True, but the ones who actually talk to the rocks tend to wear nice white coats that wrap the arms all the way around.
I don't know how much more advanced an alien race might be, but I have a hard time believing that the difference between them and us could be any greater than the difference between a human and a rock.

From our perspective, you're probably right. Problem is that the aliens have to be able to look at it from our perspective, which probably isn't going to happen. No matter how intelligent the rock might feel it is, we still know it's just a rock. Not saying that the aliens are incapable of looking at it from our point of view, but that if we're as relatively dumb as they think we are, there's no benefit for them to do so.

Besides, to make any kind of comparison, the aliens have to be working from the same definition of 'intelligence' that we do. They probably aren't, thus no contact (yet).

  5. Re:So, they want to get rid of iTunes? on EU Countries Call Out iTunes DRM · · Score: 1

It's getting really old hearing people bitch about how eMusic has no good music, like they're the ones responsible for that. At the same time, however, consumers have no direct recourse to the people who are responsible for the lack of selection on eMusic (the major labels). So, we pass our complaints on to those who can ameliorate the situation. I've sent a couple nasty messages to Apple for some seemingly arbitrary decisions they've put in place from the iTMS (for example, US buyers can download the audio for Junior Senior's "Move Your Feet", but not the video, as it's "not available in your region"-- WTF? it's on the freaking US CD), same as I've done to eMusic (they carry some artists basically at random, holding maybe one useless live record and ignoring seven other albums); if I had any inclination to use any other service, they'd get an earful from me. The feedback is important because it tells the providers what artists/labels the provider should be working to find a compromise with.

You can't have lots of Top-40/Major Label artists and no DRM at the same time. Pick one or the other. Because it's going to be awhile, if ever, before you can have both. Exactly. For my own part, I subscribed to eMusic for about ten months (just cancelled the subscription this month) mostly for stuff that I couldn't find on iTunes, plus a few tracks I had some marginal interest in and a handful of covers/tributes of dubious quality. After three consecutive months where I didn't find anything interesting-- and believe me, I was really looking-- I figured it would be money better spent on my crippling MMO addictions.

I'm no big fan of DRM, and certainly I'm an Apple enthusiast, but there comes a point where common sense has to overrule blind idealism. Would I be upset if the iTMS vanished tomorrow? Yeah, but I'd get over it. I might be inconvenienced for a while until I get time to re-rip what I've bought, but it wouldn't prompt me to break out the pitchforks and torches. Apple's DRM scheme works for me; your mileage may vary.

I'll disagree here. How many masochists are going to jump at the chance to be in a "one vs. everyone else" setup? The role of the Elite will attract the attention and interest of those who feel they're the best of the best, and can back it up. Sure, people who have no business playing FPS games online (like, oh, I don't know, me) will try it, get frustrated, and give up; but to be honest, for those people who've ever played Counterstrike and thought "screw my teammates, I can plant the bomb/rescue the hostages all by myself", this will probably be their dream game.

Now, that said, I would also really like to see a couple new-IP side-scrollers. Failing that, either a remake/sequel to Mischief Makers or a remake/expanded version of The Goonies II (though that's really more in the Metroid/Castlevania genre, so, no real shortage there).

Sega was founded by some American G.I.s after the Korean War. Their initial idea was that there was a whole lot of G.I.s over here in the Far East, so let's bring American pinball machines and jukeboxes to little parlors around the military bases so they'll feel more at home, and this stuff will be terrific. That's what they did for a number of years and then after a while, a light bulb went on, and they said "wow, we've got this all wrong. We should be designing and manufacturing this stuff here in Japan and sending it to the U.S. and Europe." The company evolved in that manner and was, I think, initially purchased by Great Western, then purchased by Paramount Pictures, and finally Bally/Midway; before being sold back to Rosen. Something like that was the history.

  14. DS games have this, of a sort on Sony 'Anti-Used Game' Patent Explored · · Score: 1

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connect system identifies gamers via Friend Codes. These codes are generated as a function of the game card's unique serial number and the DS's unique serial number (likely the MAC address). If you try to use the same game card in two different DSes, say moving from a regular DS to a DS Lite, you will wind up with a new Friend Code and be unable to use the old one (as a game card cannot be tied to more than one DS at a time).

It's a similar mechanism with the notable and welcome difference that buying the game doesn't lock you into the game for all of eternity; conversely, people who want to buy the game aren't screwed if they choose to save a few bucks and line EB's pockets.

Still, with all the "nothing should impede used games" FUD that Slashdot spreads, I'm surprised that nobody's bitching Nintendo out for minimizing piracy while still ensuring fair use rights.

The usual disclaimers: I own a DS and not a PSP. I'm OK with DRM that doesn't actively screw me over because nine times out of ten when I buy something without a physical medium, I mean to keep it (and the DRMed things I do buy, I do keep); it's called a compromise, learn it use it love it. I believe game makers have to choose: physical medium or DRM, one or the other, not both. I realize that admitting being a mild Nintendo fanboy doesn't excuse it; but I'm not calling Nintendo out, just the anti-DRM fanboys. Mod me a troll if you want, but I want to know why nobody's raised a fit about the DS weak DRM yet? After all, DRM = always bad, right? Or maybe, just maybe, that whole "compromise" thing might just make sense?

However, if you did purchase the game used with the intent of playing online, you could call Sega and have your disc serial reset. They discontinued the service at some point before PSO v2 came out.
