I was reading those discussions as they happened. They do indeed capture the creator (Gary Weaver)'s attention to detail, and they also describe how he was ripped off when he auctioned the car. Mr. Weaver originally wanted $30k for the car, but ended up getting much less. The person who has the car now is selling it for at least twice what he paid for it. Something to think about if you're considering a bid.

  5. John Z. DeLorean on Technology Makes New Cars Too Expensive to Fix · · Score: 2, Informative

One of the reasons (excuses?) John Z. DeLorean gave for the stainless steel skin on the automobile that bore his name was that it would never rust, thus avoiding what DeLorean saw as built-in obsolescence in cars made by conventional manufacturers with conventional materials. He backed that up by advertising a 25-year warranty on the car's body.

It might not be easier, but wouldn't it be a significantly better investment to build cars meant to last as long as possible rather than cars meant to be thrown away?

  6. Re:my 84 vw rabbit... on Technology Makes New Cars Too Expensive to Fix · · Score: 1

My grandfather has a 1974 Volkswagen Westfailia campervan that he bought, fully intact, from a junkyard. When he finally got around to trying to fix it, the mechanic he took it to deduced that the easiest way to make it run was to remove the emissions equipment entirely. Now, at the time, 1974 vehicles were not yet exempt from California smog regulations.

The mechanic was able to make that damnable dual-carbureted, "inefficient," junkyard-salvage Volkswagen air-cooled engine pass smog without any smog equipment.

Make of it what you will, especially considering the poster below accusing Hummers of barely passing federal emissions requirements.

(...and the fact that the Volkswagen Bus is a far more cargo and passenger space-efficient vehicle than any commodity-built Detroit SUV ever built, but that's a debate for another day.)

Also, the Popular Mechanics article makes Area 51 out to be totally dead (7 years ago, at least). I force myself to take this with a grain of salt, since Popular Mechanics wants to sell magazines. All my web searches have turned up little about A51 that isn't sensationalistic, so does anybody know any concrete info about recent activity at Area 51?

  25. Malcolm Bricklin on Worst Cars Of All Time Rated · · Score: 1

After he started Subaru USA (and before he imported the Yugo), Malcolm Bricklin took a stab at building his own car, the Bricklin. The similarities with the DeLorean are somewhat obvious, but run deeper than you might think. The car was only produced for three years (1974-1976, DeLorean was produced from 1981-1983), and Bricklin convinced the New Brunswick government to provide financial backing (much as DeLorean got aid from the British government). Overall, it seems like a kit car, but owners say it holds together fairly well. Probably a tad bit more reliable than the Yugo that would come after, and also better performing (there's a Yugo near my house with a "Pocket Rocket decal on the side. Still haven't figured that one out). At least one of Bricklin's automotive attempts survives today.

BTW, I'm surprised that neither the DeLorean nor the Bricklin was mentioned in the article. Both seem to catch shit hand-in-hand whenever they're mentioned in an auto-industry rag.
