    Release the code under GPL but if you want to use the JAVA trademarks (i.e. if you want to call your program "JAVA") you have to pass the testsuite.

    The same testsuite would also be usable by people writing other "JAVA" implementations (such as the GNU GCJ compiler and libraries).
    In fact, GCJ could just grab whatever code is usefull from the SUN VM directly and use it :)

    I suspect part of it is not wanting it in a format that can be saved to disk and kept for later (otherwise it would hurt sales when the thing is released on CD or whatever)

    Require that all cable TV operators MUST carry (and also all networks MUTS allow them to carry) the digital versions of the Over-The-Air stations (ABC, CBS, NBC etc) if they exist. This should happen right now.

    Also, introduce a requirement that all networks must be broadcasting digital for 100% of their coverage areas by, say, mid 2005 (I dont know how much coverage there is already so I cant say if this date is reasonable or not.

    And, take away any restrictions on what can be brodacast over the digital channels (other than those that apply to TV generally like the content ratings)

    I think that the retail release will happen ASAP but that VU will file injunctions to prevent Valve releasing this on steam untill this mess is sorted out.

    you dont need hardware changes for this to work, just enforce it in the USB mass storage code (i.e. if its set to "no access", windows would error if you were to insert a USB mas storage device, if its set to "read only" and you tried to write to it, it would give the same error as if you tried to write to any other read only media)
    That would stop most of the problems without needing a new hardware standard.

    This is just typical microsoft crap.
    If there is even the slightest chance to invent something new that linux cant copy (or if they do, it would be too legally risky for distros to carry it), microsoft is going to jump at it.

    Basicly, it stops sun developers being paid to develop SO/OO.O from using (under the cross-licencing aggreement) then contributing this code to OO.O which means (potentially) that anyone could lift the code and use it under the terms of the GPL/LGPL or the SISSL (thus getting a free licence for that MS patent)

    If real was to either open their file formats or provide a way to convert them to other formats or something, that would be good.

    If their real->other formats converter didnt convert any DRM protected files, there shouldnt be a problem plus they get to keep their propriatory formats propriatory.

    Also, if they added a "save" option to their streaming client, it would be much better (plus, they could do it without giving out details of their streaming protocols).

    Although I guess part of the point is that people use Real (and now Windows Media) for streaming precicly because you cant save it to disk and/or convert it to other formats.

    What we need is shuttle REPLACEMENTS.
    We need a simple, cheap (reusable if its cheaper, otherwise not) booster that can launch large masses into space and get them to whatever location is desided (e.g. space station parts, sattelites, parts for ships/bases on the moon/mars or whatever).
    I dont know if anything in the Titan or Atlas rocket families is large enough to handle all this or not but if its not, build something that is.

    Then, build a shuttlecraft designed to cary smaller parts, tools, equipment, docking adapters and such. Oh yeah, make it able to cary astronauts too :)

    About the only thing these 2 new vechicles cant do that the current shuttle can is retrieve stuff from space and that isnt exactly a feature thats used very often :)

    There are people out there who would like a phone with but verizon wont allow one on their network (even if you want to pay full price instead of getting it in a package)

    Verizon is now on the list of "companies who think its better to screw the customer than it is to build up a good business"

    OTOH, how many telcos ARENT on that list... :)

    If you want to see some good use of C++ for scripting, check out Command And Conquer Renegade.

    All game scripts are in C++ inside a dll (scripts.dll).
    Source to this dll was not made available by the game developers (Electronic Arts) so it was Reverse Engineered (by me and others) and since then, its getting better all the time.
    Current versions go beoynd the "official" interface for scripts and make direct engine calls directly to do things not otherwise possible.

    What I want to know is why the tech industry (i.e. all those companies who have to spend $$$ to implement these laws and requests and stuff such as ISPs, hardware companies, consumer electronics nmakers, software companies like RedHat and so on) arent fighting back.

    These new bills are likely to hurt companies are people hang on to old hardware/software/electronics instead of buying new DRM stuff. Plus the cost to implement theis stuff.
    Not to mention ISPs and such who have to spend $$$ acting as "copyright police" for Big Media.

    Why dont they get together and form a TIAA (Technology Industry Association Of America) or something and fight back.

    What is keepnig the tech companies from fighting Big Media?

    The obvious question is, now that you can switch and keep your number, how come people (e.g. those wanting JAVA or bluetooth or whatever) dont just go to verizon and say "if you wont give me a phone with the features I want, I will go to another carrier".

    Its not like verizon have a monopoly on the provision of mobile phone services in america...

    You can completly Open Source a game and still make $$$ off it by having "closed" content (art, levels, sounds etc)

    I guess the biggest problems publishers have with Open Source:
    1.You cant copy-protect something that is Open Source
    2.Publishers who think that Open Source == Open Content
    3.The worry about someone taking their hard work and using it for a different game (or a Total Conversion)

    It is more than possible to have an Open Source game with "closed" content and still make big $$$, its just that the big publishers dont realize this.

    just take the existing windows code and use it to write some kind of "wine" type thing that runs on the new unix core.

    Of course, that doesnt help for hardware drivers and kernel-side code.

    The biggest problem with noving to a new core is all the hardware that would stop working due to a lack of drivers on the new core.

    Another thing is whether the rendering context Quicktime is given in order to render onto can alpha blend with whatever is underneath it or not.

    Also acording to someone on a MS blog, the problem with alpha blending on windows IE is that (because they need to support older windows versions like NT4 and 98 and because they need the same user experience on all platforms) using functions like AlphaBlend and such (which were added in windows 2000 and later) isnt an option so they would probobly need to do hand-blending which takes coding time.

    I dont know safari or its code (Is it open?) but making it not gamma correct PNG files without a PNG chunk should be simple.

    This is yet another reason not to vote for Howard.
    Not that I need any more reasons.
    Not after going into IRAQ without support from the australian people to look for weapons that dont exist and terrorists that were never in IRAQ (despite the claims of links between IRAQ and WMDs/Al Queda)
    Not after increasing the HECS bills that UNI students have to pay.
    Not after caving in to big US multinationals and "harmonizing" Australian IP laws to be more like those found in the United States of Big Corperations.
    Not after supporting the FTA which is totally one-sided (in the americans favor of course).
    Not after being in bed with Bush.

    Besides, Micheal Moore called Howard an idiot on National TV. If that isnt a reason not to vote for the idiot, I dont know what is :)

    Sure, Latham may be supporting some of these things too but he is supporting less of them than howard (and has stated at least once that he would undo some of the changes like the changes to HECS).

    Here in australia, we have mandated requirements for Australian Content but they are nothing like what the candaians have.

    Disney owns ABC america
    News Corp owns Fox News and 20th centuary fox
    Time Warner owns CNN
    Viacom owns Paramount and CBS (and also UPN)
    I dont know who owns NBC (I think it is or was Vivendi or General Electric or something)

    No matter where you go, most "news" outlets are biased.
    When it comes to any issue that affects the big $$$$$ that Big Media makes, they are always going to go with whatever side makes them the most.

    With regards to copyright, expect the MPAA to push for HD-DVD players (or whatever the new standard for blue-laser hi-definition DVDs ends up being) to only play protected content. And for any commercially available recording devices to use different disks. Their stated goal for that would be "preventing piracy" but their real aim would be to prevent anyone from being able to produce content for the format unless its been vetted by the MPAA first.

    Not coincidentally, thats why Big Media is winning in congress over the technology companies (because Big Media can paint the congressmen that support them in a favorable light and paint those that wont in an unfavorable light)
