  1. Lazy Eye :( on Quake II In Full Motion Stereogram 3D Engine · · Score: 1

Unfortunately I can never see these fancy steregograms because I have a lazy left eye. I remember when I was around 10 or so I could see them but that was before I developed lazy eye. Now I find it is pretty much impossible. Has anyone with lazy eye have had success with seeing these images? If so, what's your technique?

Also, portable configuration files in PuTTY would be a real blessing. One of the best parts of PuTTY is you can easily fit it on the tiny portable media of your choice and use it anywhere. Unfortunately it uses the registry to store its settings, sessions, etc and it would be nice if I didn't have to write to the registry of every machine I ever used it on. It would be nice to just carry a config file with all my sessions along with my PuTTY executable.

  6. Does anyone use "Collaboration Graphs" ? on How Do OOP Programmers Flowchart? · · Score: 1

One of the instructors at my University is getting us to use "Collaboration Graph Notation". (Note that this appears to be different from UML Collaboration Diagrams). I'm just wondering if anyone ever uses these in practice because they, and the book that introduces them seem like the biggest bunch of BS ever. The book reads more like something written b y a philosopher rather than a software developer.

So does anyone actually use this? What's the advantage over UML?

  7. Re:Consistency, please on CSS for the LDP? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Why one CSS? Allow user to pick which stylesheet they want to view all documents with (as in CSS Zen Garden). As long as each document has the proper tags, it would be easy to make them all appear consistent under a stylesheet. This would also make it easy for distros to distribute their own custom distro-themed stylesheets for the documentation.

It should be trivial to generate proper classes of tags from the source documents because LDP uses something similar to Docbook (or maybe they actually use Docbook now? They didn't quite last time I checked) so all the context information is already there.

Some languages such as VHDL have even more logic values. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are 1, 0, X for undefined (If you assign two conflicting values to one signal, the state is undefined), U for unknown, there is also strong and weak, which are close to 1 and 0 respectively but not quite there... and there's a bunch of other ones I have never really used.

I'm sorry, but obviously you don't know the first thing about MIDI. MIDI has absolutely 0 to do with actually generating any sounds. It's essentially a proctocol (Music Instrument Digital INTERFACE) for sending instructions to devices to various devices. The sounds generated are wholly dependant on the device being controlled, and in fact many MIDI controlled devices have nothing to do with even generating sounds (you can control mixers, etc with MIDI). If "everything sounds 8 bit like a nintendo game" it just means the synthesizer you are using is of low quality. You can load a sampler with a 3GB set of piano samples and it would be nearly impossible for your average listener to distinguish the result from a recorded $100k piano.

The corporate world doesn't seem to have much of a problem with the logo as far as I can tell. HP and IBM were eagerly plastering it over all of their products at the last show I went to. Also, not all Linux companies companies insist on using the Linux pengiun in their logos, take RedHat or Progeny for example.

Btw, is it just me, or does the RedHat guy look like a pretty shady character? I don't think I'd be too inclined to let someone like that manage my servers :p

  14. Re:Don't you mean... on Linux the Tortoise to Microsoft's Hare? · · Score: 5, Interesting

On the contrary, I think the pengiun is an easily recognizable and very memorable symbol for Linux. It's much easier to remember a cute character like that than some abstract symbol. Judging by the few trade shows I've attended the corporate types just love picking up the stuffed or rubber pengiun toys exhibitors give out. Personally I think they beat out Microsoft's stupid "spider balls" that I got. Not to mention the XP T-shirts that say "Yes you can." (Thanks for the permission by the way ;)

I don't think this problem is just limited to Fido. I am on Telus, and I have the same problems in some buildings, which I think is just a function of their construction. By far the worst is my school, SFU, which is all concrete with lots of mesh metal girders (if you know it, take a look at the convo mall roof some time) that totally kill my cell reception. I'd say 99% of the time I have absolutely no cell reception. Pretty much I just have to rely on voice mail at school, and then check it out doors, then use a local phone to make a call so that my connection doesn't drop right in the middle of talking.

Strangely, Fido seems to have nearly perfect reception up there, and I would switch were it not for being locked in to a contract with Telus :(
