Unfortunately, we're beyond looking stupid to the whales and dolphins. Now, we look stupid to the gorillas and chimps, we're starting to look stupid to other mammals, and when we look stupid to the lower reptiles, it's pretty much game over.
Heh! I used to listen to Coast-to-Coast when I had insomnia. I quit because everytime I turned on the radio, they were having commercials. I'm not even sure they still have Coast-to-Coast. AFAICT, they have commercials the entire 4 hours!
I listen to the radio to and from work. I know their commercial schedule and when an ad comes on, I turn the damn thing off. I turn it back on about the time the ads are over.
OK, I am a geezer to, but radio is perfect for news. That's what I use it for. I don't watch TV news - haven't for years. But on my drive to work I turn on the radio news, traffic, weather AM station. Why is it not good for news? What streaming thing should I be getting local news from? I get it for podcasts, music, etc. But News?
For me, the importance of radio is current affairs and news. But then, I might be an old fogey at this point, as my car's radio is pretty much stuck on CBC Radio One (I'm Canadian), or one of the local NPR affiliates when I'm south of the border.
Same here (and I AM an old fogey). I don't bother with music radio, but I listen to several local news & talk stations.
I had Google Fiber at my previous house. I thought it was very good. My current house didn't have it, so I switched to Time-Warner. The internet was slower than Goog, but not bad. TV seemed as good. Their DVR reminded me of Windows. Crap compared to either Google's or the Tivo, but GoodEnough (tm). My only real problem with Spectrum-Warner is the obscene price.
More to the point, if the money system collapses so will the system of property rights. If the dollar becomes worthless all you will have to protect any asset is a gun.
I've said that if we have a collapse, I'd rather have lead than gold. And bitcoins, being virtual, would be even worse for bullets than gold.

Those are not out of place in the neo-BSG universe. They exist there for a reason.
They aren't nearly as silly as some of the stuff in Trek that suffers from 50 years of accumulated cruft and contradictions.
My biggest WTF in Trek was more cultural than tech. They had no problem with Japanese, black, and even Russian officers. But women couldn't command starships? Yes, I know it was the 60s, but it was supposed to the 23rd century!
That word - I do not think it means what you think it means.
Yes there were other systems besides MS-DOS in the 80s. Yes they used other file name structures. MS-DOS was still alive and well, and that's what most computer users knew. Windows 3 came out in 1992, and it was the first version of Windows to get any sort of traction in the market. Even it still used 8.3. Windows 95 was the first to use "long" filenames.
Yes, MS-DOS was the best known OS, and most people used its 8.3 filesystem until 95, and even then it took time for people to get used to long filenames.
That depends. Last year, and probably this year, I watch a number of CW shows. Hulu doesn't carry those shows. OTOH, there's a lot of stuff Netflix & Hulu DO carry. I'd miss specific shows, but I'd still have plenty of crap to watch.
That's exactly what I do with my iPhone. I poke around online, and if I see a bunch of, "Nooo! My ph0ne is borked!!!one!" posts, then I wait to upgrade.
I've never had a smart TV. I'm happy with my simple Roku. It gets my Netflix and Hulu stuff, I can get other stuff if I want, I've never heard of an update bricking one, and if it did, I'd be out a whole lot less than $1800.
For some oddball reason, my Spectrum-Warner remote, which did everything else, didn't want to switch to HDMI 2. And, since I got my Roku soon after a move, I had a hellova time finding the original TV remote, which did work.
The Roku itself seemed straightforward, but maybe a Joe Sixpack or Aunt Tilly would disagree.
Except they're not always listening. Echo listens internally for the Alexa/Echo/Amazon keyword, only then does it start recording and transmitting to the cloud. They can be hacked sure, but that's been possible on any computer with a microphone for a couple of decades.
That's what They (tm) want you to think. *adjusts tinfoil hat*
IME, "Breaking News!!!one!!" is usually wrong anyway. I hear all sorts of stuff spouted "Is it terror? Was there one shooter or 5? Was it Trump/Obama/Bush's fault?" but few real facts.
I'm better off turning off the tube for the day and flipping back the next day when things have settled.
As far as rain goes, it probably doesn't go out during an "average" rain, but I live where there's a lot of much heavier than "average" rains, and even if it didn't go completely out, it still messed up the reception. My mom has similar complaints about Dish. I have no such problems with Spectrum-Warner. Haven't had much experience with customer support on either.

Absolutely this! Geezer, and proud of it.

It was still outdated in the 80s. :p
Hitler gassed 6 million people. Counting the Taco Bell incident, Trump's only gassed a couple dozen at most.

If you're watching Tivo, you're watching TV. If anything, I watched more TV because I wasn't limited to whatever aired on PrimeTime.
Interesting. I never have given it my number, but could still login last time I tried. It does nag for it though.

My TV's dumb, but it's a 32", and at least 3 years old. I wonder if even the small sets will be "smart" when I'm ready for my next one.

I'm not sure "most people" know what streaming is, other than what is done in the bathroom.
Mostly in hopes that NK has launched nukes and I can just not bother to go in to work today.
You're lucky. My boss doesn't accept such excuses.
Mainly because we've already force-upgraded everyone who didn't nuke their machine.

No no.. you missed the metaphor...
Humans are not buggy whip makers. They are horses.
