no great benefit.

  16. All Works on Are Remote Offices Becoming The New Normal? (backchannel.com) · · Score: 1

    are created equal... NOT

The main problem is in fact not all works are created equal. If you are working in a job that doesn't need a lot of coordination or communication, or doesn't have a team, then working remotely will work.

Think back in high school or something, you get a task, a project or a homework. When you finished it, you just present it or hand it in. There is no coordination, communication or team required. Jobs that are like that can work remotely without too much problem.

But if the task is a group project, that's where it gets tricky. If your team is large and you are only a small part of all the work, then remotely will be very difficult. Just like the age when you were just an assistant, you're just a small part of something big and due to the work you preform you need the coordination and communication. However if your team is small and you are responsible for close to half of the team's responsibility, you can more or less work remotely because you don't need to coordinate and communicate as much AND you do need more time to focus and get work done.

Dev works range a lot before the small group to large group project, which makes the remote office potential varies.

The other factors for remote office work or doesn't work due to distraction, those are just personal prefers. If you have discipline to get the job done, you'll either control yourself to minimize the distraction by buying ear plugs/noise cancelling headphone, getting laptops/portable devices or working elsewhere like a coffee place.

  17. Office? Oh You mean Construction on Ask Slashdot: How Should I Furnish (And Secure) My Work-From-Home Office? · · Score: 1

Your requirements are just like those housing clients. You see a space and you see potential, a whole lot of potential. That's the part where you'll get lost and miss your main goal.

Seriously, you should be searching for a housing forum for details. slashdot isn't a good place to get those info. You've say your "big picture" are the small rack, UPS, switch router, a desk, whiteboard walls, but those are just interior design. you can change them all the time as long as you have money.

The biggest picture you should consider first is the structure. Some commenters had noted just buy a container to save your construction decision and planning cost (highly recommendable. time is money and it cost a lot).

Note we are assuming that you want something that will give you productivity and comfort, not some cheap tents, some tree house, or a backyard sheds that'll freeze you to death at night. We are talking about a higher level shed, structure, housing that gives you a good return for a working environment.

For the structure planning, how big is your space for this 'new office'? Do you plan to use the whole space (12x20 room size or construction space size)? Do you need one floor (assume 10ft tall with plywood flooring and simple ceiling) or maybe two floor with an extra ceiling attic? We'll assume wood will be the main constructing material and the structure is sitting on something strong so you don't need extra high strength foundation.

Now, with all the details we'll go back to your budget. Do you even have enough? If not, let's try to reduce the size and the number of floors. Based on preliminary guessing, one floor wood structure, pre-designed shed or pre-designed container will be probably best for you. After you have completed all these budget planning, your next goal is comfort requirement.

Do you live in a warmer place or colder place? Do you need heater or AC more? If you need either, you need insulators. Pick a budget priced for from a selection for construction.

Let's assume you can extent the internet cable and power line from your existing home manually and you don't need water pipeline (bathroom/ toilet/kitchen, etc.). Otherwise, it's another can of worms. We'll also assume your heater and AC is simple and easy to manage with normal power line.

Now your next goal is security and entrance requirements. We'll assume you minimum requirement is one door and maybe three windows. Now you'll have to pick a secured door and windows from a selection in a store and note the size before the structure is constructed. Pick your heater and AC if you haven't and check the size of the windows for them if you want the window hanged type.

The final structure is the outer requirements. Does your place get drones (birds), flying left and right, does it have heavy snow, heavy rain or strong sun? If you have any of those, you will need to pick a roof and outer covering best for you. This is also the part you get to pick other architectural design for additional cost.

After you've done all that, your office structure is complete! NOW you can decide what you want in the office. If your final office is small, you probably don't need or want any partition. But that's not without the small rack. Pick your rack first. You’ll need to know the size of the rack and how much it'll fill up the room. After you note the size and placed it in a corner or close to the AC, it's time for interchangeable interior design.

Since your main point is work without distraction, we'll assume you'll want everything that increases your productivity. You'll want to pick a desk (or desks) suitable for your work and monitors that goes with it. You'll also want to get a comfortable chair for your work. If you didn't pick a rolley-chair flooring due to cost at this point, you'll have to compensate for it. Pick a hard rolley-chair covering or if you have more money you can go for carpet for flooring. Pick the one that is more suitable for work and comfort. If you want a whiteboard wall, look ar
